So why don't we have Cheerleaders at the Waratah's games?

Yes, cheerleaders have had such a detrimental effect on crowds in South Africa, France and NZ.... Meanwhile, the crowds are flocking to the SFS to see Tah Man strut his stuff...

It's not an either or thing -you have both to appeal to different sections of your audience.

It's having that audience to play for that counts which is why teams should be doing everything they can to make the off-field side enjoyable, in case the on-field aspect disappoints.

The Brisbane Broncos have 2 mascot Broncos, a real horse, sponsor mascots and a set of cheerleaders and have outdrawn the Reds in crowd numbers in every year since their inception in 1988.

Sports administrators are really selling a show. If they want people to watch that show, they need to make it entertaining.

The Broncos outsell the Reds because Brisbane is a rugby league city. It has nothing to do with the amount of cheerleaders they have have around Lang Park on game day.

Why is Brisbane a Rugby League city? It has plenty to do with selling an entertaining product and creating a lively atmosphere. How would you do that if you were a Rugby Administrator?

Brisbane is a Rugby League city because every school bar about 20 play rugby league. It is the biggest sport in town and the top team is part owned by the only paper in town.

But I also agree with what you are saying about entertaining the crowd. I think that the QRU have done quite a good job this year in getting people to the game and this is backed up by selling over 15,000 memberships for the season. I think the Charlie Fetoa dance troop do quite a good job at entertaining the kids while the teams warm up.

If you did a quick survey of Sharks/Bulls fans asking if they'd be happier if the cheer girls were scrapped, what percentage of fans do you honestly think would vote for that? I'd say a max of 1 in 10.

You'd face a riot, with the corporates right at the front. They'd probably fund the riot.

The Bulls girls have been going for as long as I can remember. These days they are properly choreographed dancers. Not that most care about that but what I am saying is they are not just pretty girls in bikinis, but pretty girls doing dancey shit properly.

Whenever the Bulls or Sharks do promotional events, book signings, charity etc the girls play a very active role so they are part of the brand equity, like in American sports. I remmeber the girls doing ticket promotion on campus and that's a loooooong time ago for me.

But I can see that there is possibly a stiff upper lip culture at the SFS. After all, any self respecting, Shiraz sipping gentleman goes to a rugby stadium to watch rugby and then only after that to Tittysgalore at the Cross.

They should get the Reds cheerleaders from a few years ago. They left very little to the imagination.

I imagined plenty!

Seriously though I went to a Titans game the other week and the cheerleaders there were fantastic. They had them all the way up from about 9 or 10 through to grown ups and they did gymnastic routines just like that icon of a movie "Bring it"

They were quite distracting. I had seats right behind them a few years ago when the Reds weren't going great and was transfixed on them for about 5 mins during the game. My imagination did quite a bit that night.

and THATS why we dont have cheerleaders at the SFS.

Its a little thing called class, honor, pride and dignity

I think the biggest issue with tah crowds is ticket prices. They kept jacking the prices up in the mid noughties when most games were sold out and now good seats are about 2 times the equivalent for an NRL match. Sure we can bag NRL all we want but that adds up to a huge cost difference over 5-6 games, particularly if people want to bring families. At the same time the quality of games has fallen with the introduction of the cheetahs, force and rebels (plus defections to europe from Aus, SA and NZ).

A personal beef, why the hell do they have the announcements up so loud? You can't even talk to the person next to you while they are on (which is probably for more than half the game).

I think it has more to do with the value for what you get, rather than the cost itself. I don't think people mind spending good money when there is good footy to watch. There should be a "pre game"like a 1st Colts game, but apparently that can't happen (this topic was brought up last year when the crowds were bigger than they are now). Also the members area had many more people attending.
