The $64000 question isn't it.

All logic says that this will be the Marlins year, with a tight matchup in the GF against the Woodies.

These two have been a cut above the rest, although as the season unfolded they have both shown their vulnerabilities when they have turned in substandard performances. Ironically the Beasts only managed to win 5 games all year, once against MMM by a bees appendage, and an absolute thrashing of the Woodies being two of their victories. Go figure.

There will be at least one upset in the finals and I can see that Buildcorp is the most likely team to produce that upset but without their usual influx of professionals returning from SupeRugby duties, they may struggle to go all the way.

I reckon that, while entertaining to watch, Warringah were have done their dash, with all their petrol used up in the return Rat Park Derby against the old foe. With that result, I reckon that they will be happy with their seasons performance regardless of what happens in the Finals.

The Hobbits and Wicks will not go down without a fight, but probably will bow out of the finals series in the first week. The challenge for the MMM and Woodies is to maintain fitness this weekend and not suffer too many injuries, although both clubs have admirable depth to cover the loss of one or two.

If you have been following my chicken entrails readings disguised as weekly tips throughout the year, you would know that the above has about as much chance of happening as we have of winning back the Bledisloe Cup, so take it with a grain of salt.

Nearly impossible to split Manly and Eastwood for mine and you know that Uni, with all their experience, will be a massive threat. I can't see anyone outside of those three mounting a serious challenge, though I've thoroughly enjoyed the way the Rats have played this season.

Was able to watch the replay of Warraingah vs Eastwood clash and was stunned when the Rats resorted to uncontested scrums with 20+ minutes to play. Clubs now have an extra reserve and should have no excuse for not having 2 props on the bench.

They may have had 2 props on the bench but the 2nd prop might have considered himself a specialist tight head and therefore not been prepared to play loose head.

I actually think Shute Shield teams can have a very legitimate excuse for not having 2 props and that is that 1 of the props may have been injured in 2nd grade.

It was shameful that the rats went uncontested - none of their second grade props got injured in the previous game and the big fella they brought on at LHP and then got injured looked like voluntary substitution - the starting LHP looked pissed off that he was being subbed in the first half of the game.

I suggest it was just cynical play to get a better platform at scrum time.

Southern Districts second grade did it the week before against Eastwood second grade. They subbed their whole front row off at half time (and they all stood by as reserves for 1s) and then immediately one of the replacement props went down injured - so uncontested scrums for most of the second half.

There is a bit of wiggle room in the operational guideline as it states that

21.1 All teams must have sufficient front
row players to play at hooker, tight-head
prop and loose-head prop who are suitably
trained and experienced to ensure that on
the first occasion that a replacement in
each front row position is required, the
team can continue to play safely with
contested scrums.


So while they must have three suitable qualified front rowers one could argue that LHPs and THPs are not interchangeable. I hope we don't see uncontested scrums in the finals series.

lily i believe its due to Warringah 2s needing to be at some spot that their first grade are. According to the strict rule of the draw manly would also be playing at manly oval if it werent for this complication.

It was explained to me but didn't really understand it. It has something to do with second and third grade teams (I think Warringah) in the two sets of Saturday finals being at different locations and so can't reserve). They therefore had to be shifted to one location.

Tis all so shameful that this "up & coming" 34 year old has a place in the NRC. Nothing personal against the man - just a poor piece of rugby admin methinks
