Rugby Kits and Style

Long hair, stubble, greased ears (headgear was for wingers and 10's), garlic breath....cotton jersey with sleves rolled above elbows, out at the front (to assist crutch binding locks), firm shorts to protect said locks ears, socks down, addidas, black 3/4 length boots held together by tape ...with an ever expanding waist line as the years rolled on

Jersey: Long sleeves (we weren't allowed to own the jerseys), collar down, one button done up and tucked in.
Shorts: Standard Canterburys
Socks: Up. Carry over from playing hockey. It felt normal.
Shoes: Black high top. Puma or Adidas can't quite remember.
Tape around the head.

I tried head gear but it was too hot.

Kit - whatever the club supplied with fees. Shoes - preferably black with screw-in studs, black headgear. Shirt in, socks up. One year I wore green headgear as it was the club's colours and in my last season I wore white boots as it was all I could afford when my old black boots fell to pieces (evidently only so much tape could hold them together and playing prop I needed decent boots for scrummaging).

No headgear or shoulder pads because that shit's for fags and backs. I play on the openside generally so I take great delight in throwing verbal abuse at fullbacks and wingers(Same thing?) who wear headgear, shoulder pads, bicep pads, forearm pads or any other queer shit they think they need to wear for there 3 runs and 2 tackles a game.

I'll agree with you on shoulder pads and that stuff but there's nothing soft/faggish about head gear.

Being fairly tall and playing second row I always wear socks up, partly to cover any bleeding from someone stepping on me. Jersey tucked in to make it harder for tackling and so it didn´t get tangled during lineouts or scrums.

So I take it you're a flanker then. Explains why you have all that time to yell at backs at scrumtime as like many you probably don't push. Headgear in the front row imo is essentrial as cauliflower ear isn't a good look. Shoulder pads provide little protection but makes things a little more comfortable when scrummaging.

No headgear or pads available back in the day. Hell, we didn't wear gumguards either. Just some glycerin on the gums to make your teeth slippery and prevent cuts.

Other than that, short sleeve jersey, Cantabs for the shorts, mouthguard, black boots with the heel-tabs cut and headgear I can never bring myself to wear.

At school we were made to boil and whiten our bootlaces every week, to be worn in black high top boots of course. If the laces disintegrated as they were prone to do, tape was provided but frowned upon as just a little bit unnecessarily flamboyant. Padding of any kind was not allowed except headgear with approval from the school doctor. Socks were to be taped up and kept up, jerseys tucked in for the commencement of the game but were allowed to be untucked by the forwards as required in scrummaging. Collars were the only area where personal preference was allowed and unusual arrangements were attempted as a result.
Needless to say, we were mostly crap at the actual game.

I think most Kiwi boys my age grew up with the mantra that time spent playing with gear is time you could have spent training or practising. Most concerned I ever got was getting the #8 jersey and making sure my sprigs were tight. Tape as needed, jersey probably ended up pulled out, socks fell down! Dunno what it's like now though.

Not meaning to sound like a grumpy old bastard, but surely your jerser should be worn by pulling it over your head - your socks should be on, your collar should be wherever it sits on its own, and your boots should do nothing more than fit well, irrespective of colour.

But there is also a sense of pride in turning up with the team dressed the same. It also shows you are serious about what is going to happen.
