So why don't we have Cheerleaders at the Waratah's games?

After another dour night watching the Waratahs on Saturday night why don't we have Cheerleaders at the Waratah's games? Please don't mention that "tool" Tah man in any context to do with entertainment. No wonder there is no one at the games anymore.

Hey - hands off Tah Man. He rocks.

I don't think cheerleaders are the answer to pulling in the crowds to the SFS. Many spectators are more interested in what happens after kick-off.

They should get the Reds cheerleaders from a few years ago. They left very little to the imagination.

So you really think the crowds will come flocking purely because we have dressed some hot chicks up in skimpy outfits? That might work for the League but it isn't what rugby crowds want to see by and large.

I think the 15 men on the field are far more responsible for the 'dour nights at the rugby' than the one guy dressed in the superhero getup.

What do you mean he rocks? How can you say that? Oh ok I get it your Tah man or his agent. haha

The cheerleaders wont be the answer to failing crowds but it would definitely give us something to look at while we wait for some interesting rugby to happen.

It's not about thinking that chicks will bring crowds in, its about something interesting to watch while we sit there waiting for the footy to happen.

I was about to say, I strongly agree with this sentiment...

Yeah. Good, constructive response there, Stands. No, I'm no relation to Tah man, whoever he may be...I assume they had to exile the previous Tah Man after he was unmasked on Fox Sports a while ago.

Have you ever been to the rugby with kids? I took my son to a trial game against the Brumbies when he was only about 2-3 years old, and far and away the best part of the game for him was Brumby Jack. I'm glad the Tahs came up with their own version. He's just good fun - perhaps he just doesn't appeal to your grown-up, sophisticated tastes in entertainment...by which I mean, he doesn't have tits.

If they want to improve the atmosphere, lower the beer prices and provide more bars.

Then do what other sports do and set up an effects mic near a loud group and run it through the loud speakers a bit muffled

It can be a troubled road to go down. There was a big uproar in Brisabne about the cheerleaders being a bit too risque and that is why they stopped them. It is a shame in my eyes as now the only way for some young girls to put themselves through uni is to work at strip clubs when they used to be able to be cheerleaders for the Reds.

On the assumption that a fair proportion of the crowd has come to watch rugby, I favour more rugby as the warm-up for the main show. I know the argument against having curtain-raisers has been the need to clear the arena for 60-90 min before kick-off, but surely at the SFS teams can do most of their warm-up on the adjacent facilities and have a curtain-raiser until 20min or so before the game. Especially since the Super season now goes deep into the club/schoolboy season.

The Reds had a schoolboy trial between TSS, Nudgee and Churchie before the Bulls game and it finished about 30-40 mins before the kick off to the main game. it was good to watch. I am really not one for cheerleaders myself. I think they have a place in the States and at Sharks home games.

A few years ago the Reds used to have a inter club skills challenge at half time that was a bit of fun. It can keep the crowd entertained.

In all seriousness though, I agree that it's a very tricky issue. I think it does come down to an audience and branding issue. I wouldn't be adverse to having cheerleaders there, but it wouldn't affect my personal inclination or disinclination to go to a game.

However, union's audience has always been as a middle to upper class sport. I can tell you for a fact that there are large numbers of corporate supporters in Melbourne who would actually be less likely to attend if cheerleaders were present. A little known fact is that the only seating allocation at Rebels games that sold out was the Weary Dunlop club, ie the $2000 a year membership. It sold out so quickly, they decided to double the initial allocation and it still sold straight through.

The Tahs fans need to get more vocal and proactive. Do you go to the SFS to watch an event or do you go to be part of an event? The is the question that needs to be asked. Get behind your boys even before the game starts and let your noise and passion inspire them.

I would prefer that they just sacked Hickey and started playing some decent footy. I like the fact there is an abundance of female talent in the crowds at rugby matches (especcially in the members at the SFS) and a distinct lack of blokes with no teeth pouring beer down my back.

That would change dramatically with Cheerleaders

At least cheerleaders will mean the crowds at SFS get some form of entertainment.

it was interesting on saturday sitting in front of a group of 8-10 year old boys at the rugby with their dads. It was a good insight into what they know about the game, who their favourite players are, and what they liked about it. I was quite proud that they knew most of the players from sight, and were ost excited about the big hits and defensive work of the teams. And Tah man got a good cheer and some genuine excitement from them. So keep tah man - Sydney needs at least on e bloke willing to look like a dickhead for the crowd's entertainment.

Given the number of stoppages there are in a game of rugby, it's a bit ridiculous that there are no cheerleaders there to add to the spectacle. Cheerleaders are not there to be the main event or detract from the game but they are there to provide light entertainment during scrum resets, after tries have been scored, when a drop goal goes over. They're on for 30 seconds and then sit back down.

If you worried about turning away the corporates, dont dress them in the skankiest outfits you can find. They work to improve the rugby-going experience in South Africa, New Zealand, France and hopefully Argentina next season.

If you did a quick survey of Sharks/Bulls fans asking if they'd be happier if the cheer girls were scrapped, what percentage of fans do you honestly think would vote for that? I'd say a max of 1 in 10.

There is a place for the appropriate use of cheerleaders in Australian rugby - finding the money to get the groups organized is probably a lesser priority though for a CEO, because they won't of themselves get people to turn up. But they should make it a more enjoyable experience for the fans.
