How will this pan out?
Most of the teams have their strongest team sorted now, and most of their reserves as well.

For me, I think:

Tahs
Reds
Force
Brumbies
Rebels

I think the Tahs have a team that could win the whole comp, if their chips fall in the right places. They have a front row that can match anyone. With Vickerman coming back, they have a lock who has been around the block, and one of the most exciting up and coming locks in Douglas. Their backrow boasts stregths in all three positions, and will most likely see a player of Mowens capabilities benced. the halves are excellent and wouldnt look out of place in gold. The outside backs are quick and I feel Mitchell and Beale are pushing for selection in a world XV. They might not see much ball however, especially if a centres combo of Cross and Carter is used. And that is their weakness. Very good defensively, but offers nothing in attack.

The Reds have a weakness at 7 at the moment, but that is about it for the starting XV. Depth wise they do worry me a little. A few injuries especially in the forwards and they are exposed. And depth will be important this season. Losing Weeks was big, but Slipper has come along in leaps and bounds. While being a better loosehead, I think he will be fine at tighthead this year. Link seems to have the team buzzing, and I really hope that the young team can play like they did last year. But that will be an ask. Coopers defence will be an issue, but his combination with Genia will really excite the fast and skillful backline. Watch for them to play a running game similar to last year. The rule changes really suit the Reds I think.

Force, providing they dont have a repeat of this years injuries, have a strong forward line, and some decent backs. But really lack decent depth so will struggle through the length of the season. They have a front row, that while unspectacular, is serviceable. Sharpe has been one of the best locks going around the last 2 years, and will provide good guidance to his partner, who I assume will be either Hocking or Wykes (one really needs to step up this coming year). The backrow is oozing class, and we will find a current Wallaby benched - my guess is Brown. They have made some decent aquisitions in the backs, with Ripia plugging the hole at 10, and should combine well with JOC (James O'Connor). Should Ripia go down, they will be in trouble, with little backup at 10. Smith strengthens the wings, and if Shepherd can stay fit will be covered at 15 as well. Inman had a great Shute Shield and this might be the year where he stakes a claim for higher honours.

The Brumbies have some talent but cant seem to do much with it. Giteau is not playing well and will take a lot to turn him around. AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is their main back I think, the rest are currently jouneymen (To'omua will be good, but he is still young, and not counting Giteau) . And they have lost Smith and Mortlock. Plus they will be playing Alexander at loosehead, and that worked well for them this year didnt it. Ma'afu has learned a lot from his time at the Wallabies and should offer quite a lot for the Brumbies. Chisholm, while not performing at international level is always very capable at super rugby, and he will be partnered with Hand or Kimlin who are both capable. The back row is an issue. Hoiles had a great season last year, and I hope he continues it. Elsom is also a great player, and certainly world class. But at 7 they will either have Salvi, Hooper or Fa'ainga. The latter two are very inexperienced and Salvi is a journeyman.

The Rebels, while I hope they do well, dont have the players or combinations to really mount any sort of challenge. They will be the easy beats I fear. The forwards seem to be made up of players past their prime or players from other franchises who have moved for game time. The exception being Delve, who I am really looking forward to seeing. In the backs, they have picked up a few great young players such as Kingi, but in the outside backs seem to have gone for journeymen - Gerrard, Huxley, Hilgendorf, Betham, etc. Cipriani is a real mystery to most. Will he settle and play rugby, or will he have his mind elsewhere. And how will he go settling into Super rugby? He is a real unknown in this team. There is some experience there in Mortlock and Cordingley. But the million dollar question is will Mortlock get over his injury and find form? I think most Australians will pray he does, but I fear that he has lost the pace and ability to break tackles that made him the best centre in the world.

I don't agree with your assesmnet of depth of the Reds. The reds have the depth to roll out several different combinations in the tight five and some immensly talented back rowers comming through. Three of our locks are tried and proven that they can play in the back row also.

Tahs have great cattle and I hope that they can sought out a good game plan to exploit it.

Brumbies will be more settled and the inclusion of Larkham as backs coach will serve them well.

