Shute Shield 2026

They need it all stabilised. I know it doesn't directly effect on field play but all the unknowns around future homes and when they'll move etc doesn't help.

Not an attractive recruitment or retention place when simple things are up in the air. It then snowballs. Players will start leaving just on rumours going around now.

Yes but in the last 12 months we have had DOR, Head Coach, General Manager, Head of Colts & Operations Manager leave.

What is happening at TG?

I noticed on the eastwoods facebook page when they did the pasifica announcement thing that there were comments from the coaches who played a major part in getting that up and going and those comments have now been deleted by eastwood admin. comments on the line of 'stop trying to save your club by now promoted pasifica whilst in the background and behind closed doors your saying you have too many of them and to get rid of them'

Marlins

Marlins reported a significant increase in income and profit at their AGM last night, together with a highly credentialled new coaching line up to support Sam Lane, starting with Nathan Grey as DoR, and Harry Fehily as defence coach. Together with Harry Jones as colts coach, there is a strong energy around the club's preparations for 2026.

With the Rats winning the title there's nothing more I'd like to see than the Marlins rise and that rivalry hit fever pitch on the Northern Beaches.

Interesting that's where Grey has landed. Is he in any other roles around the place?

Is it true the players from last season are still owed money + others as well and the General Manager Bec Watson won't respond to queries. Makes it very hard to toe the line with the movement rules if clubs are behaving like this.

Do all shute shield clubs make a profit each year?
What numbers are we talking about realistically from income in, spend and profits?

its never that much as they generally budget to spend what they expect to recieve -with a small profit of say $50k.
Some clubs have a P&L of around a mil. some less, a couple more.

Randwick 2024: Profit 30k
Gordon 2024: Loss 14k
Norths 2024: Loss 85k
Easts: Profit 125K
Manly : Profit 30k
Warringah: Profit 32k
West Harbour: Profit 61k (2023)

It is really dependant on sponsors then payments to Players and Coaches. Variability in crowds and what not is fairly similar year on year. Couple big benefactors are happy to eat that bit of cost.

Easts showing what having a Club on site can do...

Grants - $100k
Rego - $118k
Sponsorship - $686k

Bar sales - $2.4m

On the other side
Coaching and development payment - $305k
Player's reimbursable payments- $213k
Players insurance and rego fees payment - $26k

From an outsider perspective, it's hard to support points caps and competitiveness measures when they insulate poorly run clubs from the consequences of their own actions.

Alienating the one demographic still keen on participating in contact sport when there's not only rival shute shield clubs and subbies circling, but also league where they can actually get paid is colossally stupid.

As a long-standing member of the Woods, I'm very concerned about the direction the club is heading in. First there's the sacking of two First Grade coaches in as many years and the manner in which it was done leading up to the finals. I am still perplexed why Batger and Telfer deserved to go. Then there was the appointment of Anthony Griffen, an ex-NRL coach, as Director of Rugby and now Head Coach for 2026. I don't know what his Rugby credentials are, but is his appointment behind a lot of the instability at the club? Telfer has now gone back to Gordon and apparently taken some of his prodigies with him. Wouldn't it be another ' up yours' if Gordon wins the premiership next year?

Another festering issue is the time it is taking to relocate to Castle Hill. It's been going on for too long. It was recently reported that an action group in The Hills is fighting the Hills Shire Council to stop the redevelopment of the Fred Caterson Reserve for Eastwood's new home ground. So far we are told that it could happen sometime in 2026, but nothing appears to be certain, despite assurances from the club. It's just not good enough.

I'm an old fart who has lived in the Eastwood-Epping area for most of my life, going back to the days when the club played at Eastwood Oval, before moving to T G Millner. I still live there. I understand that the demographics have changed dramatically over the past few decades and the club has lost a lot of its members who have died off or moved away, not to mention the decline in sponsorship from local businesses. Other clubs have also faced the same dilemma.

Moving to The Hills, where apparently the majority of its membership now resides, was probably the right decision, but there are times when I wonder whether there may have been other options without deserting T G. Pity Ryde Council didn't offer some support instead of belatedly trying to stop T G's redevelopment after the horse has bolted. To some extent, Gordon are in a similar situation with the changing demographics on the North Shore, but they are staying at Chatswood.

With the latest Pacifika fiasco, I'm looking forward to the forthcoming AGM.
