Really disappointed to lose Jakiya Whitfield to the NRL. I guess they are desperate for players given expansion plans but I think she’s very special.

Expect it to continue to happen unless we can find ways to provide more opportunities for women in Rugby.

Ha. I know it's not the theme of the thread. It's just I actually know a few NRLW players and they're very aware of several current Wallaroos as being prospective targets in the future.

That’s not a surprise at all. There’s been a steady stream of Super W players for years. And why wouldn’t they?

But this one is different. A reasonably established 7s player with a strong future and likely hood to world tours and cash.

Well, she's not going to the Commonwealth games and there's nothing really on the schedule on any substance for the next few months so she may have opted to chase a pay day in the interim. There's no mention of length of contract but from my understanding most of them at the moment a year by year. At least at present. That may change when it expands next year.

Saw a report in the Canberra Times a few weeks ago suggesting some of the current Brumbies Womens players would be sharing their playing time with the Raiders. Not sure how it would work, but would that be an option in other places?

From what those I know involved in the competition as far as they are aware it will only be a single round robin played in the same window as currently. The overlap this year was more of a catch up due to Covid. Meaning that in theory at least players can play both Super W early in the year and NRLW later. Which I'm actually fine with for the most part. In general but specifically in relation to women I don't believe athletes should be confining themselves to just one sport. If there's the opportunity to play in both then they should chase that.

The issue is from a Rugby perspective that with the AFLW going to 18 teams and the NRLW to 10 for now the talent pool is being stretched thinner and thinner in search of quality that if Rugby continues this 'for the love of the game' path for women that money will win out. Because if my niece who's getting into both Rugby and League came to me asking my opinion of whether to sign with the Tahs for $0 or an NRL clubs for say $15k I'm telling her to take the money.

If they can fit it in then good on them. Rather have them still able to play Rugby than be gone for good.

Rugby isn't looking after them like other codes are. Not saying the money is there or what we should do but if you were in the position you'd want to get as much as you can while you can.

And that's just what is on the table at the moment. The NRL seem to have a clear plan in terms of money and growth, even things like equal pay in State of Origin. A women's player can make more money playing one rep game in League than a whole season of rugby.

Funny how people recognise these issues in the women's game but not the men's. Oh, we should just keep 5 pro teams it's all good hey...

As someone who supports the idea of going it alone in a domestic league I'm very aware of the need for more opportunity and money in the game particularly in talent retention.

Yes they're making all the 'active' gear, Speedo are making the swimming gear and R.M. Williams are doing the formal attire.
