Now that I can agree with!

Just for the record... I wasn't saying he was bias in an "underlying motivations" way. More that he did select more waratahs than any other province and I could understand the logic, as flawes as I think it was, behind it. It has just lead to the current situation where they have the most players with test experience so they get selected.

"Deans has always had a tendancy to select Waratahs. You only have to look at the past squad selections to see that he has. Whether there is politics behind it, I don't know. But I can see why he may think that the individual performances of each players have warranted selection in the past. They always seemed to perform so well but were snubbed at the end of the game for whatever reason. So I do see the logic behind what he has done."

I think you're putting this stuff into isolation too much. Palmer is injured, so who is the prop left out because Kepu was selected? If Deans wanted a lock/6 to train with the squad, then it makes sense to pick Dennis -- who was the alternative? Timani over Douglas does not support your Waratah favouritism argument. As for your postulation about Hooper, you might well be right but again I don't think that has anything to do with him being a Waratah and everything to do with the style in which he plays. Hooper wasn't even a Waratah until this season and last year he was the best player for the Wallabies so I'm not sure how his selection over Gill would constitute Tah bias.

Folau over Mogg is probably the closest to 50-50, but I'm not sure how that is Waratah favouritism. If anything, it's "the-ARU-just-spent-$450k-on-a-bloke-itism" and the broader interest of the code in retaining Folau into the future.

That in itself is a sign of bias.

How many code hoppers can you name that have gone to the Tahs and received large ARU top ups straight away?

How many for all the other teams?

Alexander has been pretty shoddy at THP though. Great around the park, but weak in the scrum. I'm not sure Kepu is on the right side of a 50-50, who's the other side? Holmes, Sio, or someone else? Palmer is injured, if he's fit he'll be one of the final six.

Agree there. It shows Deans doesn't know what he is doing!

Dunno if you've run yer eye over my posts, Scotty, but in my opinion (only watched rugby for 48 years, that's all) Smith and Gill are better scavengers than Hooper while Hooper's better with ball in hand. Not that Hooper's crap attacking the ball or Gill can't run with it, I reckon one's a bit better when his team's defending while the other's a bit better on attack. Hooper's try on Saturday night when Smith tried to get to him sorta summed up my judgement.

If I was selecting this squad I'd pick one of Smith or Gill and start with that player. For mine, Hooper's perfectly skilled to come on some time in the second half. There was no way Hooper was in a 50-50 contest with Gill, Michael was a definite (he is the incumbent 7 after all); Gill was a 50-50 against Smith. Now, who would you pick, Smith or Gill?

Yes, have seen your posts on this.

I would have had all three in the squad as Smith can also play 6/8 later in the game.

Agree that Hooper is the better runner of the ball, but Gill has a better pass, pilfer and pick and drive. Not sure how it will pan out against the Lions, but I suspect that Hooper won't really find the space to show off his wares, whereas we always need the on baller and close pick and drive player in tight games.

As awesome as Hoopers running game is, he is a 7, not a back. Btw all this 'hooper missed tackles' stuff is a load. He has something like the second most tackles in the comp.

In saying that, Gill is a more traditional 7 but has the advantages of a better passing and close in ruck game. Surely this is more suited to the first 60 minutes of the game? Hooper would be perfect to bring on (with dem crazy eyes) and tear the lions to bits as their big blokes get tired.

This thread is off topic...

One of the things Deans values in his players more than just about anything is leadership. Pat McCabe was elevated to the leadership group under Deans because he is a straightforward, die- for-the-cause kind of bloke. Despite his relatively limited experience at the top level, too.

Under Cheika, the selection of Dennis as skipper was probably a surprise given the presence of a guy like Benn Robinson, but it is an inspired decision in hindsight. Cheika spent time in preseason getting inside the heads of his players, and picked the unassuming bloke from western Sydney who is all about hard work and seeing those around him succeed. I can even forgive him for pulling on that disgusting blue and gold hooped jersey at this point.

In the last few weeks Dennis has shown the kind of leadership Deans wants on the field as well, and probably saw in previous tours and campaigns for the Wallabies. Looking at the way the Tahs stuck to their guns against the Stormers, and the crucial decisions Dennis made in those last ten minutes, including his own physical presence at key moments, it is hard to leave the bloke out.

He's also the lineout caller for the Tahs, which everyone seems to think gives Simmons an automatic call up despite his many shortcomings.

So I think, yet again, we can call this contentious until the cows wander in for a feed and a bit of tit work, but Deans has his reasons, and none of them involve personally disagreeing with a bunch of idiots on a rugby forum.

Wendell Sailor at the Reds. Andrew Walker at the Brumbies. Willie Carne at the Reds. Peter Ryan at the Brumbies. A-handful-I-can't-be-bothered-looking-up at the Rebels.

How many players have Queensland pinched from other provinces over the years? How 'bout you get off your high Red horse, Scotty? I honestly couldn't give a fuck which team Wallaby players emanate from, as long as they're the best fit for the Australian team in their position. I didn't complain one bit when watching a team with 14 from Queensland and one from New South Wales wearing green and gold. Did you?

Strong post Pfitzy. Deans has picked his squad with winning the Lions in mind. We might not agree with all of the picks, but there is logic to each and every one of them.

Like it Pfitzy. Dave Dennis isn't the flashiest of blokes but he's as honest a hard working player who gets the most out of himself as you'd want to see. I'm still not sure he'd be in my Wallaby starting line up but he's got terrific ticker and yes his leadership at the Tahs has been excellent. A bench player at the very least. I feel the same way about Pat McCabe. I respect that bloke so much for his courage and outright desire to be the best player he can be. You've got to have blokes like that in your squad.

Tarred for life as I am in support of my beloved Tahs, but I woudn't've picked Dennis. Yes, I agree with those who've worked out his usefulness on the bench to cover 4 and 6, but I think MMM's the better choice. AND I would've waited until it was clearer if Hugh was ready for action. This new-fangled eight subs lot complicates things, a start of two props, hooker, lock and backrow for the forwards sounds about right, does the backrower have to be a 6? Surely we have to pick a spare flyer and Higgers can go to 8 if required. Or even Timani.

There again, who'd be a selector.

You sure that Carne, Ryan and Walker were given ARU top ups when the came to rugby?

I think you might using the term 'high horse' incorrectly.

Don't you agree that the Tahs have been the biggest beneficiaries of ARU largess since our last RWC win?

8 subs doesn't complicate at all. It is just 7 plus a prop!

Would only change things if you have a prop that can play another position outside front row. Not many of them around.

Speaking of bias, can someone explain to me how in the hell S. Finger keeps getting Wallaby caps? It has to be some sort of bias because he certainly isn't test quality.....
