School sporting scholarships/recruitment

Spot on.
The problem with the pathway ATM is that they have been picking winners at 16.
Very few 16yo state reps fail to be picked in the opens.
Then the 20's reps are drawn from the open schoolboys..
I think it's madness selecting elite squads at these lower age groups.
By all means conduct specialised coaching clinics for these age groups, but don't restrict it.
And if you do restrict it,then those attending Schools with well regarded Rugby programs are the first to be excluded, they don't need to attend sessions that basically duplicate what they are already doing.

Currently doing some tinkering around the dark side development programs and have come down to a separate view that less there would be so much more.

Therefore despite some of my previous posts around the consequent opportunities for kids to access a GPS education I think the development pathways would benefit from broader schemes as suggested above but zero scholarships and less emphasis on elitism in schoolboy rugby. Just like the GPS Code of Conduct.

Having said that I will now hop back on my hobby horse that zero is zero and all stand accused. If zero is the correct answer for rugby then all GPS Headmasters owe our sport an apology.

And would you believe that some schools have already started 2014 training 3-6 days a week. I was talking to a boy on the weekend who has had 2 weeks off rugby in 2013.

That possibly explains why some Year 11 (2014 Under 17) boys who think that they may have a shot at 1st XV for 2014 from some schools have been noticed absent from the Junior Gold Cup Programme trials, or have declined their guaranteed entry to that programme on the basis of their National U16 team selections.

No self -denial, simply statement of fact.

The code binds the behaviour of member schools/headmasters in terms of offering inducements. The code doesn't place any burden on boys not to accept, they are enrolling in good faith. Very difficult to break a rule which doesn't exist. 'nullum crimen sine lege' (No crime without a law)

The punishment to the school is not basking in the glory of winning GPS games/competitions.

The AAGPS 'code' also clearly outlines the expected conduct of individuals close to the teams, in the teams and even spectators.

I think it is likely that these breaches will become more newsworthy than scholarships. Some of the breaches of the AAGPS 'code' ex scholarships has been much more serious, and also more than newsworthy. Strange they have not got more airtime but then there are subjects which people generally don't like to talk about.

The AAGPS code is not all about scholarships, but this thread is.

Do they select a School Rep Basketball team for AAGPS?

If so would the Scots Basketballers be available for selection?
Yes they do. GPS 1sts and 2nds are chosen just like any other sport. Not hard to find on Google. And yes, Scots players have featured in them in the last few years.

Yeah, I tend to agree. I would have thought that the point of schoolboy rugby is to help develop the man. Not to win at all costs.
I'd definitely agree, schoolboy rugby needs to set the platform and teach fundamentals to catapult young talent towards a successful career.

We'll be at school holidays soon without resolution on Mr Lambert's little problem.
Well Newington and High are the only teams to have played Scots in 1sts and 2nds basketball, so unless something changes or someone blinks, one assumes that this will be repeated in Term 1.

It will be interesting to see if other sports are drawn into the dispute as alluded to by Dr Vallance.

A reasonably large number of them are water Polo players,& a few cricketers! Bound to be a few rugby players there as well.
REALLY???? Who would have thunk it??? ;)
But, and its a big but. Do you honestly think thatmore than a few of them might be Rugby Union players???
FFS, there are SIXTY ONE TALENTED ATHLETES as described by this bloke. I tend to be a little sceptical here by thinking that there are maybe a little more than just these boys and men.
Take out 15 of the silly game bubbleballers. 5 cricketers across the age groups, maybe 6 as cricket is only the focal point when you get the governing body to pay.
That leaves 40 boys and men. Half a doz on the water polo that leaves 2 full Rugby teams!!! Plus a couple of reserves.
As has been highlighted by many others particularly regarding one age group, and the Central Coasts lads mum who says her son is still on the Rugby scholarship, that obviously there are inequities here. The selected reviewer may regard a NON talented athlete as a non maybe GPS/state representative level?
Who gave the parameters for "Talented Athlete"?

Somehow I think that MIC's of Rugby and a group of headmasters won't be taking overseas holidays this Christmas...

Dr Lamberts letter said Donaldson concluded that "Of the 212 boys from years 7 to 12 receiving assistance 61 could be described as good sportsmen.” ( rather than the term talented athletes , maybe that was used elsewhere ) The term good sportsman nevertheless still begs the same question as to what are the parameters. But it does sound somewhat wider in scope than players of either GPS/state representative level.

I doubt there's the stomach for bringing on a rugby standoff. All the schools see it as too important and too integral to what being a GPS school is apparently about.
I think Shore and SIC may have the stomach for it but the others have too much skin in our game to identify lines that may have been crossed - particularly since most of them would be standing on the same side of that line as TSC.

I certainly agree that a rugby standoff is less likely that the basketball one. Most of the GPS old boys in the 40 plus age bracket don't really get beyond rugby, rowing and cricket, so a basketball dispute doesn't mean the end of civilisation as they know it.

Notwithstanding past events, there seems to have been a subtle change in the balance of the GPS heads though. I get the impression that Ross Tarlington is far more likely to sympathise with the Shore, Grammar, Riverview position that the Scots one and notwithstanding past practices I wouldn't count Joeys out if push came to shove. Who know where Dr Hawkes stands? That only leaves High and Newington. High can only compete with Scots in basketball and rifle shooting. Newington will take a few years to get over the 2012/13 1st XV recruiting process so they can't take part in any action against Scots in the foreseeable future.

I don't think Dr Lambert is out of the woods yet. Even if only Shore and Riverview push it, that leaves an unviable 4 team competition in 1sts and 2nds rugby. Hardly world domination.

“The 5” have pulled the trigger and there is no going back.

I anticipate that they thought that TSC would take the rebuke and come to heel with less complications than are being experienced. That TSC has continued to deny any wrongdoing is an outcome for which I wonder if “the 5” have a genuine contingency.

To not persist and not include winter sports in the scholarship boycott will be akin to blinking in a game of chicken, and we all know - he who blinks first loses.

I think there's sense in what you say.
However, it is possible that the very narrow nature of the complaint, relating only to basketball, was a deliberate choice.
The complaining schools can say that there is insufficient evidence in relation to the other sports.
Funnily enough I had non GPS parents pointing out boys said to be at SJC on a free rugby ride just this week.
It never ends.
