SARU accuses NZ, Australia of vendetta

Reuters

South African Rugby president Oregan Hoskins claims Peter de Villiers' misconduct hearing this week is nothing more than New Zealand and Australia launching a vendetta against the union.

Hoskins told South Africa's Cape Argus newspaper that the SANZAR disciplinary hearing, to be held in Cape Town on Friday, was "a declaration of war by Australia and New Zealand against South Africa".

De Villiers will front up over controversial comments he made on Australia's Fox Sport's rugby club programme, when, on July 21, he said: "I've got my own observations about the last two Tests, and maybe I can't say it in public.

"But we do have a World Cup in New Zealand next year and maybe it was the right thing for them to win the games so they can attract more people to the games next year."

The comments were directed at Irish referees Alan Lewis and Alain Rolland, after South Africa's two Test losses to New Zealand in Auckland and Wellington.

"We are right behind Peter and will defend him to the hilt," Hoskins said.

As long as they don't cotton on to other ANZAC conspiracies such as when we topped JFK and staged the moon landing. Be carful, we are out to get you.

If PDV is representative of the political appointments taking place in SA then no wonder so many saffas are jumping ship to Aus.

Does anyone actually have a quote of Hoskins dropping the term "vendetta"? Because in his quote he simply says he will stick behind PdV, which seems fair enough.

I still honestly believe that there is a possibility that in this case PdV's comments were taken at least slightly out of context.

Have you seen the interview? It is pretty clear, but I'm sure he will use the 'that isn't what I meant' excuse.

The secret in political speak is to use lots and lots of words contradicting yourself here and there. Then when you are called on the interview you can selectively quote one part to disprove the part you were called on.

Paddy OBriens chopping and changing of refs also add some fuel on this one. Maybe a bit of truth here. :nta: You cheating bastards. ;D

Also, "it's been taken out of context", when you don't have a leg to stand on

Hoskins has a big egg on his head and the yolk is oozing down his face.

The petulance of Saru president Oregan Hoskins’ ‘declaration of war’ offering was exposed in Cobus Wessels’ axing, writes RYAN VREDE.

Wessels was stood down as an official for the Tri-Nations Test between New Zealand and Australia on Saturday after it was found that he had incorrectly reported Wallabies wing Drew Mitchell for a late tackle on Richie McCaw when the sides met in Melbourne last week.

Mitchell was incredulous at his ejection after Wessels had recommended it to referee Craig Joubert, and television footage later showed that he was justifiably miffed. He later earned a second yellow and was red carded.

IRB referees boss Paddy O’Brien on Wednesday admitted that the decision to sin-bin Mitchell for a late tackle on Richie McCaw was incorrect.

‘If anything, it’s lucky to be a penalty,’ O’Brien said, ‘…there’s no way it’s a yellow card offence.

‘As a result of that, with the second yellow, Australia went without a player for 30 minutes and that just shouldn’t have happened.’

Wessels admitted to the error. This on the day when Hoskins said Sanzar’s judicial hearing, set for Friday, into Springbok coach Peter de Villiers’ insinuations on Fox Sports’ The Rugby Club that referees had favoured New Zealand was ‘a declaration of war’ from New Zealand and Australia.

Hoskins stressed, ‘We are right behind him [De Villiers] and will defend him to the hilt.’

Hoskins is deluded if he thinks there is any justifiable defence for this ludicrous offering De Villiers made on the show: ‘I’ve got my own observations about the last two tests, and maybe I can’t say it in public, but we do have a World Cup in New Zealand next year and maybe it was the right thing for them to win the games so they can attract more people to the games next year.’

Saru issued a press release shortly thereafter stating that his words had been misinterpreted. That was an insult to the intelligence of the global rugby fraternity; particularly the South Africans who were embarrassed by those rubbish ramblings. A South Africa officer is hearing the case. Don’t be surprised if De Villiers is slapped on the wrist and told to hold his tongue in future.

The Springboks had three players cited and suspended, all justifiably, for various forms of foul play on their Australasian tour. The view of the Springboks is that foul or unlawful play, particularly at the breakdown, from Kiwi and Aussie players was overlooked.

This has vexed Hoskins. But his public emotional outburst is unbecoming of a president of an elite rugby nation. It perpetuates the growing perception that we are a nation of sore losers, fuels the fury of those who share his unfounded belief of a conspiracy to undermine the Springboks, and serves only to further strain the relationship in the southern hemisphere triumvirate.

Those ties have gradually been unravelling. It intensified when the Australasian Alliance (that’s what it is) bullying South Africa into accepting an expanded Super 15 format that suited them, and one that will compromise the Currie Cup. This despite South Africa being the major contributor to Sanzar’s coffers. Various incidents since have seen the relationship degenerate to the point where the effectiveness of the body is in question.

Hoskins seems to have been infected with De Villiers’ victim mentality, for which the Bok coach was ridiculed on their Australasian tour. His views would have been better expressed in private, were an amiable solution could have been sought.

Hoskins’ ill-considered rant has undoubtedly done more harm than good – in the manner most referees will view and officiate the Springboks, and the manner in which disciplinary issues will be dealt with in future by Australasian Sanzar officials.

For that he must accept responsibility.

Thought that SANZAR had returned to relative stability. After reading that I am not so sure, think it is still a pretty fragile alliance. As much as we can laugh, it is an issue that the ARU need to treat with a lot of care, as it could easily blow up in their faces.

Keo is a shit-stirrer of note, though often gets damn good intel. Not sure about RYAN VREDE who wrote that article for Keo.
