Whilst Rugby 7's doesnt necessarily appeal to the traditional rugby fan, it does appeal to the non-rugby fans since it is a easy concept to understand, fast paced and entertaining. Considering rugby unions complete lack of saturation in the Australian Market, something like 7's rugby is perfect to expand the game into non-traditional areas like Vic, SA and WA.

So you think those who don't watch the 15 man game will suddenly start going to provincial 7s games? The crowds in the MARC were small in Melbourne if memory serves. Whilst a couple of thousand will turn up early in a comp I think you'll see few if any repeat visitors. Good night out. Couple of beers. Been there once and done that.

You can't compare you idea to Adelaide 7s, which is an international tournament.

The ARU is hanging the future of Australian rugby on the S15 expansion and that's that.
im pretty sure what i said was fairly easy to understand

when did i ever say those who dont watch the 15 man game will suddenly start going to provincial 7's games????

I said 7's is another product which could help spread rugby union, especially into non-traditional rugby areas since the rules are easier and there are various past examples where the non-rugby fraternity are willing to turn up in numbers.

jeez mate, lets try and have a mature discussion without turning it petty alright

Meanwhile, O'Neill suggested Super rugby, shown exclusively on Fox Sports, would receive some form of exposure on free-to-air television when the new broadcast agreement was announced in the next few weeks.

So what can we make of that snippet?
I cant imagine it will be anything drastic, at very best it will mean 1 game show live every week, however the more plausible option is that rights to replay the games will be onsold to One

"Receive some form of exposure" doesn't provide much hope I reckon - no chance of a live game, maybe a delayed game a week one One, but most likely something like a half hour S14 wrap up each week similar to what used to be on Channel 7 a few years ago.

it would be great if they could produce an hour show similar to what sbs shows for the premier league soccer. a couple of 15/20 minute packages of two games plus 15 minutes of highlights from the other games and major talking points. It would be far better than nothing.

i dont have and have never had foxtel/austar. i have only ever watched maybe 5 full super 14 matches because of this. i attribute the comparitively low popularity of rugby union in australia to the extremely low amount of free to air exposure that rugby has. i would be pleased with waratahjesus' above suggestion or even delayed broadcast of a super 14 game from every round. thats my kent brockman-esque "two cents worth"

Lions tour the carrot for Nine TV deal
GREG GROWDEN
March 18, 2010

The 2013 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia is being used as a lure to convince the Nine Network into becoming both the free-to-air rugby league and rugby union channel.

The details of the new SANZAR broadcasting deal with News Corporation for 2011-15 was expected to be announced this week, but will be delayed for up to a month due to negotiations with Australian free-to-air networks. While the pay-TV operator Foxtel will remain the rights holder for both Super rugby and the Test matches involving the Wallabies, the Premier Media Group – which runs the Fox Sports network and is on-selling the free-to-air rights – is negotiating with two free-to-air networks, understood to be Channel Seven and Nine. It is believed the Ten Network is no longer interested in the free-to-air rights for Tri Nations matches and home Tests involving the Wallabies. The Herald has been told Nine

Network executives were recently approached in a bid to convince them to be the home station of both rugby codes. It has received little publicity, but the Nine Network has secured the rights to the next two rugby World Cups, in 2011 and 2015. This has prompted those involved in the SANZAR broadcasting negotiations to stress the advantages of being in charge of the free-to-air rugby content in between those tournaments, as it will involve a three-Test British and Irish Lions tour of Australia, in mid-2013.

I think that you make an extremely valid point, DPK. The other codes have an abundance of high standard games available on free-to-air. As far as Super Rugby is concerned the only thing available to the non-Pay TV subscriber is to watch games in a pub.

The situation is compounded by the outrageous prices charged - in Sydney at least - for entry to games. The effect of this is that many genuine rugby supporters cannot afford to attend, while the young well-heeled view attendance as conspicuous consumption, somewhere to be seen and a meeting point with their mates where they can catch up on the latest gossip before going on to their late night social activities.

The atmosphere at the SFS is profoundly depressing for the true rugby follower with a large proportion of those in attendance taking little notice of what is occurring on the field.

Good points Brucie - I thought it was just me.

The rugby played by the Tahs before last Saturday hasn't helped recently. Every game last year was a dud even when we won and the one at Homebush was a fizzer at the ground too. It wasn't great for much of the time under Link either.

Let's hope the Tahs can play better footie on a consistent basis so the atmosphere can change. It was better yonks ago when we weren't that competitive.

The non-rugby people will still show up for a drink and the league fans in the members will always be insufferable.

The Tahs must have the lowest index of crowd advantage of any team in the competition. Our House? My arse.

But I digress - Channel 9 showing rugby FTA will be a big boost for our sport. Let's all hope that it goes through.

Our House? My arse.

You weren't by any chance a creative genius in an advertising agency in an earlier life, Lee?

"Our House? My arse." What a marvellous - and marvellously apt - slogan! And its brilliance is enhanced by the fact that it recalls and builds on the earlier slogan.

If I were you I'd be onto Jim L'Estrange sharpish and claim credit for the idea. Huge "Our House? My arse." banners at each entrance and/or spraypainted in giant letters on the field! Think of the publicity it would generate. The media has given up on rugby big time but I'll bet we'd be the lead story on every TV news bulletin the next night. I can see the story going global, although the Yanks wouldn't understand what an "arse" is.

But if Jim feels the idea would be too radical, you could get "Our House? My arse." printed on a couple of thousand t-shirts and wait until the 'Tahs turn on one of their "let's kick the shit out of the ball" games. Then as the disconsolate punters trudge out the gates you could flog the t-shirts to them. I'll bet you'd be knocked over in the rush.

Sheer bloody brilliance, Lee.

No, I was a broken down accountant with more debits than credits.

Last year I was thinking more of the American NFL fans who were so embarrassed by their team that they wore paper bags over their heads to games. New Orleans Saints??

Our House was always a dodgy campaign. As Chris Handy pointed out with typical eloquence: the Tahs are f******g renters.

they should introduce those huge banners the AFL guys run through. On the one side, the players run through, it'd say "OUR HOUSE" on the other side, where the players would run out of it would say "MY ARSE" and have a massive picture of an arse, out of which the players would run.

What are the chances of playing rugby at a lower capacity ground?

In my limited knowledge, only one really springs to mind and thats Concord Oval. Before someone jumps on and says its too small, Austadiums.com claims it has a 20,000 seat capacity. Have the Tah's broken the 20,000 mark this year? Obviously, the issue of facilities not being up to the level of the bigger grounds and the issue of transport difficulties are both potential dealbreakers , but does anyone else think this is a viable option?

How about "Let's roll these C*nts" on the back? Seems to me it will have more impact.

I think the GGR T Shirt needs redesign :)
