Rugby League players who could have/could make the switch

I wonder how Cooper Cronk would have gone had he stayed in Rugby. I rate him higher than Thurston and Hayne. Queensland lost this year's SOO when he broke his arm. He could have been a handy 12.

Controls and reads the game really well. High class player and character who is so dedicated to training and perfection. Would have made it in rugby without doubt.

And the kid can defend. Good on him for sticking with the mob that showed faith in him, but gee, I'd say he and Folau are the two blokes from the NRL that I would want lining up against the All Blacks. Other players like Ben Hannant and Gary Larson had the right attitude to the game, but technically are/were too middle-of-the-road League to adapt to Rugby's requirement for more specialised players. Then again, there's always blokes like Brad Thorn to prove me wrong.

like rugby the game they play in heaven or whatever.

arguing over marketing slogans is a bit of a meh imo.

IMO if I am running Parramatta I am making a play at Folau not Beale. The thing the ARU is losing is its big carrots of winning a world cup or gold medal are more becoming participating in these things.
They better or else I will have wasted my life trying to be a good boy, I am planning an eternity watching Rugby

ENGLISH rugby union giants Gloucester are set to launch a $1 million raid to try and jag the signature of 120kg South Sydney prop forward George Burgess.
In a move that could see the Burgess brothers pitted head-to-head in northern hemisphere rugby, Sport Confidential can confirm multi-millionaire Gloucester owner Ryan Walkinshaw has made Burgess his No. 1 target on the back of his powerful NRL grand final heroics.

this comes as no surprise, except in the sense that it took so long.

didn't TGC say early in his tenure at the Tahs that he would like a Burgess in his squad?

memo BillyPoo: there are two more where Sam and George B came from. they are not hard to find, as they train very near the Tahs.

I wonder if its because of that Farrell bloke who played league and is now involved in union in England. English union seems huge on getting league players. Atleast compared to Australia, who probably could get more out of it.

I am surprised they don't go for graham who is in my opinion the best English league player, he is a bit shorter then George as well which is always good for the union scrimmaging.

NRL salary cap is $6.3m over 25 players v Super Rugby of $4.5m over 30 players.

Unless the ARU steps in with a top-up, which they can't do for many, all things being equal you get paid more playing league in Australia

(I just looked up the Premiership Rugby Salary cap in England as a comparison - approx $10m aud)

For the bonafide stars, there is money outside of the regular contract due to test match payments and 3rd party deals.

Less extra payments for rep games in league and 3rd party deals aren't allowed.

Don't rep payments actually get included in the NRL cap too?

I think that last bit might have changed these days Braveheart

What players can earn outside the salary cap:
$600,000 - Marquee Player Allowance - any or all of the Top 25 players at each club can share in payments made by club sponsors seeking to use a player's intellectual property. These may be guaranteed in the playing contract by clubs.
$100,000 - Motor Vehicle Allowance – a maximum amount of five motor vehicles may be provided to players in the Top 25 outside of the salary cap. (Valued at $20,000 each).
Unlimited - Players can earn unlimited amounts from corporate sponsors who are not associated with the club and who do not use the game's intellectual property (no club logos, jerseys or emblems) provided these are pre-approved. These agreements may not be negotiated by the club as an incentive for a player to sign a contract, nor can they be guaranteed by the club.

That bit is key, and the bit I reckon is most commonly broken. It would be extremely hard for the NRL salary cap auditor to prove.

I personally think going for NRL players (with some union pedigree/background) and high profiles is something ARU should continue to ensure key priority. Why? Because they have high profiles in other games which would attract NRL fans to watch and support union games.

Folau huge success.....Hunt suspect will be too...even Rogers, Tuquiri and Sailor all helped develop unions profile amongst a NRL fan base that might not have otherwise shown much interest in union...I go to AFL, A League and rugby games.....(not NRL as find league boring) but I am type of fan other codes are interested in ie may support AFL or NRL but prepared to support other games....
