Shute Shield 2011

At a club level I think you look after the running of the club and making sure your debts are paid and whatnot before you start paying players. These are amateur players, they are obviously not in it for the money. It would be great to be able to give them some match payments, but if the club can't afford it, the players will understand.

I think the shute shield either has to support an 3rd tier comp, or be willing to expand to try and fill the void left by not having one.

Nice sentiment.
Unfortunately the reality in club Rugby is a little different.
Look to your own club for example.

For Schmoo and Gits, they were registered by Balmain for the one game only. I play for Epping - their opposition on the day, and did some digging to make sure it was legit.
They are allowed to move for premier rugby to subbies once only, then can move back to premiership. They can't go on and off.

If the players understood that, then no club would pay any player anything!
In the real world it doesn't work like that. Some will always move for a better offer. clubs will always run on the smell of an oily rag.

I think you've misunderstood what I was trying to say.

Wouldn't the players then want a slice of the pie. I cant see this working due to the clubs not being able to pay all the players.

Obviously players will change clubs if a better offer (monetary, a scholarship or just a higher chance of success) comes up.

This is the reason I was extoiling the values of a commercial TV deal, as it would mean more money for the clubs, and therefore better match payments. However what I was trying to say is that even with more money, the players still wouldn't expect be paid much due to the semi-professional nature of the competition.

That's the last comment I'll make on the subject. Sorry to hijack the thread but I think its a topic that needs to be discussed.

Back to the rugby.

I thought there was a move to try to oust some clubs from certain clubs last year, Im sure it wouldnt be hard to guess which clubs they would be the ousted and oustees.
Im sure things are not all warm and fussy in clubland, jury out on what the SRU can bring to the classroom.
Not going into the national club debate but for calls of again cutting teams in the comp, are we sure these players are taken up elsewhere? Im not sure Subbies can support the calibre of the grade player across the board. Maybe Grade and Subbies need to work together, having played in bothe they are unique in their own ways but should never work against each other.
Fifth were dropped some years ago yet half the clubs run an unoffical comp. Plus it would financially be a big blow for the clubs at the bar etc etc.
Whats the latest out west? Any support since the disaster with Parra last year?

Uni have announced their coaching staff for next year. Todd Louden and Daniel Manu in 1st grade with Mark Bell as scrum coach.

Inspired choice. Louden polarizes supporters. I think he will achieve success with the students but that success will be attributed to anyone apart from Louden.

I don't think he "polarizes supporters", HJ, but he always seems to have plenty of enemies working in the background.

And this time around and with this club the success or failure will be attributed to him, as it should be.

Apart from some great coaching appointments throughout the grades, how's this for a line up of specialist support coaches:

Club Scrum Coach - Mark Bell
Club Lineout Coach - Todd Dammers
Defence Coach - Joel Wilson
Grade Specialist Skills Coach - Drew Hickey
Colts Specialist Skills Coach - Dave Pearson
Kicking Coach - Chris Malone
Strength & Conditioning Team - Tim Leahy & Tristan Sharp

Maybe polarises is a bit strong but he certainly has his detractors as evidenced when His name has been put forward in various threads as a potential WBs, 'Tahs, reds, force etc replacement coach.

The anti-Louden mob will always find ways to justify their bias and will attribute any success this year to anything as long as it is not Todd.

Jared Barry is an old Eastwood junior and he and Allcock were mates together in Barker's 2005 First XV. I think it's a case of a mate following a mate rather than some purge by the Woodies on the Highlanders stocks.

However I must say the club isn't as strong since Lachlan Fear was terminated as the head coach. Many players followed him out of the club. Even next season we see two of their best juniors, the Goodman brothers, commence with Uni Colts. With the coaching set-up described by Bruce you can't blame them.

Bruce, are Wilson, Hickey and Malone joining Uni after the 2010/11 NH season or have they left their overseas clubs?

Interesting name of Todd Dammers there Bruce.
Last I heard he was in Japan after leaving the Head honcho job at Nudgee a year back. He had great success there and had NC at the top of the tree for a number of years. He didn't endear himself to the Ross Oval populace when he had the balls to drop fancied prima donna scholarship players who were not performing. Really took a knock when TSS def NC 15-0 in 2009 and the side never recovered but I doubt it was the coach.
A damned good coach.

Yes, I understood exactly where you were coming from, HJ. Interestingly, he is very much a favoured son at Uni where I have never heard anyone bag him. He is remembered for his pivotal role, with Martin Harland, in setting up the EDS program.

The same cannot be said at Randwick where he not only played but was also a very successful first grade coach, although some of the legendary figures at that club regard him very highly.
