Didn't realise Slim that Stannard committed a random act of violence. I think it is hard to hold an attack (possibly unprovoked and apparently undefended) against another person to be a lesson about violence for the victim. Certainly, about being in places where violence often occurs at that time of night, but not the other.

Yeah, I wasn’t referring to Stannard.... I don’t know what lesson he needed to learn from this...

Okay, let me spell it out slowly. Stannard is the captain of our Commonweath Games Sevens squad. Or was, poor bugger. The squad is in training camp. I do not know what the official or unofficial rules are that apply in a situation like this, but I would have thought that someone, somewhere, might think that it is not a really great idea to have a night on the piss and end up where they did.

You are welcome to your opinion. I have lived and worked in some dangerous places; I am not suggesting that Coogee at 3 a.m, is an inherently dangerous place, but on the other hand, and I will say it again, it fits the stereotype of a place where drunken yobs are, if not numerous, at least in existence.

Hows is it a witch hunt? We know who the coach is.

My mates wife attended the scene, I won’t say in what capacity, but she said those there were pretty devastated and upset and whilst she couldn’t say whether they had a few drinks or not she did say they weren’t pissed.

I guess my point is, yeah maybe they shouldn’t have been out that late, but what occurred was an unprovoked and completely unexpected attack. They weren’t drunk or rowdy, at worse it was a late night out together. Not exactly setting their training back given they had good Friday off.

Besides what Wamberal said about Coogee, I’ve live in the area for years with my fair share of staying at the CBH or Pav until 3am and I’ve never been in a fight or attacked. You don’t expect that shit happen, and I think it’s completely unfair to blame what’s occurred on Friend.

No one is blaming friend.
There have been a few one punch heroes late at night in Coogee in the last 5 years, IIRC, but that’s not the point either.
The point is that it’s an odd preparation for commonwealth games: whether they had the next day off or not their bodies should have been at maximum training load with days off to rest, which is the most important part of a serious trainng regime if you want to avoid illness and injury to the greatest extent possible.
I am still surprised that they were there.

I'm certainly not blaming Friend for Stannard being attacked.
I am critical that he was kicking on with a group of players till 3am.
A coach just shouldn't be part of that culture, especially in the middle of the season.

It was Friend’s official farewell celebration before the squad split off into two for Hong Kong and the Comm Games..........

The Kiwi team were also in attendance.

Official farewell celebration, months before his departure?
For players and families, and a visiting National team.
Thats pretty fucking ridiculous.
I think you would find that function would have taken place regardless of Friends contractual status.

And if Friend wants to get on it with his players to farewell him, then wait till after his commitments are concluded.
No successful coaches interact with their players like this during the season.

It was a surprise celebration for Friend.

He was ‘lured’ there on the basis it was a catch up with the kiwis. I don’t think they were actually there.

Pretty sure they were there, but that's irrelevant.
As is my repeated claim that successful coaches don't get on the drink till 3am with their players mid season.
Cos,successful coaches don't get farewell functions mid season.....

Every day of the year?

blimey.
you said they weren't playing for 2 weeks.
that is not the only physical activity they would be doing, one might think.
They would train.
And my bet is that they would be training very hard right now and tapering towards the tournament. so the 8 hours when they could have been asleep but were sinking piss, eating kebabs and getting punched were lost rest in what should be a peak training (and therefore rest) period.
