I still am in serious doubt as to how a full-time 'coaching director' and full-time 'head coach' ever works or can have useful value-add meaning within the one franchise...why two people sitting at those levels, the crucial roles for value-add are all the specialist coaches, S&C under a proper boss as head coach etc...

Have a look at how successful head coach and coaching director worked at Collingwood in the AFL. Didn't happen, Mick Malthouse said stuff it and went to the media and now he and Eddie McGuire (club President) are having a go at each other in the media. McKenzie has got to have been given the nod for the Wallabies job surely.

Or he's protecting his reputation from the ups and downs of professional rugby. One bad season with lots of injuries and he'd be bottom of the Wallaby pile. This way, he steps back from the week to week results, let's RG take all the flak if the wins dry up, and glides into the Wallabies job off the back of the 2011 results.
Getting flogged by 60 points the other week might have crystallized all this for him.

Wow, stunned and kinda excited. So far my only positive comments about RG was his commitment to the Force seemed genuine, now I see that was all false... see ya later RG.
I can't help think Vern Reid watched his ham fisted attempts at recruiting through the off season and when he heard RG was on the move probably offered to help him pack.
And finally the Force are now in the market place at pretty much the best time ever to find a decent coach.
It's just the soft sidewards shuffle in preparation to free him up to take the Wallaby gig while trying to retain him in the Red's hierachy at the same time. Link doesn't look like he is sick of coaching at all, he looks like the kind of guy who is just warming up.

Perhaps RG saw the writing on the wall (the sack) given the Force's admirable, but lackluster performances so far this year and jumped ship while he could. Maybe?
Anyway, the way I see it is succession planning from both parties - Wallabies and Reds. O'Neill has already decided McKenzie is the man post 2013, and wants to get his feet in the door next year and show him the ropes under Robbie. The Reds then, KNOW they will be without McKenzie by post 2013, and therefore don't want to waste time thinking about the future. Whether any of this is a good idea is yet to seen. Where this leaves the Force, I have no fucking clue.
Of course, this could all be accelerated if Robbie Deans has a dreadful dreadful season with the Wallabies (and going by the Super Rugby form so far this is possible), and O'Neill gives him the sack anyway knowing McKenzie is already on board. Eh!
