Player of Year finalists named, final voting opens
October 17, 2012
The ten finalists for the prestigious SARU Rugby Player of the Year 2012 have been finalised, following a new public consultation process in conjunction with the votes of rugby media.

The rugby public nominated and voted for players on the Springboks’ Facebook page and will now have a decisive say in determining which of the ten top-rated players will be crowned on 1 November, when the SARU Rugby Player of the Year Awards Function is held in Cape Town.

The public are urged to use this platform again and vote for the player they feel has achieved most in the 2012 South African rugby season. Voting closes on Wednesday, 24 October at noon.

The ten finalists (in alphabetical order) are: Willem Alberts, Keegan Daniel, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Eben Etzebeth, Bryan Habana, Elton Jantjies, Siya Kolisi, Pat Lambie and JP Pietersen.

Voting for other categories in the annual showpiece has now closed and SARU would like to thank the fans who participated in this venture. Public participation in the naming of winners in six categories was used for the first time this year.

Is Johan Goosen not included due to the very limited number of games he played before he was injured?

He is not listed, probably not enough matches. Myself picked Etsebeth, one year back and he havent had a CC cap a massive achievement for the youngster. For a 20 year old tight fiver to play like he do, he sure deserves this in my books.

Was surprised not to see Pienaar on the list until I read it was for the SA Rugby season so he's probably excluded due to playing for Ulster.

Player I'm most impressed with this year is JP Pietersen as he was so improved this year compared to other years where he was the guy on the other wing to Brian Habana. He's added a lot more to his game and showed he can do a really good job when asked to move into the centres too.

Etzebeth is the other one that stands out as he's had an amazing year. Brian Hanbana was great in TRC but not so much in S15.

.

JP was close to best player in the entire S15. His injury IMO was very costly to the Boks not only was his play a loss when in such good form but it forced their best halfback to play on the wing
