I know that, but its no excuse. If you are going to make crude offensive statements you have to be prepared to accept them back. What a petulant bully. Hwe should have received at least a months ban for it. Like I say, all respect gone for him as a person.
Seemed a pretty good excuse to me. You may like to dictate how people behave at all times, but sometimes shit happens and someone cracks it. It's not pretty or dignified, but it's there and in this case can be explained pretty easily.

I like fast bowlers with a bit of mongrel about them. Aggressive, irrational and unpredictable are all good qualities when it comes to unsettling batsmen. If they're not getting fined, they're not trying hard enough. Andre Nel was one of the greats in this regard.

Great, so you threaten to kill someone and its OK because your wife is sick. If you watch the whole incident here
you can see that McGrath started it and went on and on with it for 3 overs worth of sledging. Only a bully will react the way he did. Disgraceful.

A month ban, coupled with a massive fine and a public apology was required. What a fuckwit.

Damo, you're kidding. A month ban..............I seem to remember that McGrath was fined quite heavily for the incident. Something like 60% of his match fee. He also apologised to the opposing player both publicly and privately at the conclusion of the day's play and also apologised to his captain and the Australian Cricket Board.

a month's ban, come on. They dont even ban players when they admit to match fixing............or should that read 'irregular behaviour with bookmakers'?

Well I am pleased to hear that he was fined and that he apologised. Given that, perhaps a ban was not necessary.

However, I am adamant that there is a line to be drawn between humorous and slightly crude language designed to put off a batsman and violently aggressive threats, particularly threats to kill someone. I am also adamant that if you go around saying nasty and crude things to people you can't react like that when the person fires back with a cliched comeback.

The video I posted puts the incident in context but it does not show very well the incident itself. There was another video on YouTube that is unfortunately not there anymore which shows the incident from another angle, and one which paints McGrath in a very bad light indeed. Based on this, I think he's a tosser, and I am sticking to that, your mileage may vary, but perhaps you would have a different view if the player wasn't Australian.

Sledging's for wankers. Better to let ones actions speak louder than his words. All this thread has done is prove cricket is a game for sooks.

makes no difference to me, I'm not Australian. I do agree that there is a line drawn, McGrath stepped over that line in this instance. But it shouldn't detract from the record the man has, 4th highest wicket taker in history, and for all the good stuff he has done post career. The Australians are credited with starting sledging, mainly from Allan Border's team, but it was well and truly alive before that. The great Fred Trueman was the probably the first to do it. But hey, even WG Grace was accused of making disparaging remarks, so who really knows.

On Dam0's standards, Mother Theresa would be remembered as a stern old bat with bad dress sense.

Didn't he just ask him what lara's cock tasted like? Must be a potent trouser snake if thats'a threaten to kill...

Sarwan definitely won the sledging contest anyway. Poor form on his part if he knew McGrath's wife was ill, but I certainly don't feel sorry for McGrath - gonna give it, gotta take it.

you should read some of what Christopher Hitchens had to say about her!

You read my mind. I thought about posting something to that effect, but thought better of it. Suffice to say, I am not one of that nun's fans, and as a former Catholic am appalled by even the idea that she could be canonised.

Actually, as much as I dislike McGrath here and on other occasions, his crimes are miniscule by comparison

Years ago Benny Elias was playing a midweek game against one of the Walters twins,Walters had just been selected to play for Australia the following weekend.
A scrum was called and Elias was a little tardy in getting set for the scrum.
Apparently Walters called out and said "Hurry up Benny I have a Test match to play on the weekend"

Ok this is the one I posted another Brain Macmillan told by Mark Taylor

Brain Macmillan - Shane Warne
"Bic Mac couldn't pick Warnie at all, he didn't have a clue. Before the tour we had decided not to sledge Brian because he was bigger than all of us and we didn't want to provoke him, but Warnie couldn't resist it: 'Hey, Big Mac, I'll call them out to you - maybe that'll help'."

"So for the next three or four overs Warnie called every ball: 'leg spinner' - and Big Mac would play and miss. Next ball: 'wrong'un' - and it would hit Big Mac on the pad. Next ball: 'flipper'... and so it went on. It didn't help Brian much, though. He couldn't score a run. Couldn't lay a bat on it.

"Eventually Brian had had enough and he walked down the pitch to Warnie at the end of the over. 'Hey, Shane...you're coming to South Africa next month. Hundreds of people go missing or die in our country every day...another one won't make any difference.'

"Well, Warnie turned white. He couldn't bowl - suddenly it was full tosses and half trackers. I ran up from first slip at the end of the over and asked him if he was OK. 'Do you think he meant it?' was all he could say."

The story is told by former Australian captain Mark Taylor, speaking at the Primary Club breakfast on the morning of the Sydney Test. His topic is 'sledging' on the 1993-94 series and how effective it could be.

Taylor has loved the forthright views and opinions expressed by players before and during the current series and emphasises that, as long as it isn't personal, there will always be a place for 'chat.'

He recounted the tale of McMillan telling Alan Border that he was "going to shoot" him at the close of play. Sure enough he entered the Australian dressing room with an SAP regulation issue handgun and demanded to see Border.

"AB was 38-years-old at the time," said Taylor, "and were all prepared to sacrifice him. 'Down there' we all shouted, pointing to where AB was sitting. Big Mac walked slowly up to him, put the gun down on the bench and slowly reached into each pocket pulling out a couple of cans of Castle.

'Fancy a beer?'"
