Only wish the powers to be agreed that there is a truckload of grass roots who see this as real footy, and those truckloads of people if supported could / would assist in growing out game.

Good to see him back anyway -- the game needs some characters.

Looks to have been a high turnover of players in most clubs with a lot of new faces.

I'm predicting a big year for Nick Kellaway (Andrew's twin I think) at the Wicks.

Greetings all from sunny Paris, where it's a balmy 7 degrees Celsius. Am over here checking out the set up at Racing Metro for a certain international coach who has his employer by the short and curlies. Stay tuned for more.

Looking forward to the Shute Shield kicking off this weekend. For me, of particular interest will be seeing if Cohen Mason can in fact fill the boots of that great Eastwood stalwart Hugh Perrett. How will the back to back premiers go now head coach John Manenti wont be there "fulltime" with Woody and Hodgie taking the reins on the day to day basis.

My snouts tell me that the Rats also got Iona's great mate and ex Brumbie number 8 colossus Fotu Auelua and that he'll take the field for them this week but they're keeping it all hush hush. Apparently GM/Captain over there Luke Holmes has had to sell a kidney to pay for the both of them but the scar has healed up nicely and Holmesy is fired up and ready to go on a reduced 4 cylinders! Should make for some compelling viewing.


There's not too many familiar names there at the foot of the mountains but I do hope JP and his assistant Dan (dunno his last name) can get them all pointing in the right direction at least. One things for certain, atleast there'll be PLENTY of amber nectar flowing post much with those 2 around. They'll certainly have a great year off the field, which, might be just what they need.

Dave Beat will keep us all informed of the news Manly want us to know, and every now and then some of the news they don't want us to know.

Be interesting to see how Neil Tunnah goes now he has the keys to the city at Concord, from all reports he's a good forwards coach and a genuine bloke.

Hugh Jarse will keep us all informed with the stats, The Coach and Inside Shoulder will give us their technical expertise again and the messiah (as I think someone else called him) BellyTwoBlues will.....................well he'll just tell us how it is. Or has he learned the art of sugarcoating in the offseason?

As an old journo who's been covering this competition for a long long time, I still look forward to the new season every year. For me, sadly I wont be getting to too many games this year as the re-structure at work means I'll be reporting on other sports and not just the rah rahs.

Can't wait.

Likewise Rob Horne. How many times has he not been selected for the Waratahs? He's had a lot of injuries and still amassed 88 games across 9 seasons. Again more so like some after the Super Rugby season.

I'd imagine just like the NRL and the AFL do, they would have just played whatever the highest level available is rather than not play at all.

You have somehow managed to convince yourself that every young and aspiring rugby is as talented and advanced in their rugby potential as Micheal Hooper and Rob Horne.

The fact is, that all great super rugby players started at the same place as everyone else, playing tackle touch basic under 6's rugby. What your proposing, is that we scrap that junior system, whereby clubs provide a fun environment to teach kids about rugby, developing them up through the age groups until which time you hit a more competitive and developed system where SOME players have advanced their skills/size more than others, and are better players AT THAT PARTICULAR TIME. These kids selected play rep footy for CLUBS that are from the shute shield & premier rugby clubs in Queensland. These clubs, and the clubs below (along with school rugby), filter and nurture all players up until the time where each individual decides what path they take. A colts/club program, to playing with subbies, or for a fortunate few a recognised semi professional program.

You seem to believe, like the ARU, that the only players we could possibly produce are those who are hand picked into a system of handing out tracksuits at a young age, being told your the best and brightest (at the time) coached by the same people over and over until your deemed eligible for the big time, which makes that small incestual group of cooaches look awfully good.

Whatever universe your on, stay there DELETED. If you fail to recognise the fact that to even get to the point of being one of 1% that are good enough to play super rugby before even playing in a Shute Shield/Premier Rugby comp, that they still played under 6's like everybody else, they played for a clubs like Epping (eastwood affiliate) Oatley (Southern Districts affiliate). Because one or two players dont follow that whole system, that whole program, means that you want to scrap us? our club rugby? do me a favour, go get me stats on how many wallabies played in the shute shield/premier rugby or equivalent comps compared to wallabies that didnt, and give me number, go way back to the first wallabies to, not just recent history. I bet my life on that more than 90% of wallabies went through these grassroots. Dig us up, you wont even have super rugby teams in 2035.

Dave, on your point about 7s. I think that is extremely relevant. Club Rugby is developing a number of Aus 7s players. Seems to be increasingly more who are joining the program after a couple of years of club rugby.

My previos comment to your utter dribble completely rips apart your disgraceful argument against club rugby. You seem to think that these players just suddenly appear at the age of 16? your parents must have skipped "the talk" on reproduction

Your an idiot. Is every club operating and creating revenue as the same levels of Randwick? How about you do some proper research and check the financials of every club in the shute shield and qld premier rugby. What do you think these competitions are? A money laundering business run by dodgy businessmen for their own personal gain looking to hand out pay packets like you's see in the EPL? You really are a half wit, a murderer of the game.
