School sporting scholarships/recruitment

If any school in any quality schoolboy comp denies it gives scholarships for talented sportsmen it is kidding itself

As ever the devil is in the detail.
Is your premise that to win a premiership in any sport in, say, CAS you have to be giving scholarships based on sporting prowess.

I'm not saying its a must or that it's right, but it has happend for years. I think it happens across the board.

So with no evidence whatsoever, you're happy to support the comments (untrue) that are obviously hurtful and detrimental to school kids who have worked hard to be as good as they are.

Go back over the 234 pages of this thread and see how many posts that you find that criticise either the boys or their parents for accepting scholarships or bursaries. I'd be very very surprised if you found 1 out of 4,679. The criticism is of THE SCHOOL/S and its/their HEADMASTER/S. That is where the fault/blame lies.

If you think that "good coaching" and "hard training" alone will deliver 1sts/A team scores of 60-100 point victories, then you will believe anything.

I'm not disputing that the teams are (a) well-coached and (b) train hard, what I'm saying is that the school has recruited a number of talented athletes/sportsmen for the purpose of winning/dominating a school sporting competition/s.

Where is the outrage about the one sided scoreline in Joeys 10th XV vs Scots 7th XV?

That result shouldn't happen either, but is it seriously suggested that Joeys offered 10th XV rugby players bursaries so that they could beat a 7th XV.

With respect, you're being disengenuous equating that with 1st XV results.

Clearly the TSC 7ths should play a lower SJC next time or pick up a fixture with a CAS or ISA school. No junior player should be beaten by that much.

JK, if you can be bothered, a trawl through these umpteen pages will reveal that we've done this dance from Scots apologists on numerous occasions. If you're so well acquainted with the ones that have been there since year 7 I strongly suspect that you're equally familiar with those Johnny Come Latelys & the basis upon which they're there.

No one should have to name the kids involved because it's not their fault that the world domination ethos has prevailed.

It reminds me of the TSC supporters who said time and again that they had been involved since year 7 and that there was no chance that any boys in the various sports were on any form of sporting scholarship/bursary. Then came the admission of 61 "talented sportsmen" on bursaries and acknowledgement of "irregularities in the enrolment process".

I may have been guilty a while back, but I am over it now
my tongue isn't even bleeding tonight.
though my cheeks are fairly bruised after reading the "no evidence" comments
(i have learnt to take my teeth out before reading this thread)

If we are honest to ourselves, the Scots program has improved out of sight. I can't understand why the outrage when Scots start performing well - I don't remember Scots complaining in this way when they used to get thrashed year after year by Joeys et al. Scholarships can't even be brought into this one - all the stars (Crichton, Porter, Strang, Smith, Prindival etc) have been at TSC since Year 7.

Hard work in training and boys who have spent 5 years in a well-thought out rugby program is now paying off.

Are you suggesting we teach our boys to give up whenever someone is better than us? Or just kick them out because we can't be bothered lifting the standard. Pretty disappointing Green and Gold posters; Surely its time to reward success rather than find excuses.
You're new to this shit, aren't you Jim?????

Some of us are.
What is the program you speak of? What are its constituent parts?

I'd believe that 5 years ago, 2009, would be the year that the current Director of Rugby at Scots, Marcus Blackburn, was appointed and that would have been the year that the current crop of year 12's would have started year 7 at Scots. To be fair, I think the difference between Scots and the other schools (bar joeys) is that they have a rugby program that aims at delivering gradual player skill development spread over 5 years from high level coaching techniques, methods and advice, so that when they reach opens they already are familiar with the concepts that the 1 and 2's coaches implement to execute the game plans/ patterns of play you are seeing today. Probably explains why they are so well drilled and technically strong. 5 years worth of work, and even if 8 players are believed to be on scholarships, they're still 7 more organic players ( excluding any players in the 2's that would be homegrown) that are very good rugby players. Safe to say its bearing its fruit, and no I am not affiliated with Scots in anyway, just an observor.

Dear Chop,

Thank you for answering little Jimmy Kelly's letter to the blog. Could you ask Jim the following
A; Why would be surprised when the head of the school has already admitted to the "Anomalies and Irregularities" that we chortle so much about? Discuss with Jim/Chop.
B; 5 years? Ask the mum who proudly spruiks that her boy is there on a 100% scholarship for Rugby. He has only been there for 2. Ask the boys at Easts and Randwick that have left the school and are playing Colts now Chop/Jim. They will tell you that 5 years isn't so much the time line for Messr Blackburn. Again, discuss with Jim/Chop and bother to look before for young men that went from Northern Beaches schools and other Colleges to Bellevue Hill.

Oh, and as a casual observer, why the inside knowledge (supposedly) and passion being displayed?
I have nothing to do with SJC and IS has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with Easts OR SGS.

I suggest Chop/JIm that you take your time, go back to Page 1 and start reading.
Let me know when you have finished please ;)

All the knowledge I have has simply come from mainly reading various forums on this website and just doing a little bit of homework every now and then out of curiosity over the last 2 years. This includes simply reading up on the rugby page of scots, such as reading the coach bios and what they had to say etc, and also seeing some of the rugby being played by the schools as well as any video of the games occasionally if I have time. By the way, have you not seen that video of the battle of the hill made by TSC? I found it here and it can give you an idea of what I was trying to say

Now, im not here looking for a fight, just giving my thoughts on the program from what I have concluded from my reading and viewings to IS who was asking about why the last 5 years would matter. Im fully in favour of schools only fielding organic teams and not superstar teams stacked with recent arrivals solely for the purpose of a premiership. It ruins it for everyone and you will see what I mean when this much fancied organic riverview year group that were unbeaten through to 16's ( i think) lose out to a Scots team that would have been very different to the ones they played in their earlier years. I wasnt happy how Newington bullied more natural teams such as Shore last year with a squad of nearly 14 rugby bursary assisted players.

At the end of the day, I would like to see a comp whereby winners are determined by the natural abilities of various age groups and those who have worked the hardest to improve their standard and be competitive, not for the natural order to be thrown off course due to the greed and selfishness of other schools looking for something to add to their marketing.

By the way, my passion just comes from my shared love of rugby.

All this talk of superior "programs" amuses me greatly.
Where are the posters from the past two years that were lauding the New program?
Funny how the wheels fell off, when 2/3 of the imported cattle left.
Anyone who runs a program that recruits kids 5 or 6 years in advance,is admitting he can't really make that much of a difference.
