Is Canada stagnating?

They've just had their 2nd season of the best national tournament set-up they've seen (the Canadian part of the Americas Rugby Championship) and they beat a France A featuring players like Julien Dupuy early this year.

I'm not saying they aren't, perhaps you are insinuating at grass route level, but it certainly would appear quite the opposite.

Certainly at grassroots. The Canadian team made significant progress a couple of seasons back but then just stopped. They are at a good level now but to be honest they haven't gone on with it. Considering their performances during the Churchill Cup a couple of seasons ago they should have been further down the line. A lot of this stagnation is a direct result their administration and its lack of stability and leadership.

I have a canadian friend who bemoans the current state of their 15 man side. Losses earlier this year to Japan (and thumping ones, from memory) were a shock to most fans over there, and I agree with WMR above, they were coming along strongly a few years back and seem to have dropped off the pace of improvment

For a country like Canada where simply getting a player playing some form of professional rugby is the target, I don't see this as a HUGE issue.

well it is quite the issue from a XV's perspective, funding has been removed from XV man competitions and redirected towards the 7's competitions..

Certainly, but we have to consider here where is better being a Canadian club player with a day job who attends elite training camps OR a full time professional 7s plus playing some XVs.

The will certainly be better physically prepared plus they will still play the big XV games in the non 7s part of the year. It really could be worse.

They have competed in all the previous 6 RWC's.

There aren't many fully professional contracts available for Canadians outside of their 7s, in fact I don't even known if their 7s players are currently fully professional but I'd presume they couldn't be far off as they fly them around everywhere. Whether it's fully professional or not having players play 7s would at very least mean more time in a professional enviroment.

Whereas, a locally based XV only player only gets a few reasonably high level games a year. It's great they are expanding the opportunities for these games with big tours and playing their Select XV more but the reality is these people have day jobs and they wouldn't get much time for life to be about the rugby. Going on the long 7s tours would change this.

More funding in 7s and more professional contracts would certainly reap benefits for smaller nations like this.

you didnt offend, Its purely a case where i have see nothing to support what you said, if you have some sources which i dont then i am interested to know.

I strongly believe that directing funding which was previously XV's funding to the 7's game will ultimately harm XV's rugby in Canada. Its not only limited to the strenght and conditioning of the players, but the coaching support and local tournament funding which goes along with it.

Your post reminds me of the first rugby game i attended in Brisbane 2003. A man behind me would shout go Romania everytime Australia scored. He ended up shouting it about 13 times I think.
