The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) ... has made the decision to cease the Men’s Sevens programme following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.

... This announcement follows the release of the IRFU’s financial results last November, which showed a €18 million deficit for the 2023/24 season.

... As part of its ongoing efforts to manage this deficit and secure a sustainable financial future, the IRFU has been reviewing all of its programmes to identify areas for optimisation and prioritisation.

Not overly surprising given they resisted setting one up for a long time.

Regardless of that, it’s not great when a global rugby powerhouse decides to cease funding a program which is rugby affiliated.
I agree. I was just pointing out that given they came late to the party regardingv7s having resisted the move the IRFU making this move isn't too surprising.

GB should never have been a thing but Argentina losing players to XV's, unless it's temporary, is worrying.
Really doesn't seem much point keeping a Great Britain team if they don't get Olympic funding.....

"GB7s does not receive central Olympic funding, unlike many other unions it is competing with, and we believe the model the series is run under could be more financially effective for individual unions," added O'Shea.

May be they were hoping to use 7s as a spring board to contracts overseas that haven't eventuated. Coupled with the landacape in terms of competitve professional Rugby evolving in Argentina and South America allowing them to explore opportunities domestically.

There's another 7s franchise league in the works. https://www.scmp.com/sport/rugby/ar...-rugby-7s-new-club-based-event-hopes-find-out

Initially based in Europe with some mention of expanding its footprint in future seasons. Planning its first season next spring/Summer up north.

No specifics but the group behind this own Sunderland in the Premier League. According to the limited information it will look to run both mens and womens team with format changes with the gial of running each round over 4 hours once a week as opposed to 2 days.

Players will be required to enter a draft. A lot of similarities to the RPL with some notable differences. The RPL had 15 straight days of games across 2-2.5 hour windows a night. According to the article they've raised an 8 figure amount in seed capital.

Hayden Sargeant retiring from 7s, no word on what’s next. Not the youngest bloke so guess he might be retiring from playing

27 so got potential but he knows his body and interests. Some guys squeeze some MLR out while others make the choice younger to start their second professional life. Came into the 7s late as well so may have thought the chance was gone and the past few years scratched the itch.

On the 7s side. If a Super Rugby side was short on outside backs I'd be going after James Turner. Had a brief stint with the Tahs prior to the 7s but he looks a lot bigger and got that bit of freak finisher in him.

Some big church in the 7s squad, Gonzales is a loss. Is on the wrong side of 30 though I guess

Saw some very dumb comments on Instgram below this post with people just jumping on budget cuts being to blame... Must have missed the posts on the half a dozen or more signings to the program...

7s has always worked like this. Couple fringe guys likely not renewed like Bird and Hickey. Harvey looks likely to shift into XVs sooner than expected. Sargeant retired and Gonzalez has had a great 7s career. Wouldn't surprise me to see him pop up in a role at Sydney Uni with Manenti the new HC there and Gonzalez his long time Eastwood 9 and then 7s player.

Sevens have signed some very good talent. You gotta set yourself up for the next cycle and with three years to the olympics, now is the time. Watters, Morrison, Ekanayake, Charlie etc are very young, and apart from ekanayake most wont see much game time this season. However, they have huge sevens potential, great feet, speed to burn and big engines.
