You’re absolutely right - just another fraudulently concocted explanation from an Excuses Factory alliance conveniently joining up the hapless Foxtel commentators and the lost in time and space QRU. An alliance of soft minds and incompetent thought.
As I pointed out elsewhere (with RugbyReg’s help), the average age of this 2018 Reds squad is very similar to that of 2011’s.

The results, reckless inconsistency and general ordinariness point to Thorn being, best case, promoted too early, or, worse case, permanently unsuited to pro level rugby coaching.
The extraordinary QRU decision to back up him with entirely the wrong type of ACs make the truth of Thorn at this level somewhat hard to decipher.

I agree Let Brad Thorn bring in his own coaching staff in 2019..If we have the money for it considering we have Quade Cooper, Karmichael Hunt & Nick Stiles still burning a hole in our 2018 budget with unpaid money but no production.
Gotta remember the decision to go from Nick Stiles to Brad Thorn as Head Coach happened very later in 2017 (October 5th). Stiles was on the trajectory to return to coach in 2018 and Thorn and Carozza were heading towards NRC championship. Tony McGahan was bought in because he had synergy with Stiles.
I'm sure in 2019 if you let Brad Thorn bring in his own assistants. the results will be better then this. Give McGahan his marching papers and send Carozza back to our u20's system.

Lets face some fact with oz rugby in the toilet as rookie Super Rugby coach Thorne may not be the full deal at this point but best coach Reds had for a long time and especially in terms of rookie coach with offering great potential for improvement. And opportunity to improve especially there when considering the youth that has been blooded this season by Thorne...
There are a few oz Super Rugby coaches with couple of Super Rugby seasons under their belt who would be sweating on their future this season but I would seriously doubt Thorne as rookie first year coach would be one to be too worried.

Unless BT goes, then presumably QC (Quade Cooper) would be paid production but BT burning a hole (he’s on a multi year deal no?)

Worst loss I have seen by the Reds, maybe not on a score basis but on being demolished by a weak opposition.
I am getting frustrated by the lack of skills required to play the game at a high level (and also schoolboys).
I think instead of punishing the player with hard gym workouts and trying to be harder than the next guy...or coach maybe some back to basics drills all day until it is done properly.
I would have every 9,10,12 and 15 in the team go to an oval with a bit piece of plyboard with a hole cut out that is chest high and about twice the size of the ball. I would tell them to stay at the ground until they can hit the hole 20 times in a row. Old school skills development through repetition. Then do it to the other side. If you really want gym work then use bricks like the Ellas did.
I would then work on how to pass a ball without having to double pump the ball every time. We need quick AND accurate ball.
There are a lot of issues and I would almost go as far as to not use the gym at all, lifting weights will not win a game with our lack in skills.
Where is Mick Byrnes? Is he still employed? I thought he was based in Brisbane?

Brad has one of the most impressive rugby resume you've seen.
There's obviously going to be growing pains with a Rookie head coach. It would be wrong to cut bait with BT in search of a new coach after you've fired the last 2 guys with money left on their contract.
If your committed to Thorn in 2019 doesn't it make sense he gets to bring in his own guys (even from abroad)?

I thought that Thorn brought Carozza on as opposed to having him foisted on him by the QRU. McGahan was a Stiles era appointment (not sure if it was a Stiles choice) but you'd think that if you were given the gig you could turn around and say I don't want that guy as my defence/assistant coach I can do it myself if you didn't rate him.

Depends on his mandate - if he promised competitiveness this year he’s in trouble.
If he promised a rebuild that might take 5 years to reach competitiveness than that’s a different story, but he’ll the last man standing in oz rugby if that’s the timeline.

A rugby CV is in itself NOT a rugby pro level coaching CV and even McGahan's CV is more thorough than Brads. It was an unmitigated error bringing Brad in to lead in 2018 as were his start up decisions. Right now he in no way deserves to be entitled to dictate who joins the coaching crew. it requires others up the food chain to work this through as Brad has shown little to be trusted.
BTW that is not to say that he should be chopped. It's a shit stick, but it's what we have for now. But controls need to be in place and he needs to be under instruction for a while.
These same players in a NZ franchise would currently be smoking the house down.
