NSW allows second-rower Hendrik Roodt to return home to South Africa

NSW Waratahs have released South African second-rower Hendrik Roodt from the second year of his Super rugby contract to allow him to return to the republic to play for the Cheetahs.

A former back-up second-rower at the Bulls and an Emerging Springbok, Roodt was recruited by the Waratahs as a development foreign player.

But Roodt only played 10 minutes in the 27-6 loss to the Stormers in the second round before sustaining an ankle injury which sidelined him for eight weeks.

"Hendrik had an offer from the Cheetahs and we released him," Waratahs coach Chris Hickey said.

The Waratahs are close to signing Brumbies backrower Sitaleki Timani.
It appears so and we get an upgrade

Thank fark for that. Has he gone straight away? If so, hopefully Gordon can fill his spot in the firsts with a forward who can actually hit the rucks and use his size appropriately. This is truly a good day and hopefully the turnaround that Gordon need to kickstart their season.

Roodt = biggest bum signing ever by NSW?

God knows he looked useless for the ten minutes I saw him.

Some scout somehwere should get fired.

Lol a mate of mine was joking that the Waratahs might have got him and Flip vd Merwe mixed up. Imagine that. Scout at Loftus asks someone "Who is that big young lock tearing up the place." Boertjie who is wise to the Aussie accent - "Oh that it's uhm Flip, no uhm Hendrik, Hendrik Roodt. He'll be the next lock in Bok colors."

Next morning while at Maccas scoffing his fourth Big Mac for breakfast, Roodt's phone rings....he can't believe his ears after struggling for two minutes to free his phone from very tight jean pockets. He gets so excited that he orders another four Big Macs and doesn't eat the kethcup but snorts it.

Understandable though. I mean "Flip" vs "Hendrik" and "van der Merwe" vs "Roodt". Give or take the odd stray vowel it's much the same. ;)

Should we have taken the McKenzie approach to young Dud: a player needs a good 18 months of physical preparation to get the strength and fitness needed to play Super rugby? He can't be a compete dud if he played for the Emerging Springboks.

If Douglas continues his recent development, Caldwell returns refreshed from injury (he hasn't had a taxing year) and young Peterson comes through the Tahs' second-row stocks look good. Oh, and Jowitt turns up. Anyone know anything about Timani?

Lindo with those stocks there's no point filling the foreign player spot with a lock that is questionable at best.

So this opens up the spot of overseas players who will be eligible for the Wallabies. Right? What position should the Tahs look to fill? Maybe a young 8 who carries well and in principle never sidesteps?

ouch. grant to japan? i know the pretorius experiment didn't work out at all, but i would have thought the western force big wigs would have given their first borns for him.

It's only six months. He will be back for Super 15 and is still under contract from what I know.

Paarl, what is the status of his Stormers contract?

Timani isn't rated by the Brumbies anymore who released him, but he has been the form lock in the Sydney Club Comp with Southern Districts

The majority of his Super 14 game time has been at 6. Possibly because they think he plays too loose to play in the 2nd row because it CERTAINLY is NOT a size issue. The man is a beast and could really be anything.
