The Sharks had a bit of a disappointing 2008 season. The best thing for them was finishing on top of the CC log despite having lost lots of players to the Bokke cause. That showed they have player debt.

They will go in the 2010 season with many more player gain then losses. Their losses are Spinnekop (Albert van den Berg) who in anyway was a bit of a waiste , to Japan, Skipper Bardenhorst (Cheetahs) but they add some good stock (Luddick, Alberts & Gerhard Mostert from the Lions and a few exchange between them and the Cheetahs. du Mont will head to the Tin Ears but they do get a talented Tin Ear in Johan Wessels. Then they add another Paarl Gym jewel midfielder , Jean Stemmet from Maties (the top try scorer in the Varsity Cup).

There is also rumours about John Smit that may move to the Lions.

This is more or less the players they'll have.

1. Mtawarira, Carstens, Cilliers
2. Du Plessis, Burden
3. Smit, Jannie Doep,
Locks Sykes, Muller, Halgreave, Mostert
6. Botes, Wessels,
7. Deysel, Daniels,
8. Kankowski, Alberts,
9. Pienaar, Kockott, McClead, Cronje
10. Hernandez, Cronje, Pienaar
Wings Pieterson, Ndungane, Jordaan, Movovo
12. Swanepoel, Stemmet, Vulindlu
13. Jacobs, Strauss
15. Terblanche, Luddick

The Sharks will be a settled unit and real debt in players. Time for Plumtree to start getting results with the soldiers he have.

The word you're looking for is depth, not debt Paarl my good friend. ;)

Looks like a reasonable Sharks squad.
If it does eventually transpire (and I see the Lions are fighting it) the addition of Ludik is pretty exciting.

Lock and centre looks so-so.
The rest pretty decent.

Now they just need to get their heads right!

No worries, I knew what you meant.
It was just for Tom Carter's (a.k.a. WJ) sake that I pointed out what you meant. :lmao:

Sharks will have new kit this year.

The Boss man looks trims and slim in black.

And at least at S14 level he won't have as hard a time at prop. Until Dr Benn Robinson gets him on the shrink's couch to dig up a few repressed memories ;)

I think we'll see Smit alternate between 2 and 3 this year. Late switches to 3 and maybe the odd start. Strong rumours that BJ Botha is heading back to SA which based on the last three Ulster games I saw with him at 3 makes me want to sing.

Cool jersey. I like the Sharks as a top 4 side haven't seen the draw for them but I think they'll be better in 2010.

Travelled well in 2008 & 2009 & put to bed that old whinge that the Saffas have got the rough end of the stick with all the extra travel.

They seem to play well in NZ.

Big blow for the Sharks. Argie 10 Hernandez is gone for the season. They will be forced to play Pienaar at 10 with Monty Dumons at backup. That's not very encouraging. Pinaar has been absoloutely terrible at 10.

They were terrible last season after a promising start. A lot of those problems started at 10 and will continue.

I think they have no chance of making top 4. It's a real pity. Hernandez is a class act and I was looking forward to seeing him in action.

They are seriously stuffed.

someone might be able to confirm this or not, but isnt Pienaar injured at the moment, either his injured or his overcoming injury and the Sharks are concerned because his rehabilitation is taking a lot longer then initially planned and has put his S14 season in doubt.

This is exaberated by Hernandez been out injured, its a shame because i was really excited to see Hernandez play

Hernandez is a pain in the ass to watch. Drop goals, up and unders, and moments of sheer stupidity (usually relating to drop goals). Give me Pienaar any day of the week.

The only injury Pienaar have is what he got from honeymoon. Look like he'll be back for round 1. Myself expect the Cronje Twins (Hansie's nephews) to make some impact in this years S14. Bit small frame but their heart and skills makes more then up for it. The 9 one played SA U20 last year and the 10 one played last year from the bench for the Sharks.

The Sharks have a healthy depth tho and myself think their bioggest challenge this year will be their fixture list. They go on tour in the early part of the S14 and if they have their usual good tour , they'll end up in the top part of the S14 ladder.

They have a lot of depth in the locks, Muller/Gerhard Mostert (Lions)/ Halgraeve (a fine young talente, capt the SA U19s and one of a few Bok dirt trackers that showed promis) & Steven Sucks (played for the Emergency Bokke against the BIL) add their all Bok frontrow, great losies (watch blond Johan Wessels from the Cheetahs) and you have one of the better packs in the S14. Throw in a form Pienaar/Jacobs/Murray/JP/Terreblache/Luddick and you get the real thing.

Think they'll move Terriblanche to win for Ludik to play 15?

I think their season will depend 100% on how Pienaar plays.

Well Luddick is a bloody good winger. He and JP on the wing will be pretty good. Lets not forget that the Sharks topped the CC log despite their Bok players out with the 3 Nations. Thats say a lot for them and they have been good tourists in the past. If they get stuck in on tour they'll be there towards the end.

Perpignan flyhalf Steve Meyer could be the man drafted in to help ease the Sharks' flyhalf injury concerns.

Sharks may find themself a new coach next year

SARugby.com
The Sunday News reports that Sharks coach John Plumtree has applied for the position of coach of the Hurricanes next season. Incumbent boss Colin Cooper has revealed that he will step down from the position ahead of the expanded Super 15 next year.

Plumtree coached Wellington to three NPC finals during 2001-2006 and joined the Sharks coaching team after he was unable to land a Super 14 deal in New Zealand. Other applicants for the position include current Wellington Lions coach Jamie Joseph, Clermont coach Vern Cotter, former All Black hooker Mark Hammett, Dave Rennie and Hawke's Bay boss Peter Russell.
