Refereeing decisions

The Wallabies were robbed

Yeah WR (World Rugby) (World Rugby), this ain't it.
That’s as much direct criticism of a ref I’ve ever heard on that web show. I don’t think Owen’s was very impressed by the standard.

It’s veiled in the joke about us being robbed and the title of the YouTube clip was something like ‘Will the wallabies ever catch a break?’

The standard we’ve had to put up with lately has been dour but I don’t want to be associated with fans who whinge constantly. The bigger picture is we need to take the ref out of games. The best teams get some benefit of the doubt occasionally because they’ve been good for a long time and there’s some degree of confirmation bias in all humans.

It's curious that WR (World Rugby) (ok it might not be the actual body, but it's on their letterhead) come out in defence of the refs when it suits them (ie Aus v Lions or any other NH team) and chooses to throw them under the bus against SA or NZ.

Not that I want to cast aspersions... it just looks suss. They talked about some of the contentious calls v Lions, and honestly they are more 50/50 than the most recent one. So I'll walk this one back

I don't like Doleman as a ref, but....

This may not be a popular opinion, but I don't think that's anywhere near as clear cut a penalty/YC and Nige makes out - especially from the refs perspective (who has actually done a pretty amazing job to keep up with Toole here)

I think the ref sees a release here (we can't see his other arm, but neither can the ref). Now I agree any number of laws are broken around release of the tackled player etc, as well as the actions of 22, but refs don't penalise those on plenty of other tackle situations either.

Toole does get a pass away, and he doesn't penalise Australia for holding on etc, it's just play on (ball is subsequently knocked on by a clearing out player)

To me it’s pretty cynical from 22 regardless of the result and I think it’s pretty murky as to whether that’s a release from 15. Offside gets pinged even when play carries on as normal so why shouldn’t that? It looked extremely ugly which should have been a clue to Doleman.

It’s interesting that WR (World Rugby) would allow content like that out there on their own pages when they shut down other discussion. It’s almost like they want to throw us a bone on a more innocuous incident. Maybe I’m a conspiracist.

It's only contentious because we lost, there's a similar incident of Skelton rolling around getting in their way which wasn't penalised and if they were down a try I'm sure we could argue about that.

Not WR (World Rugby), it's just Owen's podcast isn't it? He doesn't have anything at all to do with WR (World Rugby) these days does he?

It’s WR (World Rugby)’s show. Owen’s is presumably getting coin from them to do it and it’s on their page.

It is quite specifically a World Rugby run show that he does, and has been posted to all their channels:

I'll give Doleman some slack because he had to keep up with the play. And hard for him to see the actions of 22 because he would have been focusing on where the ball was but pretty obvious penalty for no 'CLEAR' release. I don't reckon that was necessarily a yellow worthy because it seemed desperate not cynical, but they talk about denying opportunity to score and what not. But easily a YC for 22 as that was deliberate and cynical play.
