Look, I know he's done a lot since but surely Quade getting nominated for a 2010 Rugby Union Players’ Award Medal for Excellence (Every professional player in Australia is asked to vote on a 3-2-1 basis for a fellow player who they believe excelled on and off the field in 2010 in areas of performance, leadership, consistency and discipline plus their contribution to charitable work, vocational skills and their commitment to the development of the game), is just ridiculous?

nominees are Cooper, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), Genia, Pocock and Sharpe.

Have to go Bam Bam?

Nominees for newcomer award are Damien Fitzpatrick, Kane Douglas (both from the Waratahs) and Pat McCabe.

Especially as Bam is heavily involved (possibly co-founder?) of the 8020 charity.

Speaking of illustrious player awards - when does the G&GR Player of the Year/EOYT happen?

It would be pretty hard to go past Pocock. He looks the poster boy for a "hard but fair" style of play. His attitude and behaviour off the field cant be faulted and he seems to be the Captain in waiting. Tough CV to beat.

This will be interesting.

On progression to Wallabies McCabe wins

But Kane Douglas is the only special player on the list and I am still amazed that Deans doesn't rate him.

Perhaps Quade donates laptops to less fortunate children?

Brilliant, Ham.

Pocock should win easily. Sharpie and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) to battle for second. If S14 form counts then Genia and Cooper might be in with a chance

Wow, Any chance to have a dig at Quade. That is of course when he is not doing something brilliant on the field for the team you support, then he becomes the greatest thing since sliced bread. Talk about having your cake and eating it too. He was nominated by his own peers and there is nothing ridiculous about that.

Congratulations to all the nominees.

Over my head . . .

That is of course when he is not doing something brilliant on the field for the team you support, then he becomes the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Even as a die-hard Tahs fan I'd love to see the Reds as a real force next year (and the Rebels for that matter -- not that fussed about the self-proclaimed Brumbie "superstars"). Imagine having three teams in an expanded finals series!!

In fact, there's no doubt in my mind that the Tahs benefited from the Reds performance this year as well -- they definitely played some very attractive and skilful rugby, influenced in part (IMHO) by the Reds. Also, with the Reds performing well, some of the pressure that usually gets heaped on the Tahs as the most competitive Aussie team gets dispersed.

So I say, 'Go for it Reds' . . . it's just that I will be screaming 'GO THE TAHS' as loud as I can.

Yeah, the Tahs game wearing the tablecloths playing the Canes was a great example (maybe they should adopt those eye-sores permanently). The Reds wrote the playbook but it also suits guys like Beale perfectly.

By comparison, the Tahs-Brumbies match was the worst rugby of the s14 season. The traditional grudge matches aren't often scintillating affairs but the Brumbies really were lacklustre all year.

Ah the "Running game". The Reds didn't write that playbook. They are just the latest in a long line of "pretenders" to the running rugby crown. At least it stops the Brumbies from claiming the tag.

From the venerable source, Wikipedia:
The most famous Waratah team was the 1927/28 Waratahs who toured the United Kingdom, France and North America, introducing a style of open, running rugby never seen before, but which has been the stamp of the Australian game ever since.

Just ask Mark Ella -- or any Randwick fan -- who invented the "running game". I just wish they would use it more often!!

That is my only anxiety about the home/away expanded local derby format.

Hopefully we will get an increase in "entertainment" commensurate with the increased number of games.

It's ridiculous that his teamates chose to ignore the award is for "excellence on and off the field in 2010 in areas of performance, leadership, consistency and discipline plus their contribution to charitable work, vocational skills and their commitment to the development of the game"
If he is in the top 5 within the Wallaby playing group for these things, then as a group they are morally bankrupt.

I'm not sure that Mark would have much knowledge of what happened more than 80 years ago.

And the answer implicit in your question, zeedok, is not necessarily correct.

A.C. "Johnnie" Wallace "was captain and coach of the Waratahs on their groundbreaking tour to Europe in 1927-28 and is considered a founding father of running Rugby."

"... a trip on which they developed a 15-man running game that became the template for Wallabies teams into the future and had European critics in raptures."

"Before the tour, Wallace had asked the Australian selectors to put skill ahead of size in their thoughts when choosing the forwards contingent.

"'Give me a man with skill, pace and pluck rather than a bonehead,' he told the selectors.

"They did, and the Waratahs ran through Europe, losing only five of the 37 matches they played." (ARU website)

According to Jack Pollard's book, Australian Rugby, Wallace was "an incomparable tactician who had a marked influence on running rugby in Scotland and Australia, and had notable success as a coach after he retired."

Wallace played for Sydney University from 1920 to 1922, Oxford University and Scotland from 1923 to 1925,before joining Glebe-Balmain in 1926. Interestingly only three of the 26 Original Waratahs of 1927-28 came from Randwick - A.J.A. Bowers, C.H.T.Towers and P.B. Judd.

Ah, Zeedoc, I was with you until I realised you were a "golden era" booster.

The game that the Wallabies (and similarly Reds allowing for their local variations) are playing now is not the "running game" of old. The defence is tighter and flatter and the tempo of the game has changed. It is as much about targeted passing as running. Quick recycling of the ball is critical and the forwards are more mobile and very much more involved.

Everyone loved the Randwick style of the 70s and 80s, and some of that, of course, is passed on to today. What the hell, maybe even some of that 20's spirit you mention, although that's a longer bow. Rugby has had to change to cope with the power game that has come with the decades and the advent of professionalism. It's a different game.

I read some of his book: "Running Rugby" in which he acknowledges a direct line of influence on his play from previous Waratahs teams. I couldn't quite remember who it was specifically that influenced him, so I left that bit out.

Point taken! Still Waratahs though . . .

It's rediculous for you to presume you know more about him meeting that criteria set out than his team mates. They are in a far better position to asses that one you would think.
