The box I have 'sends back a signal'??? My watching is included in foxtel figures??

How (technically) do they do that? very interesting.
Not to the ratings agency. Foxtel might do their own research though......

If you are recruited to a Neilson panel (3500 homes across the country) you get a box which hooks up to the TV and samples the audio which gets sent back to the agency and analysed.

If you ask certain parts of the A-League community they believe Nielsen ratings is a conspiracy weighted against football supporters and towards the NRL/AFL.

Right, I remember yeaaaars ago to be part of the survey you had to fill in by hand what you watched each week, broken down by time.

not really accurate methinks.

3500 homes? again, not particularly in depth but there ya go.

They record minute-by-minute.

The ratings which are published here are the average for the broadcast but you'll also see peak viewers occasionally.

How they do it has changed over the years which is why comparing back in time is difficult.

Do you know how they determine the average. Is it total minutes watched divided by 80. Or do Fox have ratings boxes similar to how FTA channels are, The same question for FTA do you have to watch the entire show.

You don't have to watch the whole show. The rating is the total minute-by-minute viewers divided by the number of viewers.

Same process for foxtel and FTA (in the capital cities) - oztam contract Neilson to collect the ratings.

3500 households are in the panel for FTA and 1413 households on the paytv panel.

Any statisticians around? Sample sizes, and the composition of the panel, are determined scientifically. All surveys have a margin for error. The larger the sample, the smaller the margin for error, and vice versa.

The only sample size that has no margin for error is, of course, 100% of the population being surveyed.

A larger sample size only reduces the margin of error if the sample is of the same or better quality as the smaller sample size.

All the effort goes into perfecting the sample.

yeah, a statistician would be good. My point was, dunno how many homes in australia, let's say a million, well 3500 homes is SFA really. For the larger sports, NRL, AFL I would certainly trust the figures more, simply because the chance of 'catching' the fans is higher. If rugby is as small as we fear, the reverse applies.

Maybe everyone on this forum should, by hook or by crook, get themselves onto the database. In such a small sample size as 3500, a rotating roster of 50 members of GAGR would swing the numbers enormously.

50 people from the NRL forum would not change it at all, 50 from here would be significant.

Our usual source (@mediaweekaus) seems to have stopped tweeting the super Rugby ratings for some reason. They will be public eventually in the next couple of days.

Shute Sheild - 31k

Shute Shield figures not really impacted by the Waratahs v Sunwolves on Foxtel at the same time ~ seems SS is around 30-35k most weeks.

Probably 2-3k down on a "usual" weekend. Less than a swing to Labour.

Tahs game ratings are ok
Rebs rating is shit.
Are these peak viewing figures? If they aren't everybody probably went to watch the news/movie channel (it was free last night & probably today)
