State preciousness prevails - but only in jest this time.

I'm for Moore to start based on the grinding down theory, but it may be academic because TPN will be short of a gallop anyway. Like many props who are yanked before oranges, I would rest Moore at 30 minutes and give TPN two bites of the cherry. Then at the 60 minute mark I would make a decision when to pull him off for Moore to have another go. TPN can't be substituted for tactical reasons so he has to be categorised as a permanent injury replacement- so a nice bit of cramp should be suffered by TPN.

The problem would be if Moore then gets injured, TPN, who has been permanently replaced, couldn't come back on, even for a blood bin. That would mean uncontested scrums which is a bummer, but it would mean also that a non-hooker would have to throw to the lineout.

Are there any referees around who can say if what I have written is right or wrong - I'm not sure. Please quote the law when doing so.
.

Sorry, but I hope we never go down the track of trying to exploit the front rower substitution rule like this. The rule is there to ensure we have the best chance to have live scrums all game. Different if there is a genuine injury but Lee, your comment seems to imply that we base our strategy around TPN not going the distance and getting a free 'interchange'.

I see that as being not far remove from sending guys out with blood satchels to fake a blood injury.

I don't mind who starts. IMO who is best is splitting hairs. But I do think it is wrong to say TPNs impact wouldn't be as effective at the start of a game. I remember watching him start a test (SA in 2009 I think) where he knocked up belting people in the first half. I just hope the are both available because I think there is a clear gap between them and Fainga'a (unfortunately).

One wonders if Oz will name their 30 and then have standbys as part of the training squad though not named as such.

Then when a named player can't make it by RWC time he will drop out and get replaced by somebody who has trained with the team.

The no.8 stocks are running a bit low. The valid candidates left are probably: Samo, Mowen and Vaea - add in Dennis there, come to think of it, because he took over as 8 for the Tahs late in the season when Mowen was hurt and did OK. Since Dennis and Samo were named in the 40, they would probably be the first choices though the other 2 are specialist 8s.

We all remember what happened in 1995 taking injured players to the RWC. John Eales said the dressing room looked like a hospital ward - and that was before the games. The injury situation was talked about before the team left but then we didn't have the alternatives we have now.

The danger is that a crock may take up valuable game time early in the pool games, then the penny drops that it was a mistake not to leave him at home. A replacement would have to come in and not be match fit.

There is a case for saying that they shouldn't name anybody in the team who hasn't proved his fitness by the deadline date (before the last game of 3N) rather than taking a crock to the RWC.

It's done in many Super games TSR and all teams do it.

Try to remember when props are taken off the field before oranges, or just after, for tactical reasons (i.e. are not injured). Invariably they go back on with 15 minutes to go or something like that so they rotate their 3 props in the game. Al Baxter, who started in Tahs' games over the years, used to cramp up all the time (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) in the 2nd half so the first prop could come back on to avoid the uncontested scrum situation. It's been going on for years.

Doesn't happen so much when your reserve prop is not that great and it doesn't happen so much with hookers, since the starter is usually superior to the reserve and you want him on for most of the game, but I've seen it.

All eyes on Baa Baas' last-chance Wallabies

July 29, 2011

USUALLY an Australian Barbarians match against Canada would not grab the attention of the international rugby world. But the fixture on the Gold Coast on August 26 has suddenly assumed high priority as it will determine whether a string of fringe Wallabies become World Cup squad members.

The Wallabies' team managers believe the match, to be held on the eve of the Bledisloe Cup match in Brisbane, will mark the return of several injured key players, including winger Drew Mitchell and No.8 Wycliff Palu.

Although the 30-man World Cup squad is to be announced a week earlier, the Barbarians fixture will allow Test selectors to check whether numerous candidates are ready for the World Cup, or if late replacements will be required.

It is understood that the eight members of the World Cup squad who will not take part in the Bledisloe Cup fixture the following day will instead play for the Barbarians.

Although Palu this week opted to have arthrosocopic surgery to remove floating cartilage in his knee, the Wallabies still believe the Waratahs back-rower will be available for the World Cup.

They also hold hope that backup halfback Luke Burgess and prop Salesi Ma'afu will be available for the return Test against the Springboks in Durban on August 13.

The Wallabies, now in a training camp in the Gold Coast, will take 24 players to Auckland next week for the Bledisloe Cup game, and expand the squad to 26 for the South African leg the following week. A large contingent, including Dan Vickerman, Dean Mumm and Dave Dennis, will return to Sydney this weekend to play club football.

So is vickerman now 4th in line for the throne after kev, sharpie and simmons, or are we banking on super sub dean mumm...

I'd actually like to see Samo get a crack at a second row spot as he has played quite a bit of rugby there over the years, and this would free up a squad spot for a third hooker.

Nothing suggests he is the 4th in line. He was injured for the Springboks match and Deans probably wants him to play 80 mins for Uni.

Remember it was Sharpe that was taken off against Samoa for him and Sharpe that was shunted to the bench for the Springboks.

If Vickerman can demonstrate fitness and form, he is the perfect back up for Horwill as the tight lock.

Look at the All Blacks & Tana Umaga in 2003 that really comeback to bite them.

The sooner they get Palu back the better, as the big guy needs time to play himself into form and fitness. He needs a few games before the World Cup starts.

I fear it may be too late for Cliffy. In the games he has actually made it out on the paddock this year, he's looked well off the pace for mine. I can foresee him not starting for the Wallabies again, as I don't think his body will carry him the distance. I hope I'm absolutely wrong though.

Nice!

It'd be a great way to put both Taf and Moore on the field at the same time. Of course it will never happen, but it's a fun thought!

Just thinking, if Mitchell makes a full recovery and is selected for the WC, would Deans find a spot for him in the starting 15?

Perhaps Deans does not think Samo can, at his age etc... play the whole Tri Nations and WC campaign after a pretty hard Super 15 season.

What I mean is, lets assume Palu doesn't come good in time, perhaps Deans is resting Samo from the Tri Nations, working on his fitness etc in camp and preparing him for the WC 8 role. Perhaps McCalman is just holding down the job at the moment until either Palu returns or Deans plumps for Samo in the World cup. Just a thought?
