Does anyone know how the points are allocated towards players for the Shute Shield.. and does anyone S15 miss out on first grade due to this points system being in place.

Seems plenty of S15 players seem to miss out on Shute shield due to rep duties, injuries and enforced rest due to RUPA Agreement. This may be more of a factor than staying below the points cap.
Be a different story now that the final series is upon us, however plenty of injured/recovering players and internationals may not be released to play by their paymasters at ARU and S15 level due to risks.
In many respects the clubs will feed off the scraps that the S15 franchises throw their way, even though the players would be itching to play.

The points system is based on what category of player you were at the start of the current calendar year ie if you played S14 in 2010 for the first time, you are not yet considered a S14 player. First Grade Teams are allowed 140 points.
Points work as follows:
Wallaby - 20 points
S14 - 16 points
>40 1st Grade games or Aust Schools or U20 Rep in last 2 years - 10 points
>25 1st Grade games - 6 points
>50% 1st Colts in 2009 or Div 1 State Schools Rep in last 2 years - 4 points
The rest - 2 points
Discounts
1 point for each year of service to club (max 5)
100% discount for >7yrs service to same club

Does the discount for service (100% after 7 yrs) explain why there is such a rush to sign up future schoolboy talent into Colts at the earliest opportunity. 2 or 3 years in colts would make a difference to the points if colts years count for discounting.
Does service in the Juniors (U6-U18 ) prior to Colts count as part of the loyalty discount?

I think clubs sign good Colts beacuse they become their Grade stars of tomorrow. However there is a cap of 50 points at Colts 1 which prevents teams from acquiring lots of school rep players.
U11-U17 Juniors do count.

There is a 5 point discount but only in your first year with the club.

The points system applies to all matches inclusing finals. There is a cap in First and Second Grade and First and Seconds Colts. The system is designed to help with the distribution of talent around the clubs (although more from preventing a team from becoming too strong than supporting a weaker team).

It's interesting that when Uni played Eastwood a couple of weeks ago with all their rock stars in except Dean Mumm and Phil Waugh they had 123 player points out of an allowed 140. I suspect Dean Mumm wouldn't attract many points because of the length of time he had been at the club, likewise Phil Waugh. Players like Tom Carter and Tim Davidson don't cost any points presumably for this reason. The most "expensive" players are Berrick Barnes (20pts),Luke Burgess (17pts), and Julian Huxley (17pts). Interestingly Alfi Mafi who has been at Uni since Colts in 2007 and has only played a handful of S14 games is worth 11 points where a guy like Dave Dennis who has played rep footy at a much higher level is only worth 5 points and Pat McCutcheon who has captained Aus Schools and Aus 7s among other things is only worth 6. It's a weird system.

I guess the morale of the story is to get 'em while they are young and keep 'em in your stable.
Uni seem to have worked this system well, good on 'em.
Pirates seem to be establishing the framework for future success with their recent recruiting.
Randwick and Easts seem to be striving to replicate this model with perhaps not as much success as Uni and Pirates.
Other clubs do not seem to have been as successful in establishing the framework to manage a stable of discounted rockstars whilst staying under the points cap.

The difference between Alfi Mafi and Dave Dennis is as at 1 Jan this year, Dennis had not played S14 or Test rugby, so he was still considered a First Grade level player ie Mafi 16 - 5 = 1 and Dennis 10-5 = 5. In fact, many of Uni's players (eg Jerry, Tilese, Charles, Dennis, Cutch, McCal, Inman) have become S14 players this season and their points will go up significantly for next year.
Dean Mumm would be a 15 - Test Player minus 5 year discount. Carter, Davidson and Waugh are 0 for long service.
Schools representation is only relevant for your first 2 years out of school.

Dennis made his S14 debut in 2007 v Crusaders and did play mid week games for the Wobs on last year's spring tour.

The rule is actually 3 S14 games. Dennis has not played a Test.

Cheers, thanks for the info. They are going to have some problems next year with guys like Tilse, Cutch, Jerry Y, Inman, Charles, Dennis and McCalman all racking up the points. Wonder how they will handle it?

I remember that game that Dennis played in 2007. He came on as a replacement and Sievert also got a bit of a run in the same game IIRR.
He didn't appear again until 2009 - on the the bench in one game, but was not used. Since he was only in the dirt-trackers on the Wallabies 2009 EOYT you can see why he had zero points as at 1/1/10.
I wonder if people think the points system is

I think the more interesting question is what will they do until the end of June next year. If they had to wait another month for their players this year, would they have made the semis?
