You can't compare the workrate of players and refs. It's like comparing the workrate of rugby players and cyclists. Obviously cyclists are much fitter and can hold a sustained pace for longer, but they would tire out pretty quickly trying to play a contact sport. Whereas the rugby players wouldn't last very long in a cycling race.
The ref needs to hold a sustained pace for the whole game, while not getting tired. Keeping their heart rate down ect..
Players need to concentrate all their effort into short bursts, and get plenty of time to walk around the field.
Quite simply, if a player wants to become a ref. They need to change their whole training regime. Being able to keep up with a rugby game doesn't count for too much.
