At least one Aussie Green n Gold team had a win this weekend. Wonderful, heart-stopping game from the mighty Highlanders against the Woods yesterday.

Reading of the `classifieds' indicates it was 4 out of 4- every grade!

Didnt see 4ths or 3rds. 2nds were struggling for quite a while, mainly due to a number of unforced errors/poor handling etc. Managed to put it together in the final quarter though with the forwards putting in the hard yards, particularly second rower Jarrod Barry who I rate as a good prospect (he played firsts whilst Ed Gower was on the Brumbies European development tour). Jarrod displayed all the classical traits of a lock by standing at second five and using a beautiful soft hand flick pass to set up the final try!

Re: 2009 Shute Shield

Should be a top game on TV today Uni v Eastwood – 1st against 4th; though both teams will be in the finals anyway and Easts v Manly may have been better TV fare.

There have been some good games recently in the Shute Shield and it doesn't take much imagination to suppose that the top 4-5 Sydney teams would do well in the Kiwi ANZC comp. Mind you, you would have to suppose further that the club non-Super14 players had come through a black hole of the rugby universe and had the same rugby experience of Kiwi non-Super14 players for a few years.

The Rats jumped out of the wannabe pack last weekend in their best attacking display of the year. Their best game was probably a gritty loss against Randwick at Coogee Oval, but it was good to see a game of rugby where players thought about running with the ball first, most of the time.

I was at the game but everybody must have noticed on TV that my earlier assessment of Josh Holmes as a promising inside centre was not far off the mark. It is a big step from the Shute Shield to Super rugby but how handy will Josh be on the bench next year for the Tahs?

I don't know that the Rats can play at that level every week from now on but we may find out later today after they play the Rebels at Forshaw Park. They have got to win to guarantee a finals spot – or at least get great friends, Manly, to beat the Easts Beasts. The Rebels are no pushover these days and it must be great for them to have Robbie Horne back on deck. Maybe that's the wrong terminology: Horne has been out of school 2 years now but I can't remember that he has ever been fit enough to play for his club. He plays 13 with Force midfielder Tatapu at 12.

As the Rebels won't make the finals it will be Hornes's last game of the season. A pity: at the start of the S14 this year I had him pegged as a smokey for the Wallabies EOYT.

We will be seeing a few players from the Shute Shield putting their hands up for places in the 5th Oz Super squad. One will be the Rats no.8 Trevor Richardson who was in the Connacht squad under Rats coach, John McKee, a few years back. He came over to try his hand at league, a couple of years ago IIRR, and ended up playing for the Mounties at Mt. Pritchard last year. But he got bored doing hit-ups as a front-rower and called McKee to ask for a go with the Rats in 2009. After one game in 3rd Grade he has been in the Ones for the whole season.

He's already had some interest from Europe but he wants to settle down here. If he's good enough to get into the squad he should be eligible by residence by the start of the 2011 season.

Lock Dylan Sigg of Manly is another from my neck of the woods who may be pencilled in. He comes back to club rugby today at the Woollhara cabbage patch, against his old Beasts club. He wasn't injured: he had a misunderstanding with a Northern Suburbs player a month ago and has been cooling his heels. Sigg has been in the Tahs system and is a top athletic 2nd rower at club level. Manly haven't won since he's been missing IIRR and they need him back.

Sigg and Richardson are only two players of interest, but all of the top Sydney teams have a couple of candidates for the 5th squad – or for an existing squad to cover for defections to Melbourne.

In other news Adam Freier, who has been out since shredding a bicep in the Super14, makes his comeback, in 2nd Grade for Randwick. Talking of Green Slime hookers: 1st Grader “Neo” Halangahu, is heading off soon to play semi-pro rugby in Ireland.

Dave Harvey the Gordon 10/15 is also off to European rugby – in Italy, but for only one year; so he's likely available for 2011. Good player.

Uni 41-0 over Eastwood. At half time...
Watching it on the box. That playing surface looks ordinary.

Is Uni that good or are Eastwood having an off day?

Rebels and Rats draw. A decent year at home for for the Rebels. Need to produce away from home to be a serous contender though/

Hard to see uni not winning from here though.

Nothing like a good close game ;-)

Unfortunately for me, Gordon's semi final is next Saturday and clashes with the sailing season. Will pop down to Forshaw on Sunday to watch enjoy the demise of Manly.

Jesus! Is the comp really that skewed?

Re: 2009 Shute Shield

Don't know whether it had anything to do with the quality of the opposition but Uni winger Edwards looked pretty good.

Re: 2009 Shute Shield

Damn good speckie - he has improved with every game that I have seen him play this year and must be another Sydney grade player who is pencilled in for future reference. Has a bit of toe too. Uni fullback Trist is another possibility and meantime winger Ed Jenkins is absent from Uni and playing for Taranaki - and started last week. Pencil his name too.

Geez Eastwood were bloody awful and were ordinary a few weeks ago at Rat Park too. Uni are good, but not that good.

Uni and Randwick look a class above, but with Halangahu superb at this level, you would have to back the students to win the chockies.

Again.
