Soccer-Crazy Brazil Opening Its Arms to Rugby

In Brazil, soccer is a religion and its stars, like Pelé and Ronaldo, are revered as gods.

But soccer is not the only game in Brazil. Rugby is the second-fastest growing sport there, behind mixed martial arts, and the Confederação Brasileira de Rugby, or Brazil Rugby Union, has started implementing a development plan to secure a stronger presence for the game in the region.

Interesting article in the NY Times. Highlights the important role 7s and the Olympic games are playing in developing rugby.

"Total Rugby" had a segment on Brazil this week. Brazil is a huge country, and it is developing economically at a very fast rate. Plenty of room for rugby, I am certain.

Corinthians FC have just recently opened their own Rugby wing with intentions to develop it into a professional entity over the next 5 years. There has been a great deal of development occurring in Brazil over the past three years and its expected that with the onset of Olympic funding that it will dramatically increase. Another bit of news is the Canterbury (both the province and Super Rugby entity) have signed on with the CBRU to develop and implement coaching programs and pathways.
