Agree. Thought they were fantastic. Surpassed my expectations already. Not sure how that US team stands in terms of turnover but they’ve really challenged us of late.

Dont know if its now a plan or just unfolded the way it did but charlotte looked more like a draw & distributer than the old ffs i'll just do it all myself.

ps would have preferred the indigenous print numbers but the jerseys look so good!

Will get out of jail here. Nice from Meakes + Longbum.

Probably doesn't hurt playing against Canada in a furnace.

Which makes in an impressive comeback. Nice composure. And then the women come out and blow Spain away.

A slow start for the men, which is what we probably expected. So great for them to snag the win.

A really good start to the tournament.

One more game for the men for day 1

holy hell the officiating in this Oz v SAf semi is horrendous. So one sided. Boks not releasing the ball runner basically every tackle. Getting away with murder.

The one that shit me the most was about 10m out from us scoring because we went off our feet - Boks captain basically dived from the side onto the tackled player to prevent him playing the ball right beforehand.

Shocking.

The mens team looked great once they were free of expectation. Dietrich Roache really fired and a lot of those younger players are seriously quick. They way they shredded GB was something to behold.

The loss to South Africa was probably on the cards, not helped by some .... "inconsistent" refereeing.

The womens team looked hungry, ruthless, and clinical. Some of the passing was back to its best, even if a few of the moments against France reminded me of their poorer form.

It will be interesting to see how the balance shifts when NZ return.

Yeah Aussie men looked good in the last two matches they played, scored 35 points in both matches is a pretty strong attacking effort, without Maurice Longbottom as well! But there defence was good also, pretty physical and stifling.

Women looked good all weekend, Sharni Williams looking as fit as ever!
Commentators kept talking about new players but most of them have been in the wider squad for a couple of years now, just finally in the starting team.

Good to see the circuit back up and running.
The NSW's 7's did well, they could probably make the final if they got a couple of players from other States to bolster their squad.

Should be good next weekend with fan, girls could put a decent gap on nz & fair bit of pressure on.

The boys still a bit of work to do but looked better than in Japan

Just on that, WR (World Rugby) came out with the following a bit over a month ago:

"Unique system introduced to mitigate the risk of some teams not being able to participate in all events and to determine Series rankings and decide relegation in 2022 ...

"... <snip>... Noting that Great Britain will compete in the opening two rounds, a points system will be developed that promotes fairness for all competing teams, including those who comprise Great Britain. This will also recognise situations where teams may not be able to participate in any rounds owing to COVID-19." linky

This means winning in Dubai might not be is not as great as it seems. The difficulty is, AFAIK, the details of this "unique system" are yet to be released to us, the great unwashed.

What could it be? - some guesses:
  • Using win percentage instead of table points to order the standings?
  • Allowing teams to drop their two lowest tournament results?
  • + perhaps no relegation for a 3rd season straight?

WR (World Rugby) have clarified how the 2021-22 Series will work:

"With Great Britain only competing in the opening two rounds, a points system has been developed that promotes fairness for all competing teams. This recognises situations where teams may not be able to participate in any rounds owing to COVID-19.

"The system sees the best seven men’s results and four women’s results for each team contribute to their final Series standings.

"Two men’s teams and one women’s will be relegated from the 2022 Series, to ensure a pathway for teams to be promoted from the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challengers Series."

Cheers, Waiopehu Oldboy.

So it's allowing teams to drop their two lowest tournament results.

Have World Rugby worded it a bit dumb, though, by saying "best seven" and "best four"? What happens if Spain gets the winter plague? ... suddenly it is "best five" and "best two".

Hong Kong only canned their event for this series two weeks ago. Who is to say Singapore, et al, won't do the same before April and the rules have to be rephrased again?

Ringinland, Wails & Scorchland men have each been awarded four points for Dubai 1.

Similarly Ringinland women get six points.

Must be part of the whole Team GB deal. I do wonder where it leaves NZ & Samoa in terms of the "best results" though.

Given your earlier link, that's either a mistake or a bit dodgy IMO. Seems sneaky that this wasn't announced.

Old farts looking after the old dart...

It probably won't affect the top of the table (if only best 7 events ,or best 4 events, count) but it might give a team like Wales a free boost to help avoid the two relegation spots.

I'm also wondering now whether Scotland's women might pick up the other half of GBs points ... if they get invited to Spain.