The Force have some great players but the team as a whole does not impress me. They wil have an element of the unknown though.

Rebels will be up for it. They ooze experience and have a proven coach. They could be a bit of a dark horse.

It is going to be a great year no doubt.

My heart says the Tahs to win, but the Reds backline does scare me. Brumbies will be third. Daylight fourth, followed by the Force and Rebels.

Tahs won't win nothing if Carter and Cross end up in the centres, we pray for Horne.

The Reds will struggle at scrum time and have no proven quality openside, just kids and Tomeki

Force has little quality depth and Co

The Brumbies didn't work out how to play under the new rules (they kicked away too much ball) and their back three will scare few.

I disagree on the claim that Salvi is a journeyman. He's played for the Brumbies all his life, since school, and has had one year out of the system because he wasnt getting the opportunities. He will also prove to be a better player for his time overseas. Although, it is possible that having played so well in Europe Brumbies supporters will expect a little too much of him - a la Elsom this year.

Nonetheless I'd say the top two teams will be Reds and Brumbies in any order. The Tahs will challenge and certainly have an exciting team, but I just can't see them getting wins in Brisbane or Canberra.

agree with fp, the centres for the Tahs really worry me. In saying that if Daniel Halangahu can step up at 10, then Berrick Barnes slips comfortably into 12 with Ryan Cross at 13 to cover for Rob Horne.

There are definitely question marks for the Reds as to their openside but only through a lack of experience. I am naively confident of Gill, Quirk and Schatz doing the job needed. In saying that, I reckon we may well see a bit of Ben Coridas and/or Beau Robinson there as well.

Brumbies - hopefull and full of bias
Tahs - strong team all round
Reds - good team but to suffer from "second year syndrome"
Force - will pull off some upsets, and lose plenty of games < 7 points... and some > 40
Rebels- can't expect too much

Brumbies for the win. Lealiifano to emulate Beale’10 at fullback. Coleman to burst onto the scene and cement a spot at 10/12 or a left field opt wing ala JOC (James O'Connor). Kimlin to re-emerge. Giteau to play “f*ck it” rugby in his last year and relive some of his old magic. Either Fainga'a or Hooper to stamp their mark at 7.

The Reds have Beau Robinson and Ben Coridas in their academy, both have had Super contracts with the tahs and are specislist 7's so they might have some of the brightest "kids" but there is some experience in the squad

The Reds will struggle at scrum time .

Lets see - Four Wallaby Props, One Wallaby Hooker, Four wallaby Locks + Samo who was a test player who can play backrow/second row. No reason to struggle at scrum time. They lost Byrnes and Weeks and were replaced by Wallabies with heaps of Super Rugby experience - Please explain

You have a starting pack of Daley, Fa'ainga and Slipper. Against the stronger packs that will go backwards. All three, while Wallabies, are a number of years off developing into strong scrummagers. They are mobile, but will get bested. Holmes and Shepherdson are now a long way from the Wallabies.
You have Humphries, Horwill and Simmons as locks. Humphries is getting on, had a terrific season last year, hopefully he can emulate it, but I am not holding my breathe. Horwill has not been fit since god knows when - lets not rely on him just yet. And Simmons is a good up and comer. But he is young and inexperienced.
Oh, and Samo - he is journeyman at best.

Salvi is a bit of a journeyman. He is good but has never taken taht final step. He has played at the Brumbies all his life, but he has never really shown that he will be anything more than a backup super rugby player IMO.

Unfortunately Salvi has played in the same position as players such as George Smith (playing in the same team as George Smith is hard enough), Phil Waugh and now Pocock...

Salvi has played some very good games with the Brumbies and judging by how he's gone with Bath he'll be good for the Brumbies as long as he can limit penalties...

And beside him the Brumbies have two of the best young opensides in the country with Fainga'a and Hooper... Fainga'a was playing better than Salvi in the JiD cup this year...

No one will ever compete with George Smith but that guy was in a freakish league of his own that will possibly never be matched...

