That's a strong 22. If they had a slightly better scrumhalf and maybe a better midfield they'd be very, very good. Obviously a very tough forward pack there, great in the tight and excellent in the scrum. BdP plays like a flanker so they'll be excellent in rucks. Wouldn't want to come up against them at full strength.

The Sharks have a midfield crisis now for years. They tried Joubert in 12 lately with no success. He is a 13 and Whitehead in 12 will be a much better combo. Hoffman still have to settle down in the 9 jersey. If he develop anything close to what myself know he can, he will be full value for them. If they can fix their backline, they will be tough. No doubt about it.

With Viljuon recruited, why not play Lambe at 12 outside Michilak?

Viljoen is versatile aswell. best for SA Rugby if they can keep Lampie in his preferred 15 position. Viljoen played a lot of rugby in 10 for Griquas in the CC. He can even play 9.

Can't play Hargreaves at 4. He is a pig pussy. He even got dropped out of the match 22 in the semi.

They played Deysel at 4 in the semi and final. interesting. Paarl who is the Marais fella at lock? 4 or 5?

I think they have an issue at openside. Bots has not adapted to the game over the last two years. he got owned last year when he played. Daniel is NOT an openside's left nut.

This very fact cost them last year. I was at the game in London and they got summarily fucked up at the breakdown and Minnie also gave them the arse in the Currie Cup final (fuck me, there is one tough bastard for you).

Talented youngster, saw him first when we played them in Derbin and made a huge impact from the bench in a lost course. Played also SA U20 a year back. Schooled from Welkom

Minnie and Strauss hurt us at the breakdowns in the semi aswell. Cant understand coaches playing without dark place workers in the modern game.

Blue, it seems that you South Africans have a clear distinction between #4/#5 locks. Almost as distinct as the two flankers. What's the criteria for each?

From another thread...

There is no doubt Whitelock is a promising young player, but would he be considered a replacement for Brad Thorn? They seem to be different type of players to me. In South Africa the two locks (2nd rowers) are almost considered two completely different positions. The number 4 lock is generally the hard worker, usually not a very flashy player but makes his presence felt in the rucks and mauls and scrums etc (Bakkies Botha). Whilst the number 5 lock is generally the lineout organiser, usually more athletic and might have a tendency to play a slightly 'looser' game (Victor Matfield). Whitelock to me seems more of a number 5 type lock, while Thorn was definitely a number 4.

Any thoughts on this? Other countries, particularly Australia, do not appear to have such a distinction between the two positions and they appear to be far more inter-changeable.

I confess to knowing less than perhaps I should about you South Africans'. However, I do recall talk of Tim Whitehead being a real talent a few seasons ago. I guess the stormers have a glut of talent in the centres, but I for one will be very interested to see how Whitehead goes at 12.

Paarl Gym and WP have been the midfield factory in SA. Marius Joubert (Sharks) Dylan des Fountain (Lions) Jean Stemmet (Griquas) Johann Sadie (Brutes) Jean de Villiers (Stormers) all coming from the Paarl Gym mill. Interesting Jean de Villiers was yesterday visiting the Paarl Gym Prymary kiddies and had a motivation talk while Marius visited my work. Asked him about the final and he said it was his twin boet playing on saturday and not him.

Anyway Whitehead seem to played well in the Varsity Cup but havent made the CC stepup and injuries did no help his course. maybe he'll settle in nicely at the Sharks who wanted him since last year.

Sharks need a change up imo, when is Plumtree's contract up?

No idea but I think they are due a change.

Plumtree has hardly been innovative. he has struggled to recruit a decent midfield in years and he sticks to a very predictable game plan.

Thanks for that Brisbok, it actually makes a lot of sense.

Very few locks in SA can play both roles. They are cast in their role from their young days.

The Sharks this season have played Skeate, more of a 5, at 4 with some success this year. Might continue into next season.

Agree Blue. Although up until his injury this year, I thought Andries Bekker was making a good case for perhaps starting in the 2nd row with Matfield at the world cup. He seems to have improved his physicality significantly and was getting stuck-in in the tight. His injury robbed the coaching staff of that option at the world cup (not that they would have used it anyway!) and he certainly would've been a handy impact player. If he can remain fit he will be a solid replacement for Victor.
