I like watching it at the Olympics and I liked going to the event when it was in Sydney (SFS, Allianz) but other than that do people really give a shit about 7s?

People give a shit about their nation but when you hear about the recent tournament it goes into my brain and just as quickly deleted. Don't really know what you do with it either to make it anything more than what it is.

Crowds have been on the decline for a while and competitive tension for events plummeted. Might not be fashionable thing to say but combining the women’s into the men’s event hasn’t been great and the standards haven’t improved much with some core teams skill levels too poor for a serious tv product.

Have been saying for a while but rugby not as healthy as many think across the world, although I do think it’s stabilized a little the last 12-24 months.

Go back to women’s and men’s events separate. 16 men’s teams with 4 groups instead of the lucky loser system. Remove some ridiculous penalty decisions for seatbelt tackles and stop sending every minimal contact to the bin. Although think it might be cooked too much to return to where it was.

Perhaps getting to a stage with some qualifier tournaments in lead up to a World Cup and Olympics with the best and known rugby players in the world might be where the future sits.

Getting the 15s players involved to me is the only way it gains anything but how do we really fit that in besides the Olympics? Clubs will not want to risk injury to any stars to what is a gimmick sport as much as I enjoy it.

Interested to see how he translates against men.

He's skilled, not large but fast as fuuuuck. Cant teach that one. He's on pure stats faster than Toole. I know he's on a contract that sees him part of the Tahs as well after the season right? With their recent aditions of Lancaster, Kellaway not in the plans when Tonga was signed I wonder what the go is. No harm in letting him develop in time. Aus U20s might get him??

NZ men lost to Uruguay & the only silver lining I can find is that so did Fiji. Which probably means we lose badly to Fiji & wind up playing for 5th-9th again :(

Let's hope we can keep him in Oz rugby, one way or another.

The Aussie men seem to be rotating their starters a bit and getting pay from it. Then bench players are having impact each time. Tough ask against SA but they gave them a good run in the pool games so they are a chance at least.

For the women I’ve been really impressed with how strongly Demi Hayes has come back from injury. If anything she’s playing even better than I remember her playing previously. Tia Hinds stepping up as well - although Maddie Ashby remains a big loss. The youngsters on the bench doing a pretty good job - although it must be said that the starters have blown each opposition team away so far so the bench players haven’t been under pressure.

Aus Women are untouchable. Not enough superlatives in the world for M. Levi. Watching her play against the Japanese was particularly unfair.

Aus men stumble into the semi finals, reserving the best game so far for against France in the quarters. They annoy me for not committing the tackler, their ability to open up space seems to be lacking.

Just be careful there. I wrote a post about 12 months ago where I said the Aussie & Kiwi women were in a league of their own and, aside from the odd upset, they’d rarely get beaten.

Whilst I think they remain a clear no 1 & 2 in the world, I think the last 12 months has demonstrated that the margins in 7s are thin (as well as the importance of a specific game plan).

The men’s comp at the moment seems something of a lottery. But very much enjoying seeing the Spanish team as suddenly something of a power house. Not sure how long it will last, but hopefully a long time.

What an utter rubbish decision to go for goal out wide on the 22m after the bell. Possession in a good agttacking zone would have been the right way to go.
