Substitutes: Ryno Barnes, Coenie Oosthuizen, Walti Vermeulen, Frans Viljoen, Sarel Pretorius, Sias Ebersohn, Danwel Demas.

Super Rugby debuts for some promising Tin Ears.

Riaan Viljoen (fullback), Lionel Mapoe (right wing) and Ashley Johnson (No 8) will make their debut in the starting team, while Ryno Barnes (hooker), Coenie Oosthuizen (prop), Walti Vermeulen (lock) and Sias Ebersohn (flyhalf) will get the chance to play off the substitutes bench for the first time.

Re: Round 1: SA Derbys (Tin Ears vs Brutes & Lions vs Stormers)

That Cheetahs front 5 is going to give a lot of teams a lot of problems.

I have an uneasy feeling about this game.

Re: Round 1: SA Derbys (Tin Ears vs Brutes & Lions vs Stormers)

They sure have the best set of losies with it. Quite surprise to see Sarel Pretorius on the bench. Also hoping young Sias Ebersohn will break through at this level, never was a big Naas or Louis fan.

Also not at ease with the Lions. Unknown quantity at this stage and bot home teams know they have to win at home. The Stormers usually slow starters and if they and the Brutes get the first games win , they'll be ready for their home run on slaughts.

Hmmm, interesting that Juries isn't wanted on the bench.

Think the Stormers will easily accounter for the Lions, by maybe 10+ points.

Think the Brutes will beat the Cheetahs too, but it will be closer than a lot of people around Aus / NZ think.

Bout right. Bulls / Cheethas game are traditional shitfights.

Just worry about injuries.

Re: Round 1: SA Derbys (Tin Ears vs Brutes & Lions vs Stormers)

Yep the Stormers vs Lions are also going to be close. We dont know much about the Lions but the word I got from their inner den is that they will be hungry. You never ever underestimate when Dick Muir and Ackerman is involve in coaching. The Stormers lost to them in the CC in the last round and I expect the Lions to be a tougher team they had that day.

Mjevuku is a bit of a dicey one. Play U19 last year and now thrown into the deep end by Muir. Also glad to not see Walter Venter in 12 (Vis from proteas kid), deadly defender. Pack look solid tho.

Stormers – 15 Joe Pietersen, 14 Gio Aplon, 13 Jaque Fourie, 12 Juan de Jongh, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Peter Grant, 9 Dewaldt Duvenage, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Francois Louw, 6 Schalk Burger (c), 5 Andries Bekker, 4 De Kock Steenkamp, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Tiaan Liebenberg, 1 Wicus Blaauw.

Quite surprise to see the younger Galpil Steenkamp brother starting in lock. Pitty we dont have Hendrik Gerber to counter King Carlos but still hoping either him or Rose to pass at least twice the ball to Habana. The Lions maybe have the better pack but this Stormer backline simply will have to much stung in the backline. Expecting Grant to feed the wide runners. Look out for the young Cronje playing from the bench.

Getting the basics right

The Auto and Generals Lions’ director of coaching Dick Muir on Thursday announced the Lions side for their first Super 14 match of the season against the Stormers at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday.

Ons of the expected surprises in the starting side is teenager Wandile Mjekevu on the left wing. He is one of six new players in the starting line-up and one of nine in the match-22.

Carlos Spencer has been selected as the flyhalf. He will be partnered at halfback by another newcomer in JP Joubert, former Bulls and Cheetahs scrumhalf.

Springbok and former Stormers wing Tonderai Chavanga starts on the left wing. Up front, last year’s inspirational Griquas skipper and No 8 Jonothan Mokuena is a new face as is his lock mate from Kimberley Jacques Lombard.

Pumas hooker and captain of last year, Hannes Franklin, is another newcomer to the Lions Super 14 side who also gets a run from the lesser-known unions.

Tighthead prop Kevin Buys has an injury and Ross Geldenhuys, who was loaned to the Blue Bulls towards the end of last season, is back in favour.

Charles Emslie, a retreaded No 8 at hooker, former Bulls flyhalf Burton Francis and Puma scrumhalf Jacque Coetzee are the three newcomers on the bench.

It looks a solid enough team, and the only question that can be raised is whether they will be able to find one another without any game time together.

Notable omissions from the side are last year’s number two scrumhalf Chris Jonck, former Springbok prop Lawrence Sephaka, former Bok lock Jannes Labuschangne, former Bok wing Henno Mentz and regulars from last year’s Lions and Golden Lions sides Hans van Dyk, Robert Kruger, Herkie Kruger, Pieter Engelbrecht, Ruan Boshoff and Jannie Boshoff.

Re: Round 1: SA Derbys (Tin Ears vs Brutes & Lions vs Stormers)

Brutes was clinical , Stormers OK but the rest disappointing. Thought the Kiwi ref plus Cockette unability to play in the wet cost the Sharks. The Lions show some teeth in the second half and strecthed the Stormers defense to the limit. Habana and Mossie show their value for us and I am sure the Stormers adabted the best to the new ref rulings of all teams. King Carlos was disappointing and totally lost it when he saw Schalk in his sight. Shame. Pretty confident for saturdays clash with the Tahs but we need to play for 80 minutes.

Round 2 Sharks vs Tin Ears:

Tin Ears team
15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Danwel Demas, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 10 Naas Olivier, 9 Tewis de Bruyn, 8 Frans Viljoen, 7 Juan Smith (c), 6 Heinrich Brussow, 5 David de Villiers, 4 Nico Breedt, 3 WP Nel, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Wian du Preez.
Replacements: 16 Ryno Barnes, 17 Coenie Oosthuizen, 18 Waltie Vermeulen, 19 Ashley Johnson, 20 Sarel Pretorius, 21 Sias Ebersohn, 22 Hennie Daniller

Interesting to move Mapoe to 13. The Tin Ears problem is their defense in the 10/12/13 channel. Well they plays their bitches the Sharks who have vokkel in that channel aswell, so dont be surprise for a upset like in the CC semi on friday. The Tin Ears usually strike when you think they are down and out.

PaarlBok

Rod McCall (65)
They (Sharks) have been pretty disappointing in round 1. The ref was useless then Donald and Cockette try their best to lose the match for their teams in the rain, then flippen Bismarck Doep join Cockette, game over.

Anyway I think the Sharks have bigger problems then we think. They dont have Varsity Cup teams to strengthen their structure and now living of Lion poaches after the Tin Ears kept their own lot.

Rod McCall (65)
Sharks – 15. Stefan Terblanche, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. Waylon Murray, 12. Adrian Jacobs, 11. JP Pietersen, 10. Ruan Pienaar, 9. Rory Kockott, 8. Ryan Kankowski, 7. Jean Deysel, 6. Jacques Botes, 5. Alistair Hargreaves, 4. Steven Sykes, 3. Jannie du Plessis , 2. John Smit (c), 1. Tendai Mtawarira.
Subs: 16. Bismarck du Plessis, 17. Deon Carstens, 18. Willem Alberts, 19 Keegan Daniel, 20. Charl McLeod, 21. Monty Dumond, 22. Andries Strauss.

Look like a better Sharks team, Smit's ton game.
