To be fair, ASRU deliver about 20 NSW players to Colts each year (about 10 in a year there is no Aust A/Barbars).

These 20 have to be spread across 12 clubs. Even in a perfect socialist world 8 clubs would get 2 players allocated each year. Over 4 years that could amount to 8 players. So the Wix almost doubling that is not that big a rort.

Typically The Corporation get 3, the Wix also average around 3-4., One other club ( this varies from year to year) will get 3, with the rest of the clubs getting 1, occasionally 2 less Emus who are on a duck egg. The M2B and Pirates land a Schoolboy every couple of years.

It would be nice for there to be a more even distribution but these kids are 18-19 years old and not getting paid to play. Most clubs don't have the resources to assist with any relocation and on going housing expenses if they have to move away from home.

Also remember that many talented kids miss out on ASRU selection, and many ASRU reps don't carry that form into Colts/Grade.

Any club that promotes the line "we are promoting growth and depth in our roster through the Colts program" or words to the same general effect is saying that they are aggresively in the market for ASRU and NSWSRU graduates. Some are more successful than others, for a wide variety of factors.

TL;DR. All clubs do it. Some are better at it than others. It's more about perceived opportunities.

Randwick have taken another route by offering scholarships. The 2015 annual report lists 32 players with rugby scholarships. Several of them are in partnership with the University of NSW in the faculties of Business and Built Environment (the St Hilliers Scholarship).
I assume this is a similar concept to the way Sydney University attract young rugby players.
There must be a cost somewhere and I would argue that constitutes "getting paid to play".

The Wicks scholarships vary significantly in value, there are very few full scholarships in my understanding and some are only worth a couple of thousand a year.

I've been told in the past (by a fringe first grader who moved from Uni to Wicks) that the corporation pay all fees as long as you continue to play for them and he was doing a post grad degree. Anyone know whether that's true?

Based on a post from @Bruce Ross a year or two back, Most of the Uni "Scholarships" are in kind (Waiving of rego fees, free/subsidized gym membership, free tracksuit and "stuff", mentoring and tutoring assistance) with little money changing hands, and the value is typically around the $2k mark.

Most of the "assistance" that their rock stars get seem to be via the Campus Colleges, and this is more along the lines of contra - subsidised food and board at the college. The Colleges are independent of the rugby club, but the Club are consulted by the Colleges as to which lads are worthy of receiving scholarships.

Like the Wix, the no cost education scholarships apparently exist as claimed above, but they are extremely rare. I understand that Gordon/UTS also have one of these per year as well. I also hear on the grapevine many players boasting on being on Scholarships and packages at those three (and other clubs) that I know for an absolute fact are nowhere near the value that the players (or parents) claim that they are. Similar to the Scholarships /enrollment anomalies that occur in the AAGPS system. Not all of them are equal.

And while the Tin Foil Hat Brigade are reaching for the pitchforks, the same sorts of Scholarship deals are available through the Elite Athlete Program at UNE in Armidale. Not sure that too many ASRU players explore that avenue for a subsidised education.

I think the scholarship thing is overrated, and most elite school leavers join clubs that they believe is in best interests to join, rather than the mob that is going to pay them the most, either in cash or kind. This is often related to the strength of the coaching program and the potential opportunities (as they perceive or believe them to be) for making the transition to U20 and Pro footy.

Sydney University's location is an advantage in itself.

My principle criticism of the Corporation is primarily that it is not a district club. District clubs are, by definition, sited in the community, where the potential recruits live. They are also expected to do some cmmunity work, down to running junior teams.

The community is where we need to be. I have never said that SUFC does not deserve a seat at the top rugby table. What I have said is that it should use its advantages for the benefit of the whole game.

So they can attract Folau to their "club"? How about then seconding him to be "lent" to Parramatta or Penrith for the term of his playing career?

How about providing resources, in cash and/or in kind, to struggling clubs? Dave Dennis grew up in Penrith's catchment. He could give a bit back to them.

I mean, why the fark not?

In many districts the junior village clubs receive SFA from the Shute Shield club in cash or kind.

Quite a few of the district rep teams for Junior State Champs receive the same from the Shute Shield club, apart from the right to wear their branding.

Some clubs are better than others.

Whilst we in this space, there are about 12 Shute Shield clubs who also receive SFA from the state unions to assist in growing the nursery that is important to grow.

Uni does have junior teams, which are well supported (possibly at the top end of district clubs in this regard but happy to be corrected). You can check out the Annual Report. A number of ex-juniors are now in 1st grade. Not many as yet but increasing every year.

So I get Uni's investment in the development of juniors in Tanya and Albo land and its feeder clubs are Balmain, Canterbury and Petersham in the same way for example that Roos , Raiders, Harbord , Allambie etc are the MMM's constituency. Not sure though how good little Johnny now grown up apprentice tradie of Petersham's prospects are of playing at Camperdown as a home grown colt. Is his community club Uni or Petersham?

Won't say too much in this forum, but I can guarantee that what we offer our players via scholarships etc. is dust compared to what Buildcorp shells out for theirs.

I wish this was a betting exchange and not a forum :)

I'd love to take your start on both Easts & Marlins ( This is by far best side Marlins have fielded all year,so I'm on the fence on that game)
not sure you're on the money with Wicks either!
And despite Gordon's talent for dragging the opposition down to their level,I can't see anything but a convincing Woodies victory.

Went out to North Sydney today to suss out the new SS Grand Final venue. I don't mind it, and if it's going to make the $RU a bit of cash, why not?
I've got to say, that shot from the Manly 7 before half time should definitely have been a yellow card. Not sure how it looked on television, but I reckon he should have gone for sure!
Disappointing to see my Wicks go down, but Rats are my clear second facourite team so I'll cop it.
Onwards and upwards...
Up the Wicks!
