Given the side the Crusaders have named and the importance Link is putting on the trials, the Reds should win this by a fair margin.

CAIRNS District Rugby Union president Margot Richardson believes a huge crowd at Saturday's Super 15 trial will send a clear message - we're ready to host more major sporting events.

The Queensland Reds and Canterbury Crusaders square off in the match, which has been described as the biggest game of rugby union to be played in Cairns in more than a decade.

The Reds have named a 28-man squad for the clash, with Wallaby representatives Quade Cooper, Will Genia and Digby Ioane included.

Crusaders have their reputation… The Reds have the Rocket | Crusaders will wow Barlow Park crowd

With grandstand tickets sold out and corporate areas filled, Mrs Richardson hopes a crowd of at least 10,000 will fill Barlow Park.

"I’d love for those numbers because that will send a message that Cairns cares about sport," she said.

"There’s talk of the rectangular stadium again and of council upgrading Barlow Park, but for these things to happen Cairns has to support these types of big events.

"It’s the only way we’ll attract more of them."

Both the Reds and Crusaders are expected to arrive in Cairns tomorrow about midday, with the Reds scheduled to hold an open training session at Barlow Park at 4pm.

The Reds will be available to sign autographs after Saturday’s trial.

Outer tickets are still available and cost $20 if bought before midnight on Friday. The price rises to $25 on
Saturday.

That was the warning issued by Queensland Reds and Wallabies fly-half Quade Cooper ahead of Saturday night’s game against the Canterbury Crusaders at Barlow Park.

The weapon in question is Rod Davies, the precocious Reds winger with the world at his lightning-fast feet.

Davies did enough to earn a spot on the Wallabies spring tour and played in the non-cap games against Leicester and Munster, but Cooper believes Davies is destined for bigger things in what is a World Cup year.

“He’s come along in leaps and bounds,” Cooper said.

“He’s got all the ability and speed in the world.”

Davies played fullback in the same Australian schoolboys backline as Cooper and fellow Wallaby Kurtley Beale in 2006.

If he can turn in a good Super 15 season with the Reds, there is nothing saying the trio won’t be reunited in the green and gold for September’s World Cup.

“That’d be awesome, but it’s a long way away yet,” Davies said.

“Whoever has a good Super 15 campaign will be in the mix and whoever plays well in these trials will get the first crack.”

The former Brisbane Broncos flyer has only played 11 Super Rugby games with injury reducing his 2010 season to just eight appearances.

But the Rockhampton-born Davies, who runs a sub-11 second 100m, still managed to score five tries and force Australia’s coach, Robbie Deans, to add him to the Wallabies touring party.

“I guess he saw something in me,” he said. “I haven’t spoken to Robbie about it but I know scoring tries and getting lots of touches is the best way to put my case forward.”

More of that this year for the Reds and the newest Rockhampton Rocket will, surely, play a bigger role when the Webb Ellis Trophy is up for grabs in eight months’ time.

He won’t be the only man in maroon trying to press his case, though, with at least 15 in with a chance of making the trip to New Zealand at the end of the Super 15 season.

Cooper, Davies, Ben Daley, Anthony and Saia Fainga'a, Will Genia, Scott Higginbotham, Peter Hynes, Van Humphries, Luke Morahan, Rob Simmons and James Slipper all travelled on the spring tour while injury kept James Horwill, Digby
Ioane and Will Chambers out of contention.

Cooper compared the feeling in the squad to that of a boxer raring to go before a big fight.

“Everyone is excited, there’s been a big build-up and we just want to play,” he said.

“The World Cup definitely adds to the excitement. It’s the pinnacle of the sport.”

Chambers - Ioane at 12 -13,

I like it, I like it a lot.

No doubt that when A.Fainga'a is back we'll see 11. Ioane 12.Fainga'a 13.Chambers but it's a centre pairing I've been keen to see outside of Cooper.

A crowd of 10,000 would be awesome.

I'll believe it when I see it to be honest.

Could Cairns be a base for a combined Pac Is. team for a future expanded Super rugby competition, should that many turn up? It has an international airport and so forth...