Reds are confident and talented now, though losing a few key players they have that momentum

rebels are up and comers, thristy anda talented lot, beating the tahs would mean a lot to them and i think this means they will

Tahs always underperform based on their talent and expectations, don't have the flair and confidence the reds had and dont have the thirst the rebels have, but enough talent to come middle of the pool

Brumbies are still rebuilding i think, and don't have much going for them other than youth, much like the wallabies last year, possible contenders next year

Force, well i don't think many are dispuiting this, still finding it hard to attract a full team of talent, not much confidence at all, a little spark in their forwards, but come short when it gets to their backs, especially with staniforth gone. Lacking some senior leadership and Rebuilding from one of the lowest points in non test rugby.

Only two I rate as scrummagers and there is no decent specialist THP (Slipper & Holmes can both play there, but they appear LHPs playing THP) Daley & Shep - meh. Daley is about as good as Pek Cowan at scrummaging

I expect the Reds front row to struggle when it gets hard.

Four Wallaby Locks? Humphries isn't a Wallaby until he plays in a test

As for Samo, lazy & overweight are the two descriptors I use for him, he will do something wonderful every so often, in between something dumb and something lazy on club form. That is acceptable in Club, but not S15. I would be amazed to see him used regularly unless the Reds are decimated by injury

Back to the Brumbies...

As I've discussed elsewhere:

The Brumbies are loaded with talent in some positions (lock/backrow) and a little light in others (wing)...

Alexander playing LH is not good for anyone but unfortunately the Brumbies failed to recruit a good LH... unless Palmer can successfully make the switch? But I dare say we're going with Alexander/Moore/Ma'afu again... which is not necessarily a bad thing as they dominated most scrums in the comp but will get torn apart again when they come up against the 'Saders...

A big positive for the Brumbies are the large number of excellent young ones that will star for them in the future... unfortunately they won't get much of a chance to shine next year but will great for the team in the long run... many of whom playing in the local comp - Stubbs, White, Coleman etc.

So my heart says:

Brumbies
Waratahs
Reds
Force
Rebels

But my head says:

Waratahs
Brumbies
Reds
Force
Rebels

I think the Brumbies need to work out a game plan that works with their cattle under the new rules. They have the talent, their structure will be interesting

The Brumbies also need to not wait until the last few weeks of the season to try and crawl their way into the finals...

The last two years they've waited until near the end to play their best rugby and then come up against a better team in the final week to miss out...

Hopefully Friend can settle on the right combinations early enough so there is finally some consistency... To'omua should be starting at flyhalf which will be good...

The selection problems come at lock/backrow and in the outside backs... wherever Ashley-Cooper slots in will be key...

Excellent thread. Well done. Can't agree with all your comments but that's neither here nor there as you likely don't agree with all of mine (strangely enough).

Unfortunately Salvi has played in the same position as players such as George Smith

Salvi has played some very good games with the Brumbies and judging by how he's gone with Bath he'll be good for the Brumbies as long as he can limit penalties.

Right on both counts. Salvi's ability was recognised but with Smith there he either got just crumbs of game time or was used in the other back row positions which he was not suited to as much as he was at 7. The danger will be that Friend may paper over the cracks of his blunder of contracting 3 no. 7s by treating him the same way.

Brumbies - hopefull and full of bias

Tell me it aint true BG - tell me it ain't true.

The Reds have Beau Robinson and Ben Coridas in their academy, both have had Super contracts with the tahs and are specislist 7's

Nitpicking I know, but Coridas is not a specialist 7. He's more of a dogsbody flanker who can play both positions, and I've even seen him play 8 at the club level. He didn't get on the park for the Tahs and was injured a lot. The fire in him, one of his best attributes, seem to go out. Fully fit he is a good player; I wish him well. Ditto that for Rat Beau Robinson; no I don't don't know why the Rebels didn't pick him up (or one of the Lams) either.

Three wildcards

- there's often a team that fails to repeat a fabulous performance two years running (Reds)

- there's often a team that bounces back/improves after a bad season (Force)

- there's a completely unknown quantity (Rebels)

I don't like tipping the tahs so highly given their record. And I do think the Rebels will actually go ok.
Depending on how the season goes the Tahs and Brumbies could easily swap.
