How was that penalty a dangerous tackle?

Steve Walsh is refereeing this game out of his arse.

The Shute Shield has become a sick joke, if you aren't Sydney University you don't have any chance of winning whatsoever.

Coupled with the fact that the game is at the sandpit that is University Oval.

Great try there by Kane Douglas.

Hopefully we can jag another try and really make University nervous.

25 minutes: Another PK 5 metres out to Hobbits. Tackler not releasing Samo (Barnes). Kick at goal taken. Morath success. Uni 26 Hobbits 20.

Uni not committing anyone to R&M. Hobbits having to grind up field. Piggies getting tired.

28 minutes: Uni Try Nathan Charles burst sets up speedy Mitchell. Barnes provides the icing. Uni 33 Hobbits 20.

Hobbits Sub: Palmer off, Henderson on

30 minutes: PK vs Samo not releasing. Hobbits grinding up very slowly. Fatties will be very tired. Barnes lines up (8 from 8 at the office today) Uni 36 Hobbits 20

31 mintes: Uni Sub. McDulling on Dennis off.
33 min: Hobbits Sub: Smart on Timani off
35 min: Uni Sub: Kelly on Beetham off.
Douglas injured with lower leg issue. Still on. Game restarts.
Hobbits in Uni 22 - 16.5 minutes. Uni in Hobbits - 9 minutes.

41:16: Steve Walsh blows time and its Mad Monday for the Hobbits. Uni 36 vs Hobbits 20.

It's Uni Vs Wicks in repeat of about 3 of the last 6 Grand Finals.

Uni defence was far too good for Souths. Tackle count reversed in 2nd half Uni made 150 tackles, Hobbits 104.
Possession 54% Hobbits, 46% Uni. Time in Opp 22 : Hobbits 20 minutes, Uni 9 minutes.

Another hard grafting game, with the Souths never giving up but seeming to run out of ideas and luck. Hobbits attack was too slow allowing Uni too much time to realign their defence lines and not to commit too many to R&M.

Man of the Match: B Barnes. Special mention for R Samo and J Jenkins.

The game was lost by Southern in the backs. No threat and no attack from the backs at all.

Samo has shown why he doesn't get higher honours after the few tests he got. He just goes missing and gets lazy for long periods of the game.

Southern just weren't in the game after 10 minutes, and I couldn't see where they could score. I do hope that the referees have a nice long look at the Uni tactics at the breakdown. The tackler almost never rolls away and impedes quick ball.

Souths never gave up, but neither did University who were very clinical. The Students out thought, and out muscled the brave boys from the Shire. They were probably fitter on a tough 25 degree day at home.

Souths will probably rue this one as a game that got away from them. They were unable to complete their execution at key times in the game. The pitch was no help to both sides, but one wonders what the outcome would have been at a neutral venue. I suspect the scoreline would have been closer but Uni just seemed to have answers for anything Souths threw at them.

They Students played with a confidence and there was never any sense of panic in their play, when Souths got ahead initially, when they lost Jerry YaniYani, when Douglas scored to reduce the Students lead. The game really turned on Souths inability to cross the lime after sustained pressure just before half time.

Uni just absorbed and smothered Souths attack after oranges.

Souths' halves were incredibly indecisive. Their 10 & 12 were getting the ball flat footed, which made them mince meat for the quality Uni defence. Waqa was impressive in their backs, he seemed to be able to offload at will. But the pack carried the entire load and I think that was too much for them. They ran out of petrol.

As to Uni's breakdown tactics - I have no idea how they get away with it. Eastwood's success this year is partly because they've taken a leaf out of Uni's book there, and have cheated like Kiwis. I just know I'd much rather watch Souths play than Uni.

I think Uni's pack can play a lot better - their breakdown work & support play in attack was not up to their usual standards. Inman is a bastard to match up to, and if Cummins is out, he will give Randwick fits.

That's a bit harsh, Skullring.

As a Souths fan I am deeply offended by that.

In saying that though Steve Walsh must be a Uni old boy with the rubbish one sided refereeing today.

It's little wonder Uni win all the time as they get all the favourable refereeing decisions all the time.

No wonder we can't win as Uni have 16 players on the field(their 15 plus referee Walsh).

Thanks for explaining the insult, not like anyone wouldn't get it.
You have a lot of hate, SW. Let it go... :)

What are you talking about? It is amateur rugby, could be classified as semi-pro as some professionals were playing. It's comparable to the NSW Cup. Have you seen those games?

I understand but channel surfers & casual sporting fans probably don't. Its the highest level of rugby being played domestically. If people want to watch rugby from may-sept, that's their only choice. And it compares very poorly.

points from me:

a) grounds on both games where extremely poor. Some terrible injuries (5from my count) came out of the weekend. Why doesn't syd have good grounds to play on? canberra does.
b) refs terrible. lots of knock on missed and high tackles called that weren't. also have to agree about unis breakdown tactics.
c) level of rugby was pretty poor overall.
d) KB (Kurtley Beale) still isnt a first receiver, better as a floater
e) barnes was fantastic, now do it at Super level, then test, then we'll love you.

congrats to uni. played the better game. Hope next week can be better.

One more observation from all of the Shute Shield this year - Tom Carter is involved in at least one off field push and shove which he initiates. I really do not like him as a player and hope to see Hangers, Barnes, Horne for the Tahs next year.

I don't understand what value add he offers the Tahs?
He is not big, not fast, has average ball skills.
He cannot be the best option the Tahs have surely.

On a different tack - I had hoped that Samo had matured somewhat. The Reds cannot consider using him as a starter (unless as a last resort) as he just fades in and out of games. This wasn't the first time I saw this with him for Southern this year. That he is immensely gifted, can run, offload, tackle etc etc is not in doubt, but I do doubt now if he can apply himself for even 40 minutes consistantly as required above club land (even required in clubland finals). I will go so far to say the Pirates made a big mistake in starting him over Vaea who made huge inroads when he came on. Samo is better used to come on with 20 or 30 to go and under strict instructions to leave nothing in the tank.

At 105kg he is a bit on the slight side. Nonsense like that says more about the writer than the player under attack.

105kg is surprising, that is bigger than Umaga & Nonu. I would never have picked that.
SBW is apparently 108kg, he appears to be huge in comparison.
I wonder why he is tackled so easily?
He appears to be very popular with his peers, so they obviously appreciate whatever it is that he does.

Maybe it's because there's a fair chance he won't niggle them or start fights with them.
I agree he is pretty limited, apart from defense where he is good.
105kg? Seems a bit on the generous side.
