I'm talking Hypotheticals based on todays players in a current 7s team. We can start debating the actual Olympics 7s team in about 6 years.

if the Olympics were this year, I'd pick a squad of 14 to train with:

1 Peter Hynes
2 Digby Ione
3 James O'Connor
4 Luke Burgess
5 Adam Ashley-Cooper
6 Stephen Hoiles
7 Rocky Elsom
8 Drew Mitchell
9 Rob Horne
10 Matt Giteau
11 Ben Lucas
12 Nick Cummins
13 David Pocock
14 Scott Higginbottham

Interestly I put up a team on another site. Similar to yours.

Matt Giteau, Steven Hoiles, Lachlan Turner, James O'Connor, Ben Lucas, Rob Horne, Peter Hynes, Blair Connor, David Pocock, George Smith, Rocky Elsom, Drew Mitchell

I agree I would probably have Ioane there too

They need specialists for 7s these days, even the fitness training is different in that they work towards a lower body fat and higher aerobic fitness.

Exactly - maybe we should poach a few AFL road runners in 2015 to get them ready.

Even if a Wallaby in 2016 had some of the physical attributes of an elite Sevens player, it is a different game. They would have to play a bit in the 2016 Sevens comp and maybe a bit in the 2015 comp to get familiar with the strategy.

Sending a good Wallaby player straight into a Sevens tournament to win an Olympic medal of some colour would be like sending somebody to a sword fight with a plastic knife.

A thought to Oz rugby marketing people: how about a spiel that says to kids: Play Rugby and Win Olympic Gold, or Wear Gold, Win Gold - Play Rugby Union at the Olypmpics

No? As you were then.

we have three wonderful opportunities to keep some very talented youth in the game for longer - I'm thinking Horne, O'Connor et al.

2011 RWC
2013 Lions tour
2016 Olympics!

It won't suit anyone, but will hopefully be a good tool for keeping/getting people in (to?) the game.
