The young blokes report that there would have been >2000* people inside the Sports Bar at the Star Casino with a queue around the corner to get in.

Similar reports of chocker venues from a couple of other places in Sydney.

How do they reconcile those sort of figures into the ratings?

There was some talk a while ago about the introduction of mobile people meters. Dunno whether it happened, probably not, otherwise we would have read about it somewhere.

I think the inherent problem with counting people who watch at the pub is that

a) it's very costly to count them as they leave and enter the pub.

b) they are probably too pissed to see ads all that well / during ads will have chats to mates.

All in all I think you have to be happy with these ratings, remember that its in the graveyard shift. The brand power levers given to the ARU as they are negotiating a new TV rights deal are invaluable. Awesome work by everyone involved.

The ratings for the WC final will come out tomorrow, anyone want to have a guess at what they'll be?

I think that sounds about right. 109K watched it in Perth, on Channel 9. That suggests a number a little bit shy of a million, all up.

Scratch that, it'll be well north of 800K. The channel 9 metro numbers hit 611K by themselves (Syd 219K, Mel 112K, Bri 138K, Ade 33K, Per 109K).

The Foxtel figures are out: 292,000 watched the match live and 150,000 watched the replays in the morning. A total figure of 442,000.

Add the FTA figures and the the total live audience was 903,000. The total viewing figure was 1.053 million.

And that's not even including non-metro FTA (which includes Canberra). It's a really solid number.

Yeah, great result when considering it doesn't include regional figures. When everything put together could be over 1m viewers which for 3 am in the morning is a phenomenal result. Makes you wonder that if the game had been in primetime how it would have rated.

Word around the water cooler was that those punters that watched it at their local (it appeared many clubs got a special license extension to open) was that they were all packed. These dont get picked up in FTA numbers.

Fantastic result for Aussie rugby. All the chat over here in Perth in the lead up to the final was about how excited everyone was that the Wallabies had made it. There was a real buzz about the place and even the local news outlets had front and centre coverage in prime time. Now to cash in on it and ride the wave of goodwill.

The All Blacks' World Cup victory was watched by a global television audience of 120 million.

World Rugby released figures on Monday that showed the reach of the eighth edition of the tournament.

The growth of social media had a massive impact with people digitally engaged. Activity in this area exceeded the 2011 tournament in New Zealand just in the pool stages. The knockout stages were bonus territory for the tournament in this department.


The tournament hashtag #RWC2015 was used twice a second for the duration of the tournament and over five million times in total.

There were over 270 million video views on all social media channels, the tournament website attracted 25 million unique users and the official App was downloaded 2.8 million times with use in 204 nations.

Ticket sales exceeded 2.47 million.

England Rugby 2015 has generated over $569 million in ticket revenues, delivering a $182 million surplus to World Rugby and a $34 million surplus to the RFU.

"Rugby World Cup 2015 will be remembered as the biggest tournament to date, but I also believe that it will be remembered as the best. England 2015 has been the most competitive, best-attended, most-watched, most socially-engaged, most commercially-successful World Cup," World Rugby Chairman Bernard Lapasset said.

I'd like to see a breakdown of that 120 million figure. Seems a bit too good to be true. I think from memory that the 2011 final was watched by around 30 million.

A couple of years ago the UEFA Champions League final had 150 million viewers globally and that's popular in a lot more places than rugby.

If it is true then that would be an amazing number.

I think that the 2011 RWC final would have been in "unfriendly" TV hours for many parts of the world, whereas the 2015 event would have been played at a time that suited many European, African and American sets of eyes, and lets face it there are a lot of sets of eyes there, compared to here.

Well the 2011 final was played (I think) at 8am in the UK, 9am in France. So not really that bad. It doesn't account for a 90 million difference, especially as this final clashed with heaps of European soccer. And France being in that final would have given it a huge boost given France is probably the biggest rugby TV market.

Just looked it up - in 2011 the Final attracted the largest television audience for the calendar year in France with an average of 13.4 million viewers, a peak of 18.1 million and an audience share of 82 per cent.

I doubt this one will be that high. I think if 120 million is legit then it would have had to be through some huge numbers in non-traditional markets like India and across Europe.
