@ Barbarian, or whoever else, what's the best software for editing videos like the one you made?

I used Cyberlink PowerDirector, which I bought for about $70 online. Found it really easy to use, and it produced decent results. It also came with a sound editor which allowed me to chop up the AC/DC song to the one minute parcel.

As for the Super Rugby Ad, whilst I am not crazy about it it's certainly a big step in the right direction. You can see they are trying to keep the tempo up and show the best bits of the game. My main criticism is not the comicbook characters (I think that works pretty well as a premise), but its the choice of highlight for each player. JOC (James O'Connor) running 3m and flopping over for a try, Rocky taking a lineout then loping forward two paces before being held, Cliffy pushing off a tiny Lions player. They are OK highlights to show but you could certainly do better for each I reckon.

could have had greater impact if they put the narration as text and left the narrator out.

except often people dont watch ads, i think it is something like 60 odd percent of people either leave the room or do other things than watch while ads are on, hence why talking is good, it might just make them look back.

how does it work with songs and music rights etc?

Shhhhh.

But seriously you'd think for personal use there'd be some provision. Commercial use is a different question. I say that with zero expertise, just a kangaroo lawyer in the peanut gallery.

Clever. The reason the ARU (or anyone for that matter) couldn't use AC/DC was the cost, which would be enormous. They have got a similar sound without paying anything, even if it lacks the recognition and rock-ness of Thunderstruck.

Thought they could have used better highlights though. There is one scene of Horwill calling a lineout where the fox score-box is visible- it makes the whole thing look a bit scrappy. Could have timed the highlights with the music better as well.

I presume the letter of thanks (and cheque) is in the mail...

If i recall, the Tahs went on to win by quite a margin after that :D

That was almost a decent video, right up until the moment Burgess and Mumm came on, standing there, in their civvies, doing SFA.

Are the Tahs that starved for game footage showing casing their product that they have to resort to footage of things unrelated to the game coming up?

In light of this Reds ad, who else thinks the mungos just do the highlights better? The stuff leading into the origin game tonight was very well done. The clips used were good, the music, commentary and crowd noises all blended cleverly to create genuine excitement. Even the little package they had created at half time was alright.

How hard is it for union to emulate them in this regard? Barbarian's vid makes the Reds one look amateurish to me. That should not be the case. If such a formulaic approach as the league model works, the union teams should be able to emulate it successfully.
