Actually, the word Merkin is an auto substitute by the forum software for whenever someone types C***

And I'm not there to stir. I'm there in peace. I actually like League. My boys are big Bronco's fans, even though they play Rugby. They don't see the games as THAT different (they're only 10 and 7) and they love State of Origin. All I did was say "Bit of an over-reaction isn't it lads - it was just a satirical wind-up piece after all" and after that, no matter where I go I seem to be marked as a trolling Rugby toff merkin. It is, apparently, not possible to like two sports if one is rugby and the other is league.

I just want to know where NRL fans believe this supposed $1B TV deal is coming from?

Channel 9 are broke, and Channel 7 won't pay as much as they did for the AFL...

there are 4 games of any interest to anyone outside nsw and qld league die hards: gf and 3 origin games

The Sunday game is on at a time no one will watch

Still I'm not here to tell them how to fix the boring, predictable game they play in hell

the ratings suggest otherwise

NRL disputes AFL audience claim
A FIERCE battle over audience figures has broken out between Australia's two biggest football codes as they gear up for broadcasting rights negotiations.
The National Rugby League has moved to shoot down claims published last week that the Australian Football League was the most-watched football code in Australia.
A press report claimed the AFL was the most watched sport on TV, with an average of 14.64 million viewers per club over the course of a season.
This compared with the NRL's average audience if 13.81 million per club, the report said.
While the AFL was keen to talk up its audience numbers, the same report revealed that the NRL outpaced the AFL in cumulative audience across the entire season by more than 9 million viewers.
"Overall, the NRL delivered a total cumulative audience of 120.6 million across all coverage compared to the 111.1 million for the AFL," the report said.
While the AFL claimed, on a club-by-club basis, that it was ahead of its rival, the NRL also finished ahead in terms of average audience by fixture, with an audience of 1.01 million on free-to-air TV compared with 884,000 for the AFL.
The report comes at a critical time for both codes, which are in the midst of rights negotiations with commercial broadcasters and Foxtel.
The AFL talks are understood to be more advanced, but all parties are waiting on the communications minister to finalise anti-siphoning rules that will decide the mechanism that divides sports rights between pay-TV and free-to-air television.
The NRL negotiations will begin in earnest once the new governing structure of the NRL is bedded down following News Limited's (publisher of The Australian) exit.
Both codes are aiming for multi-year deals worth close $1 billion each.
The NRL rights split between the Nine Network and Foxtel commanded an estimated $500 million when they were last negotiated in 2006. At the same time the AFL was worth $780m, split between Seven and Ten.
The figures also show that the NRL attracted 241,000 viewers on Fox Sports for each fixture, compared with the AFL, which drew 170,000.
While the AFL had used the report to talk up its value to sponsors, it is believed the NRL will use it as a cornerstone in its push for a boost in the price it extracts for its broadcast rights when negotiations begin later this year.
Shane Mattiske, the NRL's director of strategic projects, said the report had reinforced the NRL's dominance on pay-TV ahead of the negotiations.
"If the AFL is going to get a lift out of Foxtel, it means we are going to have to get an even greater lift given how critical we are to Foxtel," he said. "In 2010, we had 73 of the top 100 programs on Foxtel and the AFL only made eight."
Mr Mattiske said there was little understanding of the NRL's dominance of the pay-TV sector in the broader community .
"If pay-TV lost rugby league in the crucial markets of NSW and Queensland, then it would have dire effects. They just simply cannot afford to lose us," he said.
Last week, Fox Sports Monday Night Football broadcast set a new record for the broadcaster with an average of 365,000 viewers tuning in to the clash between the Bulldogs and Tigers.
"It positions us very strongly when you come to think about the next round of media rights," Mr Mattiske said.
The report found that while the AFL delivered a higher free-to-air cumulative audience when the grand final replay was taken into account, without the replay the NRL triumphed.
Collingwood proved the most popular club across the board with a cumulative audience of just over 23 million, only narrowly defeating the St George Dragons when the grand final replay was discounted.
Two weeks ago, Foxtel chief executive Kim Williams told The Australian and Deutsche Bank Future of Media Forum that he was keen to bid for a bigger slice of the AFL pie.
The push by Foxtel to get more of the AFL, sparked by changes to anti-siphoning legislation, has sparked concerns within the NRL that any increased commitment to the AFL could come at a cost to the NRL's coverage on pay-TV.

Afl is better value because they fewer games, I think, so it costs less to attract the viewers

However, the AFL GF regularly remains as the highest rating football event in the country...

But the point is that Channel 9 are struggling to stay afloat, and there won't be the same fierce competition for TV rights as there was for the AFL...

The channels need content to fill time slots - that draws viewers to sell ads. I expect a convoluted deal to be sorted out covering a few channels that will make the NRL a load of money

Fox/Telstra will lead the charge with NRL, as they did the AFL. League offers them a lot of content, and with 3 sports channels to fill with ads, it works for them.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fox bought the entire rights package and on-sold 3 or so games to Nine/Ten. I'd be very surprised if Seven won any rights.

Channel 9 are struggling at the moment (industry rumours suggest they were on the brink of shutting down recently - most likely an exaggeration but certainly a reflection of their poor financial status), and Channel 7 will be challenging them for the FTA rights after enjoying another big revenue year, but certainly won't put up as much as they did for the AFL...

Channel 10 might be interested, but from what I hear won't be much of a player...

Definitely most of the cash will come from Fox/Telstra, however there won't be the same fierce competition for the FTA rights jacking up the price that there was for the AFL.

Are there ratings figures out there on Super Rugby? I ask because both NRL and AFL are obviously broadcast on both free to air and pay. I had to get pay TV as that was the only place that I was going to be able to see any rugby and wanted an option when the other games were on. To tell you the honest truth I had not even registered that the other codes had that much pay coverage. (If rugby is not on then I am rarely watching sport... but the winter games are getting a bit of a run lately.) I suppose what I am trying to ask is what the difference is / would be if Rugby got a gig on free to air (other than the tests)?

Rugby Union dominated the top ten most watched programs on pay TV this year... but that was mostly for the World Cup...

However, I think the Super Rugby GF still got #1?

Ranking #1 on pay is not surprising as that is the only place most of us get to see it. Do we know the numbers compared the combined free&pay of the other codes?

Just starting to think that this might be an untapped resource for rugby, i.e. put a game or two on free to air each weekend and this will expose more viewers and get more people interested. I reckon that there are probably a lot of people out there that don't watch rugby as it would mean having to get pay tv, but if they did watch would get into it.

Which poster said - Put it together with doof doof music and balloons and people would come. Or something like that. Sorry if I have miss quoted you.

unfortunately, the free to air networks pay for what they have on there station in relation to the money they can make off it. If the game of the round was to go to free to air and fox lose it then australian rugby would probably lose out money wise4 at the moment. of course its a chicken and an egg type argument. yet int he current climate, taking the best money on offer is the right thing to do. hopefully it changes in the next few years.

The Reds to start the season with a completely different game plan - grinding out a few games. Then when Cooper comes back, they'll work teams over by switching the two tactics.

Robbie Deans to be confused.

won't the anti siphoning rules prevent this
S15 has been shown on FTA albeit "at midnight on Easter Sunday" type time slots so it's never rated.
I prefer to think of it as our secret: the great unwashed don't get it...it's their loss
