Free State dominate SA Schools
Sat, 03 Jul 2010 15:18

Free State - and Grey College - flyhalf Johan Goosen has been named in the 2010 SA Schools team

Free State - unsurprisingly - dominated the South African Schools team which was announced at the end of the Craven Week in Welkom on Saturday afternoon.

The team will be captained by the Free State captain William Small-Smith and includes 11 players that competed in the final game between Free State and WP.

There is only one player back from last year's SA Schools side - Andile Jho, the inside centre in the disappointing Border side.

Small-Smith will partner Jho in the midfield.

Jho, Craig Barry, Small-Smith and Johan Goosen were in last year's South African Under-18 side which is chosen by different selectors.

The back three include the exciting Western Province duo of fullback Craig Barry and Jean-Paul Lewis.

They will be joined by Boland speedster Leroy Bitterhout, who scored a hat trick of tries during his side's 49-23 victory over Kwazulu Natal on Saturday.

Free State Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen, who scored 22 points during his side's victory over WP, was also named in the team.

Goosen was also a member of SARU's Under-18 High Performance squad in 2009.

There are six players from Grey College in the side, four from Paul Roos and three from Affies.

The South African Schools team for 2010: 15 Craig Barry (Paul Roos, Western Province), 14 Jean-Paul Lewis (Paul Roos, Western Province), 13 William Small-Smith (Grey College, Free State - captain), 12 Andile Jho (Dale, Border), 11 Leroy Bitterhout (Klein Nederburg, Boland), 10 Johan Goosen (Grey College, Free State), 9 Rudi van Rooyen (Affies, Blue Bulls), 8 Nardus van der Walt (Affies, Blue Bulls), 7 Sikhumbuzo Notshe (Wynberg Boys' High, Western Province), 6 Khaya Majola (Westville, KwaZulu Natal), 5 Ruan Botha (Jeugland, Valke), 4 Ruan Venter (Monument, Golden Lions), 3 Allan Dell (Queen's, Border), 2 Jason Thomas (Muir, Eastern Province), 1 Steven Kitshoff (Paul Roos, Western Province).
Replacements: 16 Anrich Bitzi (Grey College, Free State), 17 Neethling Fouché (Grey College, Free State), 18 Schalk van Heerden (Affies, Blue Bulls), 19 Wiaan Liebenberg (Drostdy, Boland), 20 Kevin Luiters (Grey College, Free State), 21 Paul Jordaan (Grey College, Free State), 22 Tshotsho Mbovane (Paul Roos, Western Province).

Coaches: AJ Mercuur (Boland), Janse van der Ryst (Griquas Country Districts)

Not sure who they play but their are a 4 Nations U18 tournament just around the corner and the SA Schools team will only be a part of the SA High Performance sqaud which will be picked from SA Schools, SA Academy and other U18 players not in school.

High Performance Squad to be named
Wed, 30 Jun 2010 16:24

A South African Rugby Union High Performance Workshop took place at the 2010 Craven Week in Welkom

SARU will announce a 32-man Under-18 High Performance Squad at the conclusion of the 2010 Craven Week tournament in Welkom that will compete in international friendlies against France, England and a Namibian Invitational side.

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) will announce a 32-man Under-18 High Performance Squad at the conclusion of the 2010 Craven Week tournament in Welkom that will compete in international friendlies against France, England and a Namibian Invitational side.

The squad that will be selected from players who have excelled in the Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week, and the recently concluded Under-18 Academy Week, will assemble in Cape Town on Monday, July 12 to prepare for the three internationals which forms part of SARU's Elite Player Development Programme.

"Our aims are to give Under-18 players some international exposure," said SARU High Performance Manager Herman Masimla.

"Only when guys compete will we know who the possible players are that could make it on the international stage. Hopefully, there will be guys that have attended this workshop who will one day represent the SA Under-20 team, Springbok Sevens side or ultimately play for the Springboks.

"We identified that the lack of international competition for our juniors in comparison with our overseas competitors could be one of our weaknesses. The European nations compete in an Under-20 Six Nations competition for example."

Competing teams at the Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week in Welkom participated in a SARU High Performance Workshop in Welkom which was hosted by SARU's High Performance Department. SA Sevens coach Paul Treu, SA Under-20 coach Eric Sauls and national selectors Peter Jooste, Ian McIntosh and Marais Bester (SA Sevens) were all in attendance.

Each player received a DVD which included an all-year conditioning programme and electronic software to rate himself against the country's best players in his age group. The training programme and software were provided by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa.

Players had the opportunity to chat and interact with SARU's High Performance delegation and also had the chance to interact with the different teams competing at the Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week in Welkom.

South Africa Under-18 International fixtures:
Friday, July 16: SA v France - East London
Tuesday, July 20: SA v Namibia - George
Friday, July 23: SA v England - Port Elizabeth
We had England last year and lost heavily but then the England and French teams had played a 6 Nations tournament at the start of the year and their age group year is from 1 September while SA U18s is from 1 January. This will be the first time our lot will play in a team together so a big differense to compare to them.

Daai website is van die hemels! Haha... Been looking for something like it for so so long, I'm a Rondebosch supporter but had no way to watch the games.
Nice , my small kid is in Klein Gim (Paarl Gym Prymary) and the Gimmies like Rondebosch Bossies , probably the most of the Cape Town Soutie schools. We have this yearly sleep over weekend of sport going with them, hockey and road running on the friday and rugby on the saturday. Think it is great for the kids, city kids learning in Paarl to throw tol and the country Paarl kids learning to chase chicks from the city lot. Making good friends but once they enter the pitch , its war zone.

Yeah that kind of vibe is great. So your kid will be a Gimmie boytjie alongside greats such as Schalla? Amazing the concentration of rugby talent and development in Paarl.

Ja thats my LaatLammetjie, he is in a great age group, now U12(4 players in WP squad) and playing with the U13s (three in Careven Week and 4 in WP XV) also a great sporting group. Thats KleinGim, my elder two kids already out of school and also x Gimmies. The oldest one was one of Schalla sotte, standard 6 or grade 8 as they call it nowadays when he was in Matrix. He was a year ahead od Dewaldt Duvenhage and we know them well.

Inter Schools coming up the last week of July , the next big thing around town. Gimmies is doing great this season and only this big one to stay unbeaten in the Western Cape.

That's awesome. Any idea how many hours per week of rugby training do they have their 1st XV doing? Yeah I saw Gim were undefeated, pretty amazing considering Bishops, Boishaai and Paul Roos are all in the Cape.

The first XV trains twice a day (except weekends and fridays), early morning gym, afternoon usual training. We are in a school holiday at the moment and will only start next week teusday. The U13 A kiddies practises started last week to get them in shape. Prymary school is mostly Paarl kids, High School is 70% boarding school, so they aint here.

Where do most of the boarders come from then? The vast majority are Afrikaans surely?

Paarl Gym is a afrikaans school, the likes of Pannevis and Ds du Toit (Totius dad) put afrikaans on paper in KleinGym. Totius was born in the schools current computor room.

Most come from all over the country and also a lot of Namibian pupils. Mostly the granny was there, followed by the dad and the current kid over generations. They have a slogo going at Gym "Eenmaal n Gimmie, altyd 'n Gimmie" and it works like that. Schalkies dad and mum was Gimmies as a example, know his gran dad from his mum side was actually the principle at WA Joubert prymary, ons of Gim's feeder schools and also were Ruaan Smith was schooled.
