When I started playing school rugby in 1996, we still had leather balls in the kit bag. From that and my aussie rules experience, leather balls are fine in the dry and become a water-logged horror in the wet. They look good, but give me a synthetic ball to play with any day.

I have fond memories of the leather balls. The problem was that my playing ability relegated me to the lesser of all the school grounds and 9am starts. Passing a mis-shapen leather ball on frost/ dew covered poorly grassed grounds was an experience. Especially to my fingers when I caught the ball incorrectly, which occurred far frequently than catching it properly and a bit less than not catching it at all. Still, memories of those long gone days seem to improve with age.

But there is also a sense of pride in turning up with the team dressed the same. It also shows you are serious about what is going to happen.
potentially, but I dont think that looking the same as the rest of the team is behind the "i wear my socks down and collar up" brigade :)
