Do SA fans really rate Burger better than Brussow?

Not me, I want them both with Alberts. Brussouw havent played much rugby and is on the come back. Schalkie also miss a few but will play non stop if he dont get injured.

Schalkies way of play is much better compare to Brussouw with the new rules. Francois Louw plays like Brussouw.

I'm a big fan of FLouw, but surely if Juan Smith if fit, the best backrow would be Brussow, Smith and Alberts? We'd obviously never see it as Spies seemingly as that position on lockdown.

I forgot about Juan. I'll have him in Alberts place, they play the same way. Schalkie gives you a bit of Brussouw and a bit of Juan/Willem and as a combo those three will be the best. Only my view but they are all four excellent and Scahlkie from the bench as impact will also probably the best for his versatility. He can pack down in 8 , Alberts is a specialised 8.

Brussow showed that he needs little game time to get back in the swing.

I would love to see Schalk at 8. He has all the skills.

Brussow / Schalk / Juan with Alberts on the bench

Else Brussow / Alberts / Schalk

But Spies will play at 8 no matter what. God he has been absolutely zero value piss poor to the extreme.

Well he plays 7 most the time but I think you mean of all of them he is the most specialised at 8 having played there more.

Anyone else noticed how often Brussow packs at 8 on defense for the Cheetahs?

O reckon defenseive scrums with Schalk on the openside and Brussow running from 8 could be pretty potent.

Paarl, what do you know about the newer SA refs (bolded) in the panal? Any of them any good? I have Rasivhenga a bit in the IRB 7s, any of the others up to it? I see Marius Jonker's brother is in the group below. Is he a good ref that just needs some more seasoning?

They are all good ones specially Berry & Immelman. I am just glad to see LeGoete gone, he was an imbarrasment.

Watson do a great job bringing young refs to the party. I know at Paarl Gym (Versveld) put in a big effort in getting young schoolboy laaities to the ref option these days. SA have the best structures and competitions to bring them through.

786 new referees in SA
2011-12-08 10:22Email | Print

Brenden Nel - SuperSport

Johannesburg - South Africa’s rugby refereeing recruitment drive has paid dividends, with the sport recruiting almost 800 new referees countrywide during 2011.

Earlier this year, Director of referees Andre Watson launched the campaign to recruit new referees after surveys found dwindling numbers in the refereeing ranks with potentially catastrophic results for the game as a whole. The figures released on the SA Referee website boast 786 new referees for the country.

Interestingly Western Province recruited by far the most referees in the country, with 159 candidates knocking on their door. They were followed by the Free State with 113, while the Blue Bulls, Boland, Golden Lions and Griquas came close to 90 new referees each.

Even the Griffons, with one of the smallest bases in the country, managed to recruit one referee.

Watson was pleased with the outcome of the recruitment drive but urged referee societies to look for more potential whistleblowers for the sport.

"It is very encouraging and the hope is expressed that each society does its utmost to ‘capture’ as many of these enquiries as possible in order for us all to grow and redress the dire shortage of referees in the country,” Watson told the SA Referees official website.

"Each society is still encouraged and respectfully requested to continue its 'in house' recruitment and not rely on the National campaign’s enquiries only.”

Watson also stressed the importance of race and gender transformation.
