In the Reds Team announcement Media Release, O'Connors omission was explained thus:

O’Connor has a leg injury and has been unable to train this week so makes way for Ben Tapuai at fullback.
“James (O’Connor) is a victim of his own previous injury and of the situation we have found ourselves in with the number of backline injuries. He was always skinny on the amount of work he’d done and then found himself playing 80 minutes back to back. He suffered a nasty cork early in the Waratahs game which finished as a small strain by the end. It’s not ideal but we have been chasing a bit in the backs due to the lack of numbers and continuity.

I've never held a high opinion of him since he withdrew himself with muscle soreness, from 'that' Aus v Samoa game just after it was announced that he would be marking Alesana Tuilangi. So I could be seeing things that aren't there, but I just get the feeling that this could be O'Connor managing his brand to an extent.

Regardless, this could be the most disjointed backs performance we will see all year. A week ago, I thought we had seen the worst!

Team looks so many miles below the Brumbies one.

One thing I will say is that Benny Taps has played a little bit of flyhalf and Pickle has played a bit more at fullback.

Yeah I was thinking the same Reg. I assume the only reason they've gone with Frisby at 10, Taps at 15 is to keep the consistency in the halves for what its' worth.

What's that definition of madness? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results

I wouldn't advocate chucking a Prem player at 10 in Super Rugby without some good prep but I reckon there'd have to be a few options at 11, 14 or 15 getting around in the Prems that would be better than having Taps there.

Pity Turner couldn't get up, I thought he was good in his game at 15.

That's a very long and unfair bow to draw IMO.

Questioning his toughness is seriously rough. Only have to look at him dragging himself off the ground with a broken sternum to try and stop Rene Ranger coming at him like a train. If he hasn't been able to put in a proper pre-season and has now strained a calf it would just be stupid to play this week. A strain turns into a tear and suddenly he's out for a month. It's a no win situation.

Agreed - I've never seen him shirk the tough stuff and even back in the three amigo days he was always fronting up in defence. I have good memories of him dropping Spies close to the line in a test, as well as that great dump tackle on Victor Matfield. Just examples of where he hasn't just done it, but relished it.

I also don't see how one can question his toughness with that quoted paragraph as evidence. It says right there that he received a "nasty cork" early on in the game yet played out the 80 minutes which resulted in the strain. Plenty of players leave the field for bad corks, though the tough ones will stay on if their team needs them.

I thought I acknowledged that I may have been drawing a longish bow, but if I didn't make myself clear then yes I understand that's what I was doing. But I never questioned his toughness at all. I was wondering if he was managing his image by not playing in games or positions that will potentially make him look a bit silly.

So if anyone knows of any corporate tickets involving vast quantities of free booze going free on Saturday night, feel free to give them my number.

Was planning to have a dry night but after reviewing the Reds team, I've reviewed my no boozing policy.

If you need to prefix a statement with "I may be drawing a long bow" it might be an indication that the comment is better left not said.

I watched JOC (James O'Connor) go through the warmup before the Force game and then his body language when he was told he wasn't going to play, he was filthy... I think that says more about him then speculation that he withdrew from a Wallaby test because he didn't want to mark the opposition player.

JOC (James O'Connor) is a dick on many levels, but I don't think you can question the blokes willingness to mark up against the opposition, he debut'd in super rugby barely weighing in at 80kgs.

He also may not want to make his team look silly by playing in a position he knows he isn't particularly good at (didn't he get quoted earlier this season saying he didn't want to play 10?) or when his body isn't allowing him to perform. That might be my own long bow to draw but maybe he's actually matured a little.

The Samoa test was also literally years ago and I don't remember there ever being anything but rumors about O'Connor's withdrawal - for all we know it could have been a decision from the top to take no chances with one of our most important backs at the time right before going into the 2011 RWC.

Yep, both fair points. I'll cop that. I wasn't trying to be dickish about it, I'm genuinely down about our team at the moment and probably let that cloud my thinking; O'Connor makes an easy scapegoat.
I appreciate your insight into what's been happening at training (EDIT: pregame) TOCC, cheers for that. I feel much better about it!

For the socially irresponsible Brumbies supporters.........and socially corrupted sadistic but brave Reds supporters....

Looking for somewhere to watch the Aquis Brumbies play the Reds on Saturday 14 March? Why not join our team at the official screening?
WHERE: Galaxy nightclub upstairs at Casino Canberra.
WHEN: Saturday 14 March, from 7pm (kick off 7.40pm)
WHAT: There will be a big screen for watching the game. Casino Canberra will be offering special drinks prices for the event: Brumbies non-travelling players will be there and we would love to have as many fans as possible to join them.

"Heinz" Magnay is picking up a fair few Super Rugby caps for such a young bloke but I hope he's sorted out how to defend on the wing over the last couple of weeks or he'll get carved up bigtime on Saturday night.
