I just wanted to mention and thank both Sydney Uni and Tuggeranong Vikings for travelling out to Bathurst last weekend and playing some outstanding, hard, fast and intense rugby. This 'trial' game was for the Australian club championship and I can tell you, both clubs wanted to win at all costs. In the end, uni won the game 50 - 41. Seven games were played on the day with Bathurst Bulldogs playing against Uni colts (3) and Uni 4th/5th grade, Central West rep teams playing uni colts (2) and Uni 3rds and Vikings playing Uni in first and second grade and first grade colts. Uni bought up 7 teams (about 170' players and officials) and Vikings bought up about 90. Uni conducted a coaching session at local rugby nursery Stannies and Vikings did similar with Bathurst juniors on Saturday morning. The way both of these clubs conducted themselves is a credit to them. The kick start to the rugby season in Bathurst can not be overstated. The amenities and hospitality shown to these clubs was top class and we hope these types of trials can come west of the mountains again in the future. Such a treat for 'bush' rugby.

Bullfrog which Brisbane club team did the Vikings or Uni eliminate to qualify this game as the Australian club championship? That said your comments echo Manly's very positive experience in the Hunter last week as well . The more pre season visits or exchanges between Shute shield and ACT clubs with the bush the better - Grass roots in action

Southern Districts had too much pace and too much intensity for Parramatta in the main game at Barden Ridge today, looking very sharp as they ran in a boatload of tries to a couple from Parra. In the earlier games, Parra seem to have some reasonable depth and easily accounted for Souths in each of the 3 "minor" games.

Good feed back, any other updates from around the grounds

Uni 14 Randwick 0. No lower grade results. 0-0 half time.

Uni played with too much discipline and structure, and dominated forward play. Very strong on defence.

Wicks made too many basic skills errors which prevented them from building too much pressure. Very individualistic sort of game plan (or absence of game play).

Parra played a 1/2 squad today. Our '2's beat Souths 59-12 and lower grades went Parras way convincingly.

Randwick won 2s by a couple of tries and uni won 3 n 4s by a couple of tries.

Agree, Randwick system although effective in patches left for a lot of individuals to be isolated at times in which Uni pounced upon. However the difference was in the set piece. Uni scrum was very dominant and Randwick lineout was poor turning over a lot of pill.

In the know I think.

Wests have a senior and a colts squad in Auckland.
Played Glenfield. Wests won both games 17-8 in Colts and 56-0, 10 tries to none, in the 1st grade trial.
They play Silverdale next week.

Eastwood beat East in all four grades.

First grade was 5 tries to 2. Scrappy, lots of dropped ball. Not much to talk about. ALthough I did note that Andrew Ferris (last years Aust schools halfback) played the last 10 minutes or so in first grade for easts. Will be interesting to see if he stays up in grade or goes back to colts.

For some reason the games were transferred from TG Milner to a paddock at Woollahra with no line line markings (apart from sidelines and trie lines) or posts!!!

I have to say I can't wait for 6/4 to roll around.
Even if the rugby's crap and the Wicks are still struggling at least we'll have something other than the bloody 3rd bloody tier to talk about!
I'm so over it:mad:

Agree - I love the ABC match of the day and always watch it. Will Gordon have 3 colts teams this season?

After a discussion over the Dinner table tonight, Googling for any definitive information on the Player Points system drew a blank, so I turned to good old gaggerland archives. Eyes and Ears had this to say about the system and how it worked back in 2010.

The points system is based on what category of player you were at the start of the current calendar year ie if you played S14 in 2010 for the first time, you are not yet considered a S14 player. First Grade Teams are allowed 140 points.

Points work as follows:
Wallaby - 20 points
S14 - 16 points
>40 1st Grade games or Aust Schools or U20 Rep in last 2 years - 10 points
>25 1st Grade games - 6 points
>50% 1st Colts in 2009 or Div 1 State Schools Rep in last 2 years - 4 points
The rest - 2 points

Discounts
1 point for each year of service to club (max 5)
100% discount for >7yrs service to same club

NB This is a summary not the full rules.

There is a cap of 50 points at Colts 1 which prevents teams from acquiring lots of school rep players.

U11-U17 Juniors do count for loyalty discount.

There is a 5 point discount (Father and Son) but only in your first year with the club.

There are also other subtle variations to the rules such as lower grade players who back up on the bench for the higher grade do not attract any points for the higher grade points cap.

Does the system still apply as described by Eyes and Ears way back when?

Are the full rules on player points cap only available from those in the know at a club?

Players who participate in a lower grade game on the same day (which may only mean running on for 1 minute) are not treated as fresh reserves for a higher grade and so attract zero points in the higher grade. In the playoffs, a club which only has first grade playing can name fresh reserves without them attracting any points ie so they are not penalised for not having a 2nd grade game.
The points assigned to each player are posted on the Waratah website after each game. You need to look at the team lists in the results section which shows both the points scored by each player and the player points.
