Brumbies want to target the Reds scrum & lineout - no surprises there - but how will their own pack look this weekend. I don't think they'll present anything like the challenge the Crusaders did. Hopefully they won't outscore us 4 tries to 1 this time around either...

Brumbies face massive challenge May 30, 2011 - 7:39PM

Ex-Queensland hooker Stephen Moore says the Reds' set piece could be an area for the Brumbies to exploit when the seemingly mismatched Super Rugby sides line-up in Brisbane on Saturday.

The Reds top the ladder and are going from strength to strength following a 17-16 win against the seven-time champion Crusaders on Sunday.

In contrast, the Brumbies sit third last with two wins from 13 games, one point from the bottom, in a year the twice champions would like to forget.

But Moore, who spent 2003-08 at the Reds, saw some opportunities amidst the gloom.

"Aside from the set piece, they really played well out of it," Moore said of the Reds' pack against the Crusaders.

While scoring two tries to one, the Reds spent much off the final 15 minutes defending in their own quarter, the Crusaders pushing the home side's scrum around and poaching a number of line out throws throughout the match.

"They got out of a few situations there really well, which is something they have done well all year.

"That's an area we thought we improved on last week, our set piece, and hopefully we can do that again on Saturday," Moore said.

The Brumbies have won their past five matches in Brisbane, but lost to the Reds for the first time in Canberra in March.

Moore said a recent spray from coach Tony Rea has lifted the workrate and intensity of the side,

Rea said his men lacked fight following a home loss to then bottom-placed Lions three rounds ago.

"I thought the last two weeks, in particular, the group has been a lot tougher," Moore said.

"And we have fought a lot harder to stay in the games.

"If we can do that again, we are a very good chance."

Fullback Pat McCabe said the blast has had an affect but their inability to score from opportunities kept hampering their chances.

"For a few weeks, he (Rea) has not been able to question our effort or our intensity," McCabe said.

"It is just that execution which we are still lacking."

After watching the brumbies play this year, fair to say they cannot score a try. THey are pathetic in attack. So even if Queensland can't score many of their own, I just cannot see ACT getting points from tries.

Interesting to note that the Force are the only side in the competition not to get the Try Bonus Point. Brumbies have got it twice.

Interesting maybe but not surprising at all. Blame the coach whose apparently a backs skills coach!

So the papers are saying that Link is not considering Gill as the starting 7. for this weekend. Fair enough too, he will be fairly jet lagged. Begs the question, who then? Most likely candidate is Jake Schatz, but it's not his natural position. With Tomiki out injured, and Luafutu not available (according to Reg), who else might it be? Racking my brains to think who in the Academy might step up, and the only forwards I can think of from the Academy are McDuling, Butler and Coridas. Mitch Wade the Uni loosie might be a very left field call.

I think that they will go with Shatz and hope he can play 80 or use AWH and Higgers as left and right flankers late in the game as they did on Sunday. Butler could be an option but think Link may just play a heap of locks.

Mitch Wade isn't a chance as he is now playing hooker, has put on a bit of size too.

Wrong, Coridas...

Media Release: Ben Coridas to make Super Rugby and St.George Reds debut

Head coach Ewen McKenzie has made one change for Saturday night’s clash against the Brumbies at Suncorp Stadium with QAS Reds Academy flanker Ben Coridas to make his St.George Reds and Super Rugby debut.

Coridas, 23, joined the Reds Academy in 2011 with quite an impressive resume that included being part of the NSW Waratahs setup and in the Australian Under 20s.

McKenzie said Coridas, who comes in as a straight swap for injured openside flanker Beau Robinson, has been given the opportunity based on his efforts in the Academy and in a number of strong performances for GPS in the Strategic Airlines Queensland Premier Rugby competition.

“We considered our options for replacing Beau but we recognised from our first couple of games this year that the breakdown is king,” Head Coach Ewen McKenzie said.

“It’s imperative you have a physical presence at the breakdown in attack and defence and Ben Coridas is a specialist who is very good at the confrontational part of the game, something which will be handy against the Brumbies.

“Liam Gill was considered but he only gets back to Brisbane on Thursday morning following some intense travel and the bulk of our preparations will already have been done by then.

“Liam will come back into contention next week refreshed and ready to go.”

The St.George Reds will be throwing their support behind the MND and Me Foundation when they play the Brumbies by wearing and then auctioning off specially designed jerseys to be worn during the match.

The MND and Me logo will feature prominently on the front of the jersey as a way of increasing awareness for the devastating affects resulting from Motor Neuron Disease, a progressive neurological disease that affects approximately 1400 people in Australia.

Bidding for the jerseys commence at 2:30pm on Wednesday, June 1 with each Reds player to sign the respective jersey they wear against the Brumbies. To bid SMS the Jersey Number you want to bid for and the amount of your bid to +61 448 782 119 before 12:00pm on Friday, June 10. For example to bid $200 for Jersey 10 please type ‘10 200’.

Not lately, but he's definitely a fetcher, so that should balance the Reds backrow. Bit of a cattledog, as Lee Grant would put it.

Jeez that is one that no-one saw coming. Brumbies are without Fainga'a and Hooper so the breakdown battle won't be as bad as it could have been for the Reds.

We should win but you never no with he come-down after such a big game. One mollifying factor could be that the Brumbies have given it to us for soooo long that these Reds will be keen to inflict some long term pain themselves.
