Sure, but should the Reds 3rd choice flyhalf in their squad be a 28 year old from club rugby that is as good as he'll ever be or should they maybe work on developing a younger guy who might be a Wallaby one day?

Yes he should Braveheart. Hes probably a guy like Matt Brandon who has paid his dues, and as a #10 knows how to win a rugby match. He,s also probably a guy who was passed over at 19 because he went to a State School and has had to work hard for the last 7 years and still plays cos he just fucken loves it.

As for developing a younger guy who might be a wallaby one day, not sure if you do that by chucking him in against Barret and the Canes. Theres plenty of time. How about a couple of years in Colts and grades, a year or two in 1s and NRC and a year in an English Div 1 club. Then we'll have a player!

What happens in a couple of years time when all your contracted fly halves are on the wrong side of 30 and every half decent option has been signed elsewhere?

Super Rugby sides are limited to roughly 40 contracted positions and within that they have to compete in the current season as well as plan for the future. If they don't sign talented young players, other sides will. They won't just sit in club rugby waiting until the Reds coming knocking if there are other options available.

The teams also want to be able to help control the development of the player and that is another reason for signing them when young.

At the end of the day if they get really desperate due to injuryies they can offer the 28 year old from club rugby a short term contract to fill a gap.

There's a reason why very few players on the extremities of squads are old players because they don't improve the team in the long term. A smaller sacrifice in the current year (by having a young guy who won't be as good this season but probably won't be required to play) is offset by the benefits it provides long term.

Clearly some of the young guys signed never make it. Plenty do though. Teams aren't always the best at predicting that.

Now USA rugger that is a little churlish and you are being a bit of a knob actually as this is a forum where one has a right to comment.

The point being we have had quite a few games now and the Reds to be frank seem to be going backwards at a rate of knots....and now losing Cooper and Slipper on top....and frankly I am surprised as they have a quality roster but the old saying a team of stars does not make a star team.

So what's the problem....

Coaching...noting new coach....and first senior coaching gig at this level.

New combinations......still waiting to gel

Or something else...

Hunt looks ok....which is positive to see him play the most consistent quality since he joined the Reds...bit hard to find other positives personally....

Anyhow over to you USA rugger and your pictures of brick walls (fantastic contribution)

Rotation is best in Super Rugby I believe, up to a point of course. If a player does not cut it he does not cut it, but for the most part players given equal opportunity and being under similar guidance will achieve similar levels of success.

It is only this season with the rotation policy implemented (unofficially) in SA that I have started to notice this. The Sharks won with a weakened team against the Kings - barely, but it will be experience in good stead down the line for them. Last year the Stormers drew against the Sunwolves, this year they sent a depleted and young team over there and won a hard fought battle (a lot of the Stormers' rotation is due to injuries of course).

Sort of mid-season another competition kicks off in SA - the SuperSport challenge, which includes 15 sides including 1 from Namibia, which offers those on the fringes of Super Rugby squads the opportunity to get game time should they be needed.

Robert du Preez for the stormers has 8 or 9 caps for the Stormers but is currently more experienced than his 12 and 13 and for now they are still winning the games they are expected to win.

This sort of mindset has been enforced also by the continuous outflow of players to Europe and Japan, I reckon SA suffers the greatest loss of players here.

Don't play Quade every week is my viewpoint for example. If you're playing a team you expect to beat, put a youngster in there. If you don't beat them your squad will have built character. If you do, you will have built character, depth and confidence.
